Which is better?
Long story, or several short stories with the same characters?
I already have a start of over 3k words, but would like to do more with these characters.

What is the limit on length? Is it 10k?

The limit is 10k, yes.

I don't think one way is "better" than the other. If you can tell the whole story in 10,000 words, I think you should do that. If you have three distinct 3,000 word stories that involve the same characters then you should submit them separately.

If it's a larger story arc then ensure the breaks are natural. Also, be aware that, unless your opening chapter is truly outstanding, your readership will tail off with every successive chapter. Make each part captivating and make your reader want more.

For longer stories that are successful, see any of Dancing_Doll's work. She writes 8-10k stories which are inevitably popular.

For a series of distinct stories with recurring characters, see the Robert and Julianna series written jointly by Alphamagus and Principessa (found on Principessa's page).

For a long story in chapters, see Jaymal's Nailing Neely Jordan saga in ten parts - truly fantastic.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Clum. In fact, I wouldn't have said it better. First-rate response.

Welcome to Lushland, Katarina.

Clum's answer was excellent, but I thought I'd jump in too.

I've got one piece (prologue and chapter 1 are posted on my page) that is episodic. More chapters are on the way, and it involves two (and in later installments more) people engaged in a rather lengthy sexual encounter whilst telling each other stories about their sex-lives in times past, so there is a long continuing story, and a shorter story hidden within each one.

I have another project which is quite lengthy, I think about 17,000 words now (not posted) that I'm not remotely sure how I would break down. If you have a really long story, my advice is to leave something to wonder about at the end of each chapter, because going back over mine, I can't find a single damn spot to break it down to a postable length. With that said, let me recognize Clum's answer as excellently concise and well presented again before I sign off.
Thank you guys! That answered my question for now I think. smile

I am at 5k words so far.
It has a long intro, so I am making sure the pay off is as good as possible.

I will check out other people's stories for ideas too.
Thanks for the resources, suggestions and welcome.
