Hiya Sean,

The minimum character count for stories is 3000, which translates to about 600 words. The flash erotica section has no minimum, but a maximum of 1000 words.

many thanx,

the new competition is 7000 words? that's a hell of a lot, its more like a novel then a story.

That's nowhere near a novel. A novella should have at least 40,000 words.

7,000 is nothing. If anyone has trouble writing 7,000 words, then give something else a try; I hear flying fishing is a good hobby.

No worries.

Quite often, comps are limited to 3000 or 5000 words. This is one for slightly meatier works. It will no doubt be different next time, just to mix things up a bit.

your a bit sarcastic aren't you? i didnt say i have trouble with it, just a lot of words for a site. i like writing and some of my stories may be shorter then most but i have never written 7000 word or more without having to do plot lines that get complicated,

I wasn't being sarcastic. It's just that I bang through about 5,000 words in an afternoon. It's usually only a rough draft, but it shouldn't be a problem for an author. Novellas should contain around 40,000 words. So a novel should be well in excess of that.

I was just pointing out that 7,000 words does not constitute a novel.
fair enough, but for someone like me who works early morning shift with a small break then evening shift, i only get the chance to write about 100 words a day.

and for something like 7000 words i want to make sure i do a proper job, and for what i have planned, i need to do some research too.

Yes, please do a proper job. I don't know about the need for research (but hey, have at it if you like), but definitely some kind of plot and character development would be great. These elements are lacking from far too many stories on this site, in my opinion:

B: Hi. My name's Billy. I'm 18, and I'm a walking hard-on that women can't resist.
K: Hi Billy. I'm Karen. I'm 21, 5'4" and I have 36 DDD breasts, a killer ass, long legs, and luscious blonde hair. I'm not going to tell you anything else about myself.
B: I'm going to fuck you now with my 48 inch cock, even though I don't know you at all.
K: Yes, please! I'm always desperate to have sex with random strangers I've just met for no reason at all.
[They have wild gymnastic sex, where K is penetrated in every orifice from every conceivable position, and both have about 100 screaming explosive messy orgasms each]
B: [smoking a cigarette] Was it good for you?
K: [Squeegeeing bucketfuls of semen from her face and chest] Meh. It was alright.
B: Okay, bye.
K: Bye.

User Comments: That was totally hot. You need to write a sequel!
Author response: Yes it's just part one of my 1000 part serial novel in which the same characters do the same things every chapter with only slight variations in setting and accompanying sexual toys.

When I see a story with less than 1500 words, this is basically what it boils down to in my mind. If you really like to write, you can do better than this.

Don't believe everything that you read.

I just love flash, erotic or otherwise. It takes a lot to boil your idea down to under 1000 words and still have all of the story elements. If someone recommends a writer on here, and they have a flash piece, I usually read it first. It's a nice taste of what a writer can do, IMO.

Yes, this^ should be read as a warning, rather than an endorsement: Flash fiction requires a lot of work and skill to do well. Unfortunately that's not the case with much that gets published as flash fiction on this site (at least not the ones I've come across). However, I'll give flash fiction this - If you're going to be a lazy, unimaginative writer, it's probably better to do it in less than 1000 words, than closer to 10 000.

Don't believe everything that you read.
