Topic: Announcing our "Masked" Story Competition
Posted: 21 May 2018 14:27

Good luck on getting it done RR!

Re the double space issue, couldn't you simply copy the story, put it into a flat file format, then do a find / replace on the spaces?

I'll ask Gav about this, as there may be a way to go through the entire story database, and do the same with the find / replace trick. May be super complicated to program, I have no idea.

Thanks for the bump also!

Topic: The Competition Judging Process
Posted: 08 May 2018 12:35

I've repeated this so many times over the years, I felt it time to simply make it a sticky and be done with it.

There's no special sauce. It's simply the most common sense and intelligent way I / we can think of running competitions fairly.

The competition judging process:

- Our judges are asked to read as many competition stories as they can, over the duration of the competition. We ask them to do this, in case some gems slip through, which should be given due consideration.

- Typically the top 20 - 30 stories (depending on the # entries and story lengths) based on highest average score, are then read. I try to read all the entries if I have the time.

- That list is whittled down to a Top 10-15, which are then sent to a panel of judges.

- The panel is made up of a team of at least half a dozen judges, including moderators, long-term members, and myself.

- The total # points from each judge, for each story, are added together. The stories with the highest point scores, win.

I believe this is the fairest way to do it. It takes several days for me to remove scores from competitors, to read through the stories, score them, write notes and draw up a shortlist. Judges are asked to mention any they feel should be included in the "Top" list.

I have been on all the major story sites, at one time or another. The worst of which basically allocate the top prizes to those stories receiving the highest average scores. That leaves their competitions open to manipulation, as friend spamming is rife. Someone with 500 "friends", can win with a sub-standard story, for example.

Please PM me if you can think of a better solution to the above process.

Topic: Huge issue with mods making changes to my story
Posted: 07 May 2018 01:28

Although we have a set of "Style" rules concerning authors' notes (preferred at the end, for the reasons states above), of course there should be some degree of flexibility.

We are in the process of working out the best way to move forward, with this in mind. Ongoing discussions have been underway for a few weeks now.

The most likely option will be that an author may place their notes at either the beginning or end of a story, but those notes will not be visible in the excerpts shown on the front page.

I think that's the best option going forward.

I'll take a look at your particular story tomorrow and be in touch.

Topic: Which improvements or features would you like to see added?

I know I am still new here and by far not one of the best writers on here. But when it comes to competitions, I would hope that there is more than votes and views that go into choosing the winner. I just entered my first one and have done ok on votes and my views are comparable to the others, but I am not in the lead so to speak. I think this would be a terrible way to choose a winner. I was able to get my story in very early which will equate to more views and votes than someone that pushes it till the end. This would not be fair to them if their story is better than mine. I have personally read all of the stories that are entered and voted on each one. No I did not vote a 5 on each one. I voted according to what I felt it was worth to me as a reader. I feel that every entrant should in the name of fair play, should read every story and give an honest vote. So again this would not be fair to those are unable to get their work in till late. I hope that the mods that are deciding this also do it in a blind voting. Meaning, Gav has a mod voting system setup that collects that votes and compiles them without anyone else ever knowing who voted what on which story. I would hope their voting is also a lot more comprehensive, such as for context, length, quality of writing, readability, and so on. Anyway, I just hope that everyone does well in any competition they choose to enter.

I thought I'd posted a sticky about the process, but perhaps it's because I've mentioned it in so many threads over the years, that I thought I had already! I'll post a revised version of this and make it a sticky next week:

The competition judging process:

- Our judges are asked to read as many competition stories as they can, over the duration of the competition. We ask them to do this, in case some gems slip through, which should be given due consideration.

- Typically the top 20 - 30 stories (depending on the # entries and story lengths) based on highest average score, are then read. I try to read all the entries if I have the time.

- That list is whittled down to a Top 10, which are then sent to a panel of judges.

- The panel is made up of a team of at least half a dozen judges, including moderators, "standard" members, and myself.

- The total # points from each judge, for each story, are added together. The stories with the highest point scores, win.

I believe this is the fairest way to do it. It takes several days for me to remove scores from competitors, to read through the stories, score them, write notes and draw up a shortlist. Judges are asked to mention any they feel should be included in the Top 10.

I have been on many other story sites. The worst of which, basically allocate the top prizes, to those stories receiving the highest average scores. That leaves their competitions open to manipulation, as friend spamming is rife. Someone with 500 "friends", can win with a sub-standard story.

Topic: Moderator of the Month for April

The award for Moderator of the Month for April goes to someone who has not bean listed before, but has ground out a place this time around. Last month, she made a mochary of the story queue. She particularly likes stories involving a Mélange a trois, and guys with big plungers.

She espressos herself with utmost finesse, and always manages to find time and a kind word for those in need.

A huge thanks to browncoffee , for her tireless work and dedication to our collective cause. A fantastic writer (check out her stories if you haven't already!), and all round lovely person.

I'll be in touch re your $100 prize

I'll try and run the script more often to build our database up.

Please let me know if you have any special content requests, and I'll see what I can find.

Enjoy!
