Talented writers? *shuffling inconspicuously into the room and trying to appear as if I belong*

naughtynurse hit the nail on the head with "what if?". That's exactly the question that tends to pop up in my head and gets the literary juices flowing. It used to be harder when I started writing and inspiration would sometimes take extended leaves, but like with most other things, practice makes it easier. The "what if?" questions tends to pop up a few times each hour, and sometimes the smallest things, just a name I read or an image I see, can set an interesting premise for a story. I've even taken to carrying one of those electric fly swats around, to fend off packs of overzealous plot bunnies.

As for chapter updates, I really try my best not to keep readers dangling for ages, but sometimes life interferes or my muses push me into another direction for a while. I used to feel guilty about that, but it's actually part of the learning experience as a writer to get feedback as I go, and it is also a part of Lush's charm to see other writers evolve while their story progresses.

I would love to see a spell checker on email and also on forum posts. I don't know if that is hard to do or if possible. But it would help.

That's something most browsers should already be able to do nowadays when you enter text into a multi line box. I can say that both Firefox and Internet Explorer (10 and later) have that ability, for Internet Explorer 9 there is an add-on called Speckie that does the trick. From what I found in the web, Safari on Mac OS has the capability as has Google Chrome. For Firefox I had to install a dictionary to get it working (right-clicking and selecting the "Language" menu takes you there) because I'm using a localized version and they can't ship those with pre-installed dictionaries for whatever reasons. All of these browsers highlight mistakes by a red squiggly line underneath, and right-clicking the offending word will show possible replacements or let you add it to the dictionary.

can someone help edit my story? pm me if you can I would really appreciate iti

It helps in finding volunteers if you say what category the story is for and how long it is - there's quite a difference between editing a short piece of 1500 words and taking the time to go through 10000. A short description of the story wouldn't hurt either, not everybody is comfortable with all kinds of stories.

I've thrown together a short questionaire with the information I would want to know before offering to have a look at a story:

Story category (where it shoud appear on Lush):

Length (rounded to 500 words):

Narrative (1st/2nd/3rd person):

Tense (past/present):

Detail level (romantic/explicit/hardcore):

Short description (2 to 3 sentences, make sure to include all sexual orientations and kinks not already implied by the category):
I very much agree with the sentiments here. Much depends on who's speaking, but pussy is usually on the safer side of scale. The "kitty" connotation makes it more light-hearted than others to my ears. The just-turned-eighteen neighbor might call it "slit" or "cunt" to be cool in front of his peers though, while the romantic lover can get away with "temple". I guess it's both the variation and the context that count. I'd let the uptight religious virgin call it "vagina" in her own mind, but only until she has something buried inside, experiences her very own spiritual awakening and cries out "god, fuck my cunt!" And as i don't care for any stray plot bunnies right now, if you happen upon one, take it ;)

Oh, but the line between nasty and naughty lies in the eyes of the beholder - and sometimes toeing that line can be an incredibly stimulating and liberating experience

Just a suggestion- Those pagan/wiccan customs go back a very long way and you might look at more traditional mythologies and some books/authors in the fantasy genre for ideas. In non-fiction, Robert Graves "The White Goddess," and Joseph Campbell's "Primitive Mythology" and "Myths to Live By," for instance. Also H.R. Ellis Davidson's "Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe." On a fictional level, Mary Renault's "The King Must Die." Gene Wolfe's Wizard Knight duology as well as Poul Anderson's books which are based, like Wolfe's, on the mythology of the Norse; "The War of the Gods," "Hrolf Kraki," and "The Broken Sword." Perhaps they could also be valuable to you.

The below are the lyrics for "Raven" by Hedningarna. I heard the translation for this song is inaccurate, but still, it's interesting, based on the "Fox Woman" of northern Europe. Maybe she can be one of your murder suspects.

Thank you for all the input, and sorry I didn't reply earlier. I was about to a few times, but then some ideas popped up in my head while I re-read your post that I simply had to research... I know, I'm bad ;)
I'll definitely give one or more of the non-fiction books a look, this is going to be the most research I have ever done for writing and can use all the pointers I get. I've already spent hours digging through heaps of fascinating information and ideas, but I still feel I've barely scratched the surface.

I'll have to keep my hands away from all pagan and wiccan fiction until I'm done with the story though, or I'll end up totally distracted - I found that I can't mix too much pleasure reading with writing. In the worst case, my own ideas will get mixed up with the book I'm reading and I'll have to stop writing because I run into danger of unconsciously copying parts. Had that happen before in another genre, and when I noticed that some sentences had jumped right out of the book I had been reading the week before, I was already at 40,000 words sad

The fox woman is actually a brilliant idea. The thought of weaving a mythological shapeshifter into the story has been at the back of my mind all along, as I plan to give my main character (or characters, haven't ecided yet how deeply I'll involve her best friend) serious doubts about her sanity. And a foxy lady is always good to have in a story *giggles*.

It's not even April yet and I am 100% confident these goals will be met & then maybe another.

You're aware that finishing all of April's goals before the month has even started means you earn a failing grade and have to donate your panties to the forum?
The definition of "plot" is a fuzzy subject in itself. I do primarily write pure erotica where the plot is mostly about the characters interactions, how they establish power balances and get sucked into a world far outside of what they knew. I'm very much with dpw there though, there has to be a build-up of suspense and something tangible about the characters that goes beyond physical attributes, but it is also left to the author's skill how to work that into the story, and sometimes jumping right in is just the way to go about.

Others may argue that what I write isn't even real plot, and in a way they are right. In every other genre the influence from outside forces in a story needs to be a lot stronger to weave a compelling tale. But that's because plot is a means to drive conflict and change, and erotica already sits on a wellspring of those two smile

That said, to write vivid erotica with a strong plot is the ultimate goal, but not every plot bunnie wants to jump down that winded tube, no matter how many carrots and sticks I use.
Chapter 6 of my ongoing series "Her Neighbor's Games" (not for the faint of the heart) has just been approved, and with that one I've crossed the mark of 100000 words that I've published here on Lush.

So, free champagne for everyone, just grab a glass!

I only started writing at Lush half a year ago, and I would never have imagined that I'd write that much. A story/chapter per month, I'd have agreed to that, but the number above still feels crazy to me.

It's because Lush is such a brilliant place, thank you Nicola, Gav and all the moderators.

And a huge thanks also to everyone else who comments, scores, befriends and pokes me, and also to all of you who make me smile and giggle and frown and think each time I delve into the forum. Lush has become not just a place to share my stories, it's a second home, a place to be free and a constant source of inspiration, because of you.

'nough said.

Torchwood. One of the few series available in original voice here in Germany, and listening to the Welsh lilt is addictive.

The long novel I've written (about 145k words) took just a few months of active writing, although the rewrite/revision process took a while. But once I'm past the initial active writing and am into revising I find I'm able to begin something new without too much difficulty.

I find it even makes revising easier to have something new going, because it takes my mind out of the existing story and makes it easier to look at it from a distance to spot errors and typos.

Once part 4 is up, you can edit part 3, change the drop down link and save it. I don't believe this requires any work on behalf of the moderating team, it should just update without needing to be re-approved.

Hope this helps.

A lot That was the missing piece of information that totally changes things.

Perhaps (guessing that Haineko and I aren't the only two people afraid to make the moderation pile overflow) this could be added to the FAQ?
Quote by Haineko
Linking to the next chapter would only work when they're all up.

Yep, that's why I thought about an option on the "my stories" page. But it would still need be disabled until the new chapter is approved.

Quote by Haineko
Maybe people would be able to go back and edit it that way. But then you got the reverification process and extra work for the mods no one wants.

That's the worst case scenario and not much different from asking a moderator directly to change all the links. If only a third of the 30000+ stories are serials, that could become a hell of an annoying job.

And I guess a lot depends on how the current system works, whether the link is stored inside the story text itself or inserted by the software each time the story is visited.

It might also be possible to have a separate checkbox on the edit page that tells the system to ignore all other changes and only update the link, that way it could be routed right through without hitting the moderation queue.
I just interrupted sprite from her beauty sleep (not that I'm convinced she needs any), and she confirmed that this is in fact how things work. I don't know where my eyes have been all that time, then. Okay, I do know, but I'll admit nothing.

The idea of consciously linking to the previous chapter hadn't really crossed my mind yet, but then, I'm sometimes famous for my single-mindedness smile

Perhaps having both would be a good idea? I.e. being able to select "previous chapter" and "next chapter" and have both directions updated in the current as well as the "surrounding" stories.
Or, if it is technically feasible, perhaps the linking could be added as a feature to "my stories" page, so changing the link doesn't trigger a new submission.

Just bouncing ideas right now.
All goals for March reached, yay!

Now onto April. I thought I might tread a little slower next month. But then I realized that is so not me, hehe.

So here's my todo list: publish 6 chapters for my ongoing stories and bring at least one of them full circle. Try to earn another recommended read by fine-combing everything again and again before posting. Start outlining The Moon Forest (just a working title), a boiling hot modern-day potpourri of crime, mystery and magic, before I forget all the ideas that are swirling in my head. And finally, write at least one story for a category I haven't touched yet.
Just a fleeting thought that has entered my mind for the third time now, so I'll share it, even though I really feel bad about possibly adding to Gav's pile:
With the number of new categories it has become incredibly difficult to get the Omnium badge, so how about a "light version" to encourage diversity in writing. Perhaps awarding a "Versatile" badge if an author has stories in 20 categories, which would be a little more than half of the existing ones? This might be doable for some of the authors here and push them to leave their chosen nesting places occasionally ;)
Thank you Candy.

I don't think this is something that should involve manual changes. I'm sure now that the system used to work the other way round, that the dropdown box at the bottom of the chapter did let you select which other chapter should link to the current one.

I've done some digging, and the chapter links are a mess for everyone, not just me, so this is definitely a backend issue, and it can probably make reading multipart stories a bit tedious for readers not that familiar with the site, because you need to go back to the author's stories page to find the link for the next chapter. I'll pm Gav directly, I've up to now not done that because of his request in the profile to use the contact form.

Thank you again smile

Edit: Looking at the exact wording below the dropdown, it actually seems to be the way it is intended to work now. Hm. Doesn't make all that much sense, unless I submit chapters in reverse order.

It's funny, I got the urge to listen to Show Me Love right after reading that. Hey, a girl can dream!

To me, inspiration is a flower that simply grows everywhere, sometimes where I least expect it. It can spring from watching people around me, from a magnificent view in a distant part of the world, it has hit me 8 miles above ground just as it has while I was doing the dishes and staring at soap suds.

I guess I'm lucky, because inspiration seems to find me. Sometimes almost too much of it, that's why I'm always carrying a barnyard full of unruly plot bunnies around in my head. You can't imagine what a mess those critters always try to make!
Bump!? Nic, Gav, did anyone read this or the notice I sent with the form? Haven't gotten a response yet sad

CHRISSIE....its her FANGS that are dangerous and beware if she turns her flame thrower on you ....and I have the HIGHEST RESPECT for Miss Spriteness.[-o< [-o< [-o<

But shouldn't one always be nice and to cuddle with people with sharp fangs? I've been doing that ever since grandma read me the story of snowred and the seven wolves, in hopes that I might get kissed awake by that girl with the long hair, rhubarb I think? And I don't fear flamethrowers when there's enough moisture around. Ooops. Did I write that out loud? *blushes prettily*
There's something incredibly liberating in sleeping naked. Even more so when it's summer and the house has warmed up enough so that I don't even need a blanket.

Chrissielecker...you need to be careful around Miss Sprite and not trifle with her. She might be a little "sprite", but she can be very ferocious and she can and will bite!

And who said that would be a bad thing? *tongue-in-cheek*

Quote by asleep
You'll do well to give her plenty of room. Don't ask me how I know

*giggles* Oh, there's still plenty of room for Her Spriteness to bite. I mean, yeah, I'll be careful. Really. Honestly. Well, I'm rather certain. *crossesfingersbehindback*

And big, big thanks to all the mods, one truly can't say it often enough. There's a reason we're all hanging out here to write and read and not somewhere else. Lush wouldn't be this brilliant place without you and all the time, work and nerves you put into helping us turn our scribbling into something worth sharing.
I can't believe nobody's mentioned ginger roots yet - admittedly, they're not your average cuddly sex toy, but right there along with clothes spins, ice cubes and rope to give the so inclined one hell of a solo time *winks*

nope - i'm perfectly happy to administer beatings to whomever. that said, for mods, it's a perk. for anyone else, it'll cost you.

In what currency are you paid? And would I get a discount if I promise to stay put and wiggle nicely? *wink*

Send pix!!!

Seriously, I've got no idea what flan is, and google images couldn't really help me either. Other than that it is sweet, I'm clueless. I mean, more clueless as usually. At least that I'm aware of. Am I rambling?

Oops, strike that. The picture just didn't load at the first try.

i think this is a brilliant idea, actually. also, i think it'd be great if you had a set time to submit stuff, lets say a 5 minutes window that we assign you. if you miss it, you have to wait another 24 hours and try again. best of luck, BB. smile

Now the whole time difference thing on the forum makes sense to me. It has all been your long-going nefarious plan to trap us unsuspecting writers into never being able to successfully submit our stories ever again! Hah, admit it!
