hmmm, this one is difficult to answer. On different days I might use different material. Some days its the stories here(although admittedly less so now that I am reading so very many of them) Some days its a chat with some of the very select people I chat with. My brother works with many large chicken farms(egg producers) as he transports the major money maker for these farms: the manure. The farms that he hauls for include caged and free range. Those farms make approximately $1 per bird over the life of the bird from the eggs. The manure from eggs is the real money maker. It is one of the best fertilizers for the fields(producing grains for vegetarians and meat eaters alike). Additionally, this farm utilizes a digester to turn the methane from manure to methane, creating 1.8 megawatts.
The free range birds might be out of a cage, and the doors might be open, but they don't go outside and peck around like a household bird might. These are birds that are bred for generations and generations of very selective breeding. They sit and eat and sit and eat. They are the chicken equivalent to the video game/McDonald eating kid.
Chickens, btw, make excellent pets. They are an effective and pesticide free method of insect control.
