I think I've actually used myself more often than not. Never my whole face, and that will probably remain true. I don't use my whole face for the same reasons you state, V. There is, however, a certain thrill to showing off portions of myself.
The one on there right now? Yeah, that's me.
I've tried the self-waxing thing as well. As Doll said, kudos. Your bravery is more than mine. These days, I let the pros do my waxing for me. It's worth it to me, especially when doing the harder to reach places.
As for the 'cut hairs' that you described, this is actually a fairly common thing for me as well, even having it done at the salon. I'm terrible about maintaining the habit, though, so have gone long stretches without getting waxed. Everything I have heard and read indicates that as your hair gets 'used' to being waxed, it will extract better and less painfully.
I imagine that for the first four or six months, you'll have to do what's called a 'clean up' session, where you get the cut hairs during a mini waxing session.
One thing I have learned about waxing, be sure to exfoliate the waxed area frequently. Exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs, which can be painful and unsightly.
