Yup, it's her birthday. Please join me in wishing the beautiful and talented Delphi a very happy birthday, and reminding her she has a world class booty. Don't forget to give her a firm, open handed smack on the ass to emphasize the point...but please try to alternate cheeks in order to maintain a consistent rose tint on each side. And now that she's old enough to drink, cocktails are being served.

Oh...and what a great gesture it would be to hit on her red hot story https://www.lushstories.com/stories/reluctance/officer-friendly.aspx and give it a little push toward the Famous status it's getting so close to. Read it if you have time and haven't already. It's a smoker!

Happy birthday, sweetie.
The Basketball Diaries, but he's been great in quite a lot of his movies, even when the movie itself wasn't so good. Shutter Island and Catch Me if You Can are also up there. He's not just a movie star, he's an excellent actor...not always the same thing.

Would that be the original or the one with Nicole Kidman, or both? Did you just swear under your breath?

The one with Nicole Kidman. And yeah, I might've cussed just a bit lol smile
This is a great book. Simple, understandable and straight forward advice from a real master of prose. If you only have one style guide, this is the one it should be.
The attitude you're (OP) describing is naive at its best, and bigoted at its worst. While it may be well-intentioned, in the end it only serves to further the division between human beings. Poetry or prose - showing or telling - a writer's job is hopelessly simple: observe and report. Manipulate the readers' attention so they notice what you want them to and try to stay the fuck out of their way as much as possible. If there's any truth or music at home in the writer's heart or mind, it will come through sooner or later. But in any writing workshop, there are rarely more than a couple of people who will still be writing, say, five or ten years later when style, technique, sensibility and vision finally begin to merge. But then again, how many of us can really stand to take this shit this seriously? Fuck it. Just use whatever imagination you have and tell somebody a fucking story.

Here's what I didn't learn even in the best of the workshops I once took part in: that anguish, disappointment, joy, lust, yearning, fear and the desire to be loved and accepted are universal. It doesn't matter where you're from, what language you speak, what color your skin is or how much money you make. It doesn't matter if you have boobs or a penis...or wish you had boobs or a penis. We're so fucking hell-bent on pointing out everything that makes us different we can't even remember how much the same we ultimately are.

If someone told me I only had permission to write about white, nearsighted American males with adjustment issues I would fall dead on the spot from boredom.

A writer friend of mine asked me why was I writing for that. She was referring to Lush.
This is how I responded...

Lush Stories announced it's "Historical Erotica" Story Competition to launch the new Erotic Historical Story Category. First place wins $150, second place wins $100 and third place wins $50. Keep in mind, the last competition on Lush won someone $250 and over 6,000 readers in less than 20 days (that's before it actually won the competition and was advertised by a support group of over 280,000 members). An honorable mention gave a piece of mine over 8,000 readers. Let's see, the "general self-pub'd" E-book published is free or around $1.99. At least for a lot of people I know. And, it may be an excellent read. And admittedly, you are good. You are also a new writer. Your audience depends on how the wind is blowing unless you are really good at promoting yourself. I've won $250 for one poem and a short story. I also had over 68,000 readers between the two. My promotion was limited at best. I just said please read me. Now that's just for two really small pieces of work. I have more stories there with readers of those. I'm probably okay at best, most likely not as good as you. I've had people leave me messages asking me how can they find my books--and I haven't even finished the manuscript for my first erotic romance book. How much money did you make on your ebook? It was $2.99, but now it's free. How many readers did you get? Just saying. I may have a warped view of ebooks, my knowledge is limited at best. Just saying.

I don't respond well to self entitled arrogance.

So yeah, I'd advise publishing here on Lush and it be a true representation of how you write--not a draft.
Then if it's working and there is enough of it to actually be a "book", go for it. I'd love to have a Lush book. *Clears throat*

How interesting. LP would love to have an ABG ebook to publish.

Something.

(I know, I'm so juvenile.)

Adulthood is grossly overrated...so they tell me smile
Pinker's book looks interesting and fun. (How sad does that sound!?)

Please do.

I never quoted a published source verbatim; the example I posted was my own work.

Yes, it was. And a very fine example, too.

The preposition "onto", as one word, is acceptable if we are referring to something "to the position of", or, "on the surface of".

Examples:

"He fell onto the floor."

"His mouth latched onto her nipple."

However, if we want our preposition "onto" to mean "onwards and towards", we write it as two separate words.

Examples:

"Let's move on to the next question."

"I hope to go on to university once I leave school."

This is an excellent explanation. And yes, it works the same way here in the United Snakes.

On a general side note, those quoting examples verbatim from published sources really need to cite them.

That's how I was taught in England. If the US rules differ, please elaborate.

This is an excellent explanation. And yes, it works the same way here in The United Snakes.

Eyes stare hard is perfectly fine. It's just not the most effective writing. As something to throw out to illustrate a grammatical example, it serves its purpose just fine.

To say "eyes stare" or "eager hands" is called synecdoche. A glare is hard, but a stare is only when you look at something (or nothing) for a long time.

What Chrissie says here is all sound, although there's some confusion in the last part between participial phrases and progressive verb forms.

But fuck it. I most appreciate that Chrissie approaches a topic that to most people is about as pleasant as shoveling mud with your face, yet she does so with a light and positive attitude to make it seem less threatening. The vast majority of people learn to hate reading and writing because they're mistakenly taught that their technical errors are more important than they really are and diminish what they're trying to say. Yeah, yeah, yeah...this isn't to say that something can't be written with total incompetence and end up being incomprehensible. Sure. Good grammar and good writing may overlap to varying degrees, but they are distinctly different creatures.

It works perfectly now. Thanks very much Gav.

And adding on another note of thanks to Gav for all that hard work and perseverance. Your work is a benefit to us all.

a few things - we don't do fan fiction.

also, i don't recall if i meant to suggest it and forget or if i actually did suggest it, that we do a comp where past winners and mods are exempt? i think it's something i wouldn't hate seeing, honestly.

If the idea is to make it a "new" talent comp, then why not even limit the time contestants have been members. Open to those who've been members no more than a year by the date of the comp deadline. Maybe even Liz will think the fresh meat angle will have that sexy zombie appeal.
I have to imagine you'd make a marvelous writing partner. It's so tempting to write with you, but I know I'd only end up giving you high blood pressure. Just ask Delphi. lol Good luck finding someone. Better yet, hopefully the right idea will come to you.

What was the third? I only saw OK and okay.

The other is O.K. Okay?
A quick look here should help authors and verifiers decide which form each individual prefers. There are three correct choices.
Wow! Thank you, Saga and curvygalore! I hope you'll both enjoy the story. Please be advised: the story contains gratuitous sex.

The cover looks great.

This will be loaded onto my kindle this week.

Good luck with the promotions!

Thank you kindly, ma'am biggrin
Just thought I'd take a moment to let anyone who's interested know about my newest ebook, Burning Star. This is a short novel that had its origins right here on Lush a couple of years ago. It was just released yesterday, and is now available on Amazon. The opening chapter was featured here, but the more extensive story is featured in the book. Much thanks to any and all who have a moment to check it out.

Peace.

Happy Birthday! You rock, of course, which should be obvious. And I suppose birthdays are a great time to say the things we think every day but don't say out loud...like thanks for the incredible faith. That and throw a party you won't soon forget...Lush style, of course!

GW,

Metilda's point about simply hiding your stories vs removing them completely is an excellent one. And what she's saying about Amazon changing their policy as well is worth considering. I'm still undecided about it, but I'm not especially fond of Amazon to begin with, and they are biased against erotica regardless of the revenues they collect from it.

You can certainly change your name here without losing any part of your profile. I'd suggest asking one of the mods who to contact for help. If you visit the Lush Publishing forum here you can get the general rundown on how, where and what to submit. You can also send me a PM anytime you'd like if you have any questions.

I don't mean to sound disparaging, but poetry may not be the best way to test the waters. It's not a popular item anywhere, and you're sure to get a better audience right here than anywhere else. New readers can get to know you here.

Feel free to send a PM, if you like, but if Nicola and Metilda are offering, too, write to them as well. It can't hurt to get as much information and different points of view as you can.
