I've never been late, because I've always been punctual and often manage to arrive with a few minutes to spare... 😇 Hypothetically, however, a favourite excuse could well be that the traffic is/was murder...

If (hypothetically, of course) I happened to be walking a few blocks to (say) meet a girlfriend's parents for the first time and (hypothetically) turned up about half an hour late - with alcohol breath - the excuse offered might possibly be that I was diverted by helping a little old lady carry some heavy groceries and she happened to invite me into her humble little cottage for a glass of wine and some cake as a reward. Theoretically, that excuse might be accepted, with the alternative being a GF who was so pissed off ...

but, that's all hypothetical...
