The Sun is not a thermo nuclear reaction - burning through millions of tons of hydrogen per second.

Who the fuck ever put their names to such ridiculous statements, is what I wonder. Where they name Chesebro or Clarke, or Trump?

(Don't lock the thead, please).

The moon has been pulling away from Earth, since it was 'captured' by gravity, billions of years ago. By modern measurements it's creeping 1 centimeter a year, farther away from Earth - it's point of reference.

What are biilions of centimeters, in terms of distance? Who wants to do the rudimentary maths? 4.7 billion years x 1 centimeter per year, equals how many miles..?

There's a pretty good theory about how the moon has influenced LIFE on Earth via the tidal waves which the moon has imparted to this planet.

There's a pretty good theory about how that is all bullshit.

I quit believing in the bullshit when I was about 20 years old and public libraries were still a thing in 'murica.

You jealous fucks are really only concerned with why some people have gained a perceived advantage over you, through no fault of your own, you find you are a minority class - unable to access the same offset-benefits the oppressed minority enjoys.

This is how you think you're going to wipe out affirmative action. Culture warriors. Another term invented by misogynistic racists and spoken often enough - maybe you can get a dictionary to officially recognize the slang as something legitimate.

Your example shows that the free speech right is "bigger or "larger" than the anti-discrimination laws. The free speech right applies to everybody in the society, but the anti-discrimination laws only apply to parts or groups of the society.

Those anti-discrimination laws apply primarily to those being discriminated upon and those doing the discriminating. The latter has greater incentive to hide this activity from interested agencies. It lessens the importance by simply calling them: parts or groups of society

Just days before the Republican Party holds it's first 2024 Presidential debate, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) took the pages of the New York Times to urge contenders for the party's nomination who stand no chance of winning to drop out and back one candidate who stands a chance of defeating Donald Trump as the party's nominee.

"If Mr. Trump is the Republican nominee for president in 2024, Republicans will lose up and down the ballot," he added, "Donald Trump is beatable, and it starts in Iowa and New Hampshire. Ignore the national polls that show he is leading — they are meaningless. It’s a reflection of the national conversation, name ID, and who is top of mind — not where the momentum is headed."

Neiman Marcus filed for bankruptcy when your president was large in charge and bellowing daily. Biden's economy has been pretty good for me and mine.

How's it doing now that it's out of Chapter 11?

Hell, I figured you Trump fanatics appreciated bankruptcies. How many has the Grifter in Chief filed for himself and his businesses over the last 40 years?

Makes him imminently qualified to manage and guide a dollar behemoth, doesn't it?

Always trying to make it as difficult as possible for Americans to cast a vote in an election. GQP doctrine

A Georgia city council member who promoted bilingual ballots for an upcoming election was censured by her colleagues just a week after the council agreed to allow residents to vote on her proposal, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Morrow City Council in a 4-1 special session vote Tuesday censured Councilwoman Van T. Tran on allegations of “unacceptable behavior and inappropriate actions towards city employees,” according to a document cited in the report.

“The city has received multiple complaints against and grievances from the city of Morrow regarding Councilwoman Tran’s unacceptable behavior and inappropriate actions taken toward city employees in violation (of the) city’s charter and city’s policies,” the censure document reads.

Trump has a similar media flair, modis operandi and magnetic fate awaiting him as did John Gotti. With extra kraut and ketchup.

Thirty-five counts from what i hear. Yes, he is going to be arrested, convicted and imprisoned. And this is just the warm up for what is going to come. If there is a God, Donald J. Trump will die in a prison cell next to a MS19 lifer.

A doctor decapitated a woman's baby during a "nightmare" delivery in Georgia, a legal case has claimed.

Dr Tracey St Julian is being sued for gross negligence by Jessica Ross and Treveon Taylor, whose son died at Southern Regional Hospital during a complicated birth.

Several nurses are also being sued for concealing the incident.

Their lawyers claimed Dr St Julian had been too forceful with the baby during the delivery.

The Right keeps winning in MAGA world. All of this winning gives hope to a chronic masturbater addicted to online porn, who is running for office in 2024. And he's not the orange baboon.

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/huddle/2023/08/18/a-gop-challengers-frank-talk-about-sexual-sin-00111808

Pennsylvania Republican Mark Houck, who is challenging Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick from the right in a battleground district, revealed during a 2020 interview that he “struggled” with exposure to pornography and the “sexual sin, masturbation and stuff” that resulted.

“I struggled with pornography and being exposed to it at a young age,” Houck told host Jeff Garrett. “Of course, that leads to, you know, sexual sin, masturbation and stuff. And so, that was a chronic habit that I had that just became a bad habit. Ultimately it was self-medication, I can say initially, and then it became a bad habit.”

Houck’s previously unreported remarks about his behavior are not his first open acknowledgment of his interest in porn — a 2011 report on a Catholic-centered group that he co-founded connected its work to his “16-year pornography addiction.”

Sounds like they haven't figured out the new economy very well and are looking to cast blame everywhere except at those who are not managing very well.

Let me know when Neiman Marcus blames the pandemic, the homeless, and everything else under the sun for their declining sales.

Anti-Press Hatred Is Alive and Well in Kansas

The assault on the Marion County Record is another reminder that Trumpism is a threat to press freedom.

I wonder if those stupid SOBs actually attempted to gain access to said computers while in their custody.

Someone's ass is grass in this debacle.

That lawnmower is being rolled out of storage in preparation for a good mowing.

https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article278237263.html

This is a good place to start.

The Kansas magistrate judge who authorized a police raid of the Marion County Record newsroom over its probe into a local restaurateur’s drunken-driving record has her own hidden history of driving under the influence.

Judge Laura Viar, who was appointed on Jan. 1 to fill a vacant 8th Judicial District magistrate seat, was arrested at least twice for DUI in two different Kansas counties in 2012, a Wichita Eagle investigation found. She was the lead prosecutor for Morris County at the time.

Viar’s DUI history could face scrutiny because the warrant she approved for the controversial raid came in response to the Marion County Record digging into the DUI history of restaurant owner Kari Newell. The Viar-authorized raid came after Newell complained about the newspaper’s investigation into her criminal background.

That judge has gotten some official help at many points in her career since 2011 (during another failed Republican CHRISTIAN administration which was burying Kansans in future debts.

She shouldn't even be a magistrate judge - as reporters will eventually find how she managed to hide her own two separate DUI incidents from the authority which would later promote her up the ladder to her current position. How in the fuck did THAT happen?

MAGA in its infancy (Tea Party) is how that happened.

It's a petty irritation that I can't post this in the Free Speech thread where it literally should be placed, because...

Anti-Press Hatred Is Alive and Well in Kansas

The assault on the Marion County Record is another reminder that Trumpism is a threat to press freedom.

https://theintercept.com/2023/08/15/marion-county-record-raid/

...things have gotten much worse over the past few years. Hatred of the press has deepened on the extreme right, stoked by Donald Trump and his paranoid acolytes.

Trump labeled the press the “enemy of the people,” a fascist slogan that has now seeped into common usage on the right. Physical attacks on journalists in the United States are becoming more common and are now a signature of right-wing extremism; reporters who covered the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol were assaulted and had their equipment damaged.

Eric Meyer, the owner and publisher of the Marion County Record, was stunned by Friday’s raid, which involved the town’s entire five-member police force and two sheriff’s deputies. He told the Kansas Reflector that the message from police and the local political establishment was clear: “Mind your own business or we’re going to step on you.”

It is probably not surprising that the local establishment that is attacking the Marion County Record is at the same time supporting an extreme right-winger like LaTurner, who has not commented on the raid on his Twitter account. Meyer told the Associated Press that “this is the type of stuff that, you know, that Vladimir Putin does, that Third World dictators do.”

(The Intercept and other news organizations signed a letter from Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press condemning the raid.)

The unjustified assault on the Marion County Record is another reminder that press freedom is one of the most important democratic traditions under threat from Trumpism.

Right wingers started the culture wars over 40 years ago during the 1st term of Grandpa Reagan - gradually warping and folding this vocal mayhem into battle cries against POLITICAL CORRECTNESS & they amplified that in the run-up to the 2nd gulf war against Iraq (Dixie Chicks) and they've perfected it's abuse every year since then - while managing (in some circles) to convince their base - that the left WOKE liberals invented and routinely practice cancel culture.

I was curious what the recent kerfuffle in Marion Kansas was about - now we know. Conservatives using the local police force to illegally raid a small-town newspaper because the newspaper was investigating rumors to see if there was any truth involving illegal activities and they scared the feels out of the local GQP majority in the town. Who then sicced a judge and law enforcement upon them to seize computer equipment.

I wonder if those stupid SOBs actually attempted to gain access to said computers while in their custody.

Someone's ass is grass in this debacle.

She and her staff have connected the dots, painted within the lines and by-the-numbers. They've stated their findings and (for those who bother to read and can understand big words and simple concepts) are attempting to shame the other states (where illegal electors in each state, also were employed) to get with the program or be seen as complicit to continuing the hiding of facts as well the secret nationwide conspiracy hatched by Trump and his thirsty lawyers.

https://www.emptywheel.net/2023/08/15/the-various-kinds-of-georgia-crimes-in-the-rico-indictment/

There’s so much good reporting out of Georgia that I’m going to mostly leave close coverage of the Georgia case to them going forward.

But the Georgia prosecution will interact with Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation in interesting ways.

To explain how, I want to first show that the indictment is, fundamentally, about protecting the integrity of Georgia’s government and elections. To see that, it helps to read counts 2 through 41 before reading the RICO charge, which is laid out in 70 pages describing 161 overt acts, many of which took place outside of Georgia.

Those counts fall into the following groups:

'Conservative Judge' - Requires attorneys for the defendant in a case before him - to attend and 'complete' religious 'liberty' training before proceeding with said case. (This is considered the new normal plateau to achieve - under a MAGA fueled regime).

https://nordot.app/1064230182650315213?c=592622757532812385

(Reuters) - A judicial reform advocacy group on Tuesday filed a complaint accusing a Texas federal judge of engaging in misconduct by taking the "strange" step of requiring three attorneys for Southwest Airlines to attend "religious liberty training" by a prominent conservative Christian legal group.

The head of the group Fix the Court in a judicial misconduct complaint filed with the 5th Circuit Judicial Council accused U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr in Dallas of violating the judicial code of conduct by assigning a sectarian organization to carry out the attorney sanctions he ordered in a religious bias case brought by a flight attendant against the airline.

That organization, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), is a well-known conservative legal group previously not involved in the case that advocates for religious liberty and has brought cases challenging LGBTQ rights and the ability of women to secure abortions.

Jim Campbell, ADF's chief legal counsel, in a statement called it "baseless and intolerant to suggest that people of faith cannot provide legal instruction simply because their religious beliefs might differ from their audience's."

Starr, a former assistant Texas attorney general, was appointed to the bench in 2019 by former Republican President Donald Trump.

He is the nephew of Kenneth Starr, who spearheaded the investigation that led to the impeachment of former Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1998 and was a member of ADF's Supreme Court Advisory Council before his death in September 2022.

Starr did not respond to requests for comment.

Much of what you've said there is why the pic in the OP won't happen.

Giving tax breaks every few years to the corporations and upper 10% of wage earners so they can hoard $ since the 1980s - while denying the rest of America all the better things our lives could be if we weren't propping up billionaires, allowing hundreds of thousands to cheat on paying their taxes.

Just 1 example: (Denying the hiring of 160 plus IRS agents to police the cheaters is a great way to extend the grift - instead, let's arm officers and teachers and establish a police station inside every public and private grade school, junior high and high school with the money earmarked for those IRS agent hires).

Keep allowing Republican and Democrat congressmen/women to play the NYSE using their insider information gleaned from sitting in on special committees and seeing the future - 3 to 12 months before ordinary investors. THAT has worked great (for congressmen) since 1981.

If we were to go back to the taxation levels prevalent in America during the 1960s - we could get back into the black and out of the red in less than 10 years, cut back on our military spending and reroute those funds to infrastructure expenditures.

We're too busy allowing our Supreme Court justices to sell their decisions to the highest anonymous bidders (looking directly at Alito and Thomas here - curious which other Republicans were playing those silent games to enrich themselves at OUR expense to keep propping up billionaires in America).

We're too busy NOT investigating and indicting and prosecuting the treasonous criminals who tried to overthrow the legitimate votes of over 80 million people in America who voted - primarily against the Trump crime spree. Our 'new' DOJ stalled on even initiating a cursory investigation of the Trumplets - cuz they didn't want to upset them? What about the 80 plus million people you're failing to support, motherfuckers!

Do Your Jobs Better.

The infrastructure costs necessary to design and build the system would be immense and increasing every year - first to create everything - then to maintain everything.

The rails have to be elevated or underground - they cannot have grade crossings. They can't use any of the thousands of miles of existing rails - as they are built for handling heavy loads and not high speeds - plus you can't have high speed rail sharing the same tracks (most aren't contiguous ribbon rail, but even if they were) you'd still have to deal with freight traffic clogging up the tracks.

As a nation we can't even maintain our highways, bridges, tunnels and turnpikes for automobiles. We can't rebuild or bring up to date our 1960s era electrical transmission lines and towers and...

We do a shitty job with maintaining and protecting our current infrastructure (which could use a couple dollar capital investment, also).

You'd have to plot out new paths for the tracks which need to anchored solidly to the ground. You'll need to traverse creeks, rivers (bays/gulfs) etc - which are also used for barge & tanker traffic. You'd have to acquire the right of way for all of these routes. That expense will be large also.

Might be cheaper to send a 1500 person colony to Mars and set up terraforming. Both would probably take as long to accomplish also.

Sorry to piss on everyone's Post Toasties.

As of 9:00 pm tonight, Donald Trump has now officially been indicted for felony election interference in Atlanta, Georgia.

I smoked an extra bud in the bong just moments ago - celebrating these most recent indictments. My cat finally interrupted my glee and she told me to go inside and check LushStories.

A year and a half ago, Marge the Barge claimed jewish space lasers were responsible for the California wildfires. Did she not? That DEW remark caused uproar for the antisemitism inherent in her remarks, not because of the absurdity of the American government targeting it's own citizens with direct energy weapons.

Everything these jokers claim is horrendous, is a purposeful, multi-layered conspiracy being enacted by The DEEP State. The murky, unknown - THEM. They say this shit, because it vibes with their base of unoriginal thinking mouth breathers.
