I don't know about stories being written by women being more popular. Some of my favorite authors on this site are men honestly. I think there is no way to accurately tell which is more popular. Votes/Comments are nit a good way of judging the quality of a story. I have seen some great stories get low scores at the same time of seeing really shitty stories get great ratings. So this system is not an accurate representation of good and bad or liked and disliked.

As for who I write for. In the beginning I wrote for myself, it was my way of expressing something that needed to be expressed. As time went on and people started giving me more positive feedback, I began to write for others and not myself. I realized this not to long ago and just recently started writing for myself again and I feel better about my work because of it. Though I do still hope that people enjoy what I write.
