The reason why Brazil and so many other countries play so cautiously is because it could be fatal to lose your first game. Same for the comment of going through the middle. By keeping your outside offensive players standing wide on the field you create a big area where play might occur. That can be dangerous.
Of course this makes for boring games and that's what most games have been.
Once we get to the final games in the group phase you'll see countries taking more risks if they have to win to qualify for the knock-out phase. That might lead to some entertaining games.

Have you seen "El secreto de sus ojos" with Ricardo Darín? It won the Oscar for best foreign movie this year. I thought it was an awesome movie.
Another movie that positively surprised me is "Unthinkable" with Samuel L. Jackson. Very gritty and doesn't avoid touching on some serious issues.
