I was working at a diesel locomotive shop when somebody came by and told us that a plane just hit a tower in NYC. Curious, we went to the bosses office in time to see the second plane hit. A short while later it was announced that a plane had gone down in Shanksville. That was 15 miles from my house. I had a strange feeling of dread and helplessness. I called my wife then signed out and went home. When I got home I saw the fighter jets flying overhead. What an eerie time the next few days were. we drove to Shanksville later in the week but couldn't get close to the crash site but a farmer had built a small wall of hay bales at the end of the road and the mementos, prayers and flags were already being posted. A time I will never forget.

I was shy with girls in high school. My best friend and his girl friend invited me to ride around town (surely everyone rode the circuit on Friday night) with them and her best friend whose name was Gloria! It was pretty dull and awkward for the first hour, then this song came on the radio and the switch was flipped so to speak. I started teasing her and we just laughed and had a great time from then on. We rode around til past midnight on miles and miles of country roads and it was one of the most enjoyable nights I had during high school. Funny how the simplest things are the most memorable sometimes. It still comes to mind now and then just like it did tonight.
