Although I am a fan of the show, I am somewhat perplexed by how unsuccessful the contestants are.

There have been over 2,100 episodes, with two teams per show buying a total of three 'bargains' each. That's over 12,000 purchases. In that time, the biggest profit was £640, when a piece of Worcester bought for £140 sold for £800. As someone who works in fine arts, I find it hard to to understand how there hasn't been at least one 'find' or a 'sleeper' in all that time. If I randomly bought 12,000 items with at least some degree of acumen, I would expect at least a handful of four figure profits.

The premise of the show is absurd. The idea is that the contestants buy stuff from an antique shop, and then sell it at an auction. But antique dealers make their money by doing exactly the opposite. So it's hardly surprising that the contestants don't do very well.

That's true. Traders are selling at retail prices, so any margins are going to be slim. However, you would have thought something would have slipped through. I don't expect someone to find a Renoir but maybe a piece of early Moorcroft or a bit of Lalique.

I watch this from time to time and agree with you. You would expect them to do better — esp as they have supposed "experts" on hand to bounce off.

I googled "The best profit on Bargain Hunt" and got this:

Different show, but similar premise.
