JOKER. Though I'm younger than most people here. I enjoyed it.
El Camino. A loose end that didn’t need tying.

Happy Time Murders

After hearing and reading so many bad reviews, I was not going to watch this. But last night, I couldn't sleep and got bored.

Going in with extremely low expectations, and not anticipating any gut jiggling laughs, I actually enjoyed it. The whodunnit actually worked. So did MM and her puppet PI co-star. And not expecting a Muppet movie, but a fusion of humans and puppet things worked. It reminded me of movies like iRobot and Bladerunner where society tries to blend humans and the so-called others, or socks, as they are sometimes referred. I'm glad I didn't see this before the last competition. I may not have written the same story.

I don't know if I can recommend this to anyone, but I found it bizarrely attention-holding, and with scenes like the gif above, tentacle sex at its worst/best???, it was fun to watch the creativity behind the box office flop.

I thought it was great.... I was amazed that it got such bad reviews.

Best movie of the year so far.

Joaquin will get an Oscar nom. It's still early though and the studios usually don't release their contenders until December.

I also just watch the Art of Self Defense with Jesse Eissenberg. It was a very original and quirky film. Dark comedy. Recommended.

When I found out this movie was coming out, I re-binged the entire Breaking Bad series. Some of the episodes I saw for the third time.

If not the best television show ever made, it has to be in the top five. And I've seen everything.

So to say that I was looking forward to this was an understatement.

I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed. It felt like another episode of Breaking Bad. It was good. But it didn't feel like a movie. In a way that's good.

I thought that it would be about Jesse like ten years in the future, but it's about the events immediately following the finale of BB. It didn't seemed tacked on or as something that was made simply for money. It was just giving the audience a look into Jesse's POV immediately following the BB finale. It was all well made and nothing was forced.

I do think that this would have better been served as a mini series.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
AD ASTRA with Brad Pitt & Tommy Lee Jones
Watched this ( El Camino ) on Netflix over the weekend. A satisfying conclusion to the other lead character on possibly the most entertaining television series of this century.

No 'real spoilers' contained in this review.

If you were a fan of Breaking Bad, you'll enjoy this 2 hour peek at whatever happened to Pinkman.

I just started The Terror Infamy. I waited until I could binge it all

One of the things I find interesting is that it is actually filmed in some of the locations that were actually used during the internment of Japanese in Vancouver. For example, the Hastings Park race track was used to collect Japanese before being transported inland. They filmed the same scene in the show (although the show takes place in California).

I'm not finding it all that creepy even though I enjoy aspects of Japanese mythology. The historical stuff is done well, but the horror factor is lacking. It seems a bit over produced, kind of like the first season. Too much green screen. Feels like actors playing in front of a backdrop.

Still good though.
I recently rewatched Midsommar. I feel like it’s the best movie of the year but it won’t get recognized. Cinematography, art direction, and the lead actress Florence Pugh were excellent.

I actually think that it might get nominated for a few awards. I think the thing it has going against it is that if came out too soon. Most awards contenders come out in December.

I thought it was good. Like of like a Nordic Wicker Man, but better. I wasn't as good as Joker though. I love Florence Pugh... although I feel like she might have gone with a better stage name.

Joker had a very limited story/script that wouldn't have worked without calling the main character/movie joker. It really wouldn't have, take the exact same production and only change the name to jester... and no one would give a fuck... they'd rip it apart really. It would be a direct to video movie.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. I totally agree with your sentiments on the original.

I had not planned on watching this iteration of yet another Batman related movie, until I read this article.

Thanks for the heads up. I've not spoken with anyone who's seen this. I'll give it a go soon.
Currently watching Magnolia (it's been a long time since I saw it, but I remember enjoying it. At three hours, I won't watch it in one viewing.)

Just started watching, Key Largo, with Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson (perfect look for gangster guy) and Lionel Barrymore (grumpy fuck from It's A Wonderful Life and Drew's grandpappy.) So far, I'm actually enjoying the movie and especially Bogie. Don't care much for the constant 'Indian' stuff, but it was a different time, different place. Will finish watching the movie during dinner. Good movie. Overacting classes were a must.

Recorded Glass. I want to like it, but I fear I won't given the numerous bad reviews. I guess I'll see...

I disagree. I think if it wasn't named Joker, critics would have loved it but it wouldn't have done as well at the box office.

It drew similar parallels to "You Were Never Really Here."

A great movie that didn't get a lot of press.

I kind of wish they didn't make it a Joker movie. It think it touched on social issues that were overshadowed by the whole Batman thing.

I'm watching Watchmen from 2009.

I've seen it numerous times but since the new TV series came out I went back and read the graphic novel. I realize that fans of the comic will never be satisfied but I think this is a pretty good representation of the original.

It probably would have been better as a mini series but back in 2009 mini series weren't really a thing at least in the mains stream market.

It really is great. And I suggest anyone watch the digital comic made a few years ago.

People have claimed that the 1986 comic is when "comics grew up." I agree. It covers topics that are still relevant today.

Plus Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre....

Those bangs are terrible.... but that costume is pretty nice....
I'm so sick of all the Marvel crap. There are so few really good new movies. Some good ones, but lesser known, I've heard about from posters here. Thanks for that! I've started watching some of the classics, as they might be called. Apart from the dated feel most of them have, I've really enjoyed them.

I'm bouncing between Bogart and Hitchcock movies right now.

Recently watched Key Largo and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I really liked the first, tolerated the second. Back then, overacting was definitely a prerequisite for Hollywood.

The Big Sleep I really enjoyed. It was a double bill on Turner Classic Movies, paired with Chinatown with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Again, both are dated, but both are really excellent movies. Always loved Faye Dunaway since the first time I saw, Bonnie and Clyde. Interestingly, Ed Norton was guest hosting the double bill and talked a lot about noir and neo-noir, which Chinatown is. I love both genres. Dude was interesting, informative, and insightful. He acted in and directed Motherless Brooklyn, a throwback to these old timey flicks. I'll see it soon, because of him. Much respect.

Watched Hitchcock's, Psycho, and Shaun of the Dead, prior to Halloween. Psycho is like two movies in one. Those that have seen it, will know another chapter starts after the shower scene. Norman Bates. What a fucking freak. The actor was pretty darn good. Good stuff, Mr. Hitchcock. I love Shaun of the Dead, and pretty much anything Simon Pegg is in. But after further review, I prefer Zombieland. Zombieland: Double Tap, although not getting great reviews, is a movie I'll be seeing soon.

I've just started watching another Hitchcock flick, North by Northwest. So far, as expected, I don't like Cary Grant. I prefer The Flintstone's version of him, Cary Granite. But I've never seen the movie, and it's always a recommended viewing of Hitchcock's, so I'll do it.

In the PVR queue, Casablanca (haven't seen it in years) and The Maltese Falcon (same). Really looking forward to both of those.
Last Christmas. yeah, it's a rom-com. i don't normally do rom-coms, but my wife loves them, and it stars Emilia Mother of Dragons Clarke, so... it's fairly typical, with a bit of a twist, a bit dark at times, but well done, and Emilia is delightful, as she is in everything she does, so really, if you like HER it's worth watching just for that. sadly, she's not naked in it, not once, so i had to use my imagination a lot... also, i got shushed once or twice when i started chanting 'burn them, burn them all' under my breath...

Jojo Rabbit is, actually, probably the best movie of the year. certainly the best one i've seen. a must see, imo, and worth repeated viewings. can't comment on midsommar, having not seen it, but Ms Pugh was delightful in Fighting With My Family, so i'd like to catch it on the small screen at some point.
