Has anyone seen this? Makes me cry every time (throughout the film.)

Anyway, point is, how does the dog know it's the other twin? Or was that just for the movie? I've always wondered.

Any theories?

They have different smells, so the dog could tell the difference smile Every human being (even identical twins) has their own scent, fingerprint and iris pattern. Everyone really is unique :)

I know because I'm a twin, and my ex was a vet and this came up once :)
My guess is it's a survival instinct. Dogs descend from wolves, who are pack animals.

Dogs, sharing the nature of their ancestors, are also pack animals. They form strong bonds, and they have to know who one of their own is. Their heightened senses (hearing, smell, etc.) help with this.

Identical twins look the same, but they may not smell the same (especially if they didn't grow up in the same environment, like the twins in The Parent Trap), and the dog was able to sense that something wasn't right.

You blew one of my arguments out the water, cos I though identical twins would have the same scent. If not, that's it cos dogs have amazing sense of smell.

Some interesting points. It probably comes down to the scent and the pack thing is an interesting analysis x

Identical twins don't look 100% the same as there are always very subtle differences. One might be heavier or slightly taller, etc. But dogs with their extremely heightened sense of smell would easily be able to pick out the most subtle differences. Besides dogs smell and hear much better than they see. In fact, your dog might not recognize you from 100' feet away, but would most likely smell you and even recognize the sound cadence of your walk. Therefore he/she is already wagging their tail in anticipation.
