There goes a piece of my childhood - RIP Adam West

One of my favorite shows as a kid, and still one I come back around to from time to time as an adult, was the 1966-68 Batman starring Adam West as the titular hero and Burt Ward as archetypal superhero sidekick Robin, The Boy Wonder. While I was too young to see the original run (I was a toddler when it started), it was in regular syndication in the 70s when I was growing up and I watched it regularly, as well as seeing the feature film version from 1966 a few times.

Sure it was campy to the point of silliness, but it still offered a vision of Batman that I find appealing in some ways - less Dark Knight seeking vengeance for his parents' murders, more Caped Crusader fighting crime. And what criminals. Franks Gorshin's Riddler, Burgess Meredith's Penguin, and the three Catwoman portrayals (Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt in the series and Lee Meriweather in the film) still rank among my favorite Bat-villains.

Not to diss modern incarnations (I do like the Tim Burton and Chris Nolan versions), but it does offer a nice counterpoint to those darker visions. So losing Adam West, even at the ripe old age of 88, is a sad moment. The TV stars I followed as a kid are mostly my parents' generation so I know I'll be seeing more of them off over the next decade or two.
♥♥♥ saddened and shocked. My one and only Batman. Would watch reruns w/ a certain friend. R.I.P. Batman-Adam West.
"Batman", with Adam West, was the first movie I ever saw in the cinema, though it must have been at least 12 years after its release.

You know...some days you just can't get rid of a bomb! Rest in Peace, Adam West.
For generations our ancestors fought proudly as warriors against the Jedi. Reclaim our armored past for an unending future.
Even I watched him in this! Loved him with Catwoman. And more recently, his part in Big Bang. Top guy. RIP.
Like many cities, Corpus Christi had a teen music TV show. Each episode ended with a dance contest. I was 14 when I won dancing to this song.
I remember watching Adam West's Batman religiously as a child - BBC2, 6.30pm every weekday.

So what if it was cornier than a field of the Green Giant's finest, and camper than a field of Scouts?

So what if Gotham City is supposed to be a gritty, grimy, East Coast metropolis, and ABC's version was so clearly sunny, hippy Los Angeles?

So what if those mysterious poles in the library never explained how the dynamic duo slid down as Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, and emerged mere seconds later fully dressed as Batman and Robin? (Although having now seen Wallace & Gromit, I understand better the intricacies involved in getting dressed mechanically - and on a tangent, RIP Peter Sallis.)

I didn't care. I know he did other things in his long and illustrious career - not least, playing my favorite supporting character, Mayor West, in Family Guy. But to me, Adam West was, and always will be, Batman; and I would have paid huge money to see him reprise the role for Nolan's trilogy. (Same suit and all - I mean, can you imagine him facing off against Tom Hardy's Bane? That would have been frigging awesome!)

RIP Mr West, you absolute legend. You will be sadly missed in the Chesh household.
