It's something we looked at in the past ella, but at the time we decided there weren't enough active members on at any one time, and there's nothing worse than an empty chatroom.

So about how many do you think is enough? Just 'cause at any given time when I look, there are 800 or so people on the site and around 20 logged in. And I bet more people would become members if there were a chat. Then again... that might end up making the site more of a cyber chat site than a place where people talk about their days and erotic stories.

Good question. There are 20 people in the stories section now, and 7 in here. There are often 40-50 people who are logged in on the stories side, that alone would make it worthwhile, providing enough of those wanted to actually chat.

It's going to have to be more or less unmoderated I think, other than regulars who know the rules.

There will just be the one room initially, however I can see we'll need different sections as it becomes more popular.

People around here are all pretty good. So I'm sure if you give a few general rules for people to bide by, it will work.
Other than that, a 'complain' button would always be good, if a user gets so many complaints that tata for you baby...
And you could think of moderators, just keep in mind time differences, so when appointing them make sure you set them from all over the globe!

Yes
There are normally different rooms for different purposes. I need to investigate the top chat rooms out there and see what obviously works the best.

Just FWIW, with my clumsy fingers, slow brain, and bad sight, I've seldom used chatrooms and then only with a lot of trouble.
That said, I've been in the Lush chat room three times in the last couple of days after folks contacted me. Hands down, the Lush chat feature is the easiest one I've ever used. 'Course my well-aged brain is still a tad too slow for effective chatting but it's nice to know I can with a minimum of cursing and banging on the keyboard.
