How many hours of focus groups, brainstorming, out-of-the-box thinking, and other corporate twattery do you think that cost them? Hmmmm?

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, if the total cost of the redesign, and rollout, will end up, at least 8 figures.

There have been some amusing rebranding failures over the years, here are a few (I'm not saying this one will be!).

My new story has been awarded the Recommended Read. If you adore a needy bottom and fancy a short, but very naughty read...
Love it. Beautifully simple.
I agree Annie.

I don't like it. I liked the first one better, however, I really don't care. It doesn't change my view on Google anymore or less than it did before.
I do like it better myself.

As in, if I picture myself in a setting where this company was newly created and I had to choose the font that appeals me the most, the newest version would have my vote: it's much more 'yummy' and it fits the playful colors way better.

I especially believe that their new 'G' logo improved for the better. It's a lot more fresh/modern and I like how they use Google's trademark colors in it:

It looks like Comic Sans with squared-off edges. Daft. I actually thought about starting a thread when I saw it, and you beat me to it!

I like the new single "G" on its own, as I never thought the previous one was any good, or fit with their previous full "Google" brand word. But the new typeface is actually quite pathetic. Still, if it means they spend more time with their crayons, and less time trying to tell me what crap they think I ought to be interested in seeing, I say they can re-brand every day.
Ut incepit fidelis, sic permanet.

It looks fine either way. I don't think I would have noticed it.

Giggles,

I think the old one has more personality. The new one is too uniform and just kinda there.
SyFy still pisses me off.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Google had a brand new typeface designed for their new logo, but it very closely resembles other typefonts already in use. I give it low marks for creativity and originality. It's very bland. Take away the colors and it looks like the logo for a department store.

lol. They'd be owned by NBC, and nothing to do with google.

Or were you talking about a rebranded logo of theirs?
I can't see what was wrong with the original one

I never even noticed it and only found out about it when I watched Sky News!

If I was their FD I would be having some serious conversations with their marketing team!

it doesn't really matter to me, but i must admit that i'm fond of the style of the old font.

Say. Her. Name.

the rebrand - it's sci fi, not syfy. it's just stoopid now. (not stupid).

Okay, I feel like being argumentative here, haha...

First of all, the only reason that the old logo has any kind of 'personality' is because it's been around for so long. It's actually a pretty ugly/uninspired font that stuck since the very beginnings of Google and that they desperately tried to improve over the years:

That sort of 'Times New Roman' font is just so dated and completely unfitting in the scope of a modern digital environment. I mean, I've even been advised not to use dated fonts like Times New Roman or Courier News when making a resume: they're among the worst fonts you could possibly use to convey an up-to-date and professional image. And considering that the main task of a search-engine is to keep up with what's new and interesting, it's also one of the least appropriate fonts that Google could possibly use for their logo.

Seriously, you almost never see that kind of font anymore in digital environments (eg. websites, smart-phones, softwares, etc.). Just look at the font that Google use themselves to show their search results:

If you compare, the new logo is quite a lot more representative of what appears in their search-engine than the old one was:

Anyway that's just my opinion, but I actually think that the new logo does a much better job at representing what Google is: it's neutral/universal, it's current, it's a lot more digital-like, and the fun colors still add a nice easygoing vibe. The old font makes me think of an old-fashioned bookstore more than anything.

A lot of people are simply reluctant to change, I guess. Give it a month and the new logo will have the exact same status/personality that the old one currently has.

Not for body text perhaps, but for headers serif fonts still work, especially when contrasted with sans serif fonts in my opinion. BTW, in print serif fonts are still used a lot for body text.

I understand what you mean, and I'm not a big fan of most serif fonts myself, but a logo is just something completely different that search results. Different function, different rules. A true font fetishist might even point out that the fact that the fonts are closer related, but still quite different, make them look more out of tune than when there's much more contrast between them.

To me, at first sight, the blue seems a tiny bit to bright for a good balance. Other than that I don't really have an opinion about it. It doesn't make me happy, sad or mad. I kinda like the fact that they stick to the Lego reference though.

===  Not ALL LIVES MATTER until BLACK LIVES MATTER  ===

You know, when u look at the logo at the top of a tab when working in the browser, when all u can see a "G" appearing with all the multitude of colors, personally it felt like that tab was hosting a B-grade Indian, useless site with no sense of creativity. Honestly, I liked the previous one. But then again its just me.

While I could honestly care less as I still use them a lot... the new rainbow G makes me think they are celebrating Gay Pride. I think my main issue is they simplified the font so it was easier for stupid people to read.

Whatever. They make billions of dollars a year. Obviously someone had way too much time on their hands & money to waste.
This font is much clearer.

I can!

I like the new one - I cannot - absolutely cannot - stand any font with serifs. UGH! Thats from the days of trying to make fonts attractive by adding thrills rather than letting the simplicity of the letters speak for themselves.
No, I hate the colors. It needs a complete overhaul. As a person who can make graphic stuff such as wallpapers, they wasted their time and money.

I think the font is not for everyone.
