How do people get to have cool rank names like "her royal spriteness" and "sweetest cricket"? Is it a honor magically bestowed to us by the Mods after we've been here awhile and deemed worthy? Or is it in part of the settings which I've overlooked?

Some are born with ranks, some achieve ranks, and some have ranks thrust upon them.

In all seriousness to your question, once you've been around and gotten your name out there a bit, you can ask for a rank name and if you are nice about it you might get it. I got mine from Nicola once I had posted in the forums a bunch and my name was pretty familiar around Lushdome. Just give it time and you'll soon be well known enough you can ask.
