How do I add an image to the top of a story?

I've read the "guidelines to posting an image" thread elsewhere, but the technical details are lacking.

The drafts mode has a toolbar with an image function. It asks for the URL. Does that mean I can use an image from my own computer files?

How do I size it? I would think that the image defaults to the width of the story column. And what do HSpace and VSpace mean? I assume that refers to horizontal and vertical space.

Also, I don't want to add any text.

Thank you!
I've only ever done it from the submission page... not sure about H&V space...
On the submission page just before adding the body text you have the option to add a cover image.

Cover Image
Remove Image <- does what it says, from.
Then I have a line of all the pictures I have in my gallery and folders. <- click on a picture and you get a blue outline this indicates it has been selected.
Add an image from your gallery as a cover <- clicking on the link takes you to your image upload page.

Hide title and author from cover image? <- check this if you don't want the automatic overlay (Usually I would say, if you have the info on the picture you've uploaded). Is this what you meant by you don't want to add text?

Automatic overlay (box UNchecked)

NO automatic overlay (box checked)

Yes what Kite said! In settings, upload a picture to images. When you are in Lush editor you will see uploaded images to choose from. Highlight one you want. You wont see it atop story until you hit "continue" and get to the preview story page.

Kindness is contagious. Spread it! ❤️

Thanks. Well, I don't have the text in the submissions window yet. I do have the image in the image gallery. I didn't resize it to refit my profile because it isn't going there. Yeah, I do see the images available. By the way, what does H&V space mean?

Okay, so when I do hit the Submit Story button, I put the image in first? (The whole thing will be in drafts for a while.) Offhand, I don't see "continue." Do you mean I have to upload the image again when I have the submission window open and I'm filling in the various fields?

By the way, the image I used for my avatar a long time ago is no longer in the gallery. I assume that when it is used once, it is no longer there for any future use.
I think you may be trying to do it the wrong way. Don't use the toolbar thing that asks for a URL. Just use the Cover Image thing that shows you all the images in your gallery and click on the one you want.
Then you can choose whether or not you want the title and your name written in over the image. You do not have to upload the image again.

Then click the Continue button (come on, it's a big blue button at the bottom of the page!) and you get a preview of your story with the image so you can check if it all looks okay, and click save story or edit draft.

If you have not uploaded your cover image to your gallery or folder, do that first. I would let it resize it, if for no other reason than to help keep the load down on the servers.
On the story submission page:
1 - Select your category
1a - if a competition is running you'll have the option to check that box to enter.
2 - add title and tags
3 - one liner and author notes.
4 - check if it's an audio story
Then you come to the Cover Image.

1) Scroll through the pictures you have already uploaded and select the one you want by clicking on it.

Once selected it will have a blue border around it.
The default is to have the "Hide title and author from cover image?" box UNchecked.

2) Once you have entered your story and added any other info (series title, back link, note to mods, etc), scroll to the bottom of the submission page.
Click "Continue"

3) This will take you to the preview page. Note on this one the "Hide title and author from cover image?" box was unchecked, so there is the automatic overlay of the 'Title by Author' in this case "test by Kiteares"

4) If you do NOT want the overlay
At the first step check the "Hide title and author from cover image?" box.

Note the selected picture remains bordered in blue.

5) With box check there will be no overlay on your cover image.

6) Once you are happy with the story, Publish Story in the usual way and wait for approval.
Don't overthink it, follow the submissions page down adding info as required or wanted and if you're not happy with what you see when you 'Continue' go back and try again; even save as draft, delete and start from scratch.

If you upload an image to your gallery and then use it as an avatar, it will remain in your gallery.
If you upload an image direct to the avatar page it won't appear in your gallery.

Okay, that continue button. But it's not blue, it's got black letters on a white/gray background. I haven't actually done anything yet except write the story.

Thanks, I think with all of the info below I should be able to do this; probably by tomorrow.
Thank you kiteares, that seems to be working very well. I appreciate your help.
