I've written a story that is a sequel to a previous story. But I can't see how to link to the previous one. I tried bbcode nut that doesn't work.
It must be possible because some recent stories for example 'Spying on Samantha and Hallie" have links at the top back to previous stories. But I can't see how to do it in the story submission process.
Thank you, fellow furry animal. I saw that but wasn't sure if it was the right thing. It says at the footer, but the stories I was looking at had the link at the top. Anyway, I'll try it.
Sorry to bump this slightly old thread, but it seemed excessive to start a new one when this issue is related: I've noticed some odd behaviour with this feature in some series I've been reading, and I think I've worked out why. I don't think this is quite a bug, more a limitation of the application that runs the site, so not sure if anything can be done about it, and even if it can, whether it would be worth the effort if no one else has noticed it, but worth being aware of if you do a lot of story linking.
(This ended up a bit wordy, I've italicised and underlined to make things clearer, hopefully)
Anyway, here's what I think happens, tell me if I'm wrong: when you use the Link This Story feature when posting a story, it updates the database entry of the new story with the current URL of the story you are linking to for the Read again link, and the entry for that other story's Continue reading link with the current URL of the story being edited.
All well and good, except if after posting a multipart series and linking the stories together, you post another story, not in the series. You want to link it to the previous series because some readers (like me) use those continue reading/read again links to keep reading an author we like, even if the stories aren't connected. However, you don't want to link to the last chapter, because starting with the last chapter of a series rarely makes sense, so you link to the first chapter. Result: the Continue reading link in chapter 1 now goes to the new story, not chapter 2; and the last chapter doesn't have a continue reading link.
A work around I can see would be:
1. Link the new story to the final chapter, wait for it to be approved, so the Continue reading link on the last chapter is as desired
2. Edit the new story, this time linking to chapter 1, wait for edit to be approved, so the Read again link on the new story is as desired, but the Continue reading link on chapter 1 will no longer be to chapter 2
3. Edit chapter 2, not actually making any changes but keeping the existing link to chapter 1, thereby hopefully resetting the Continue reading link on chapter 1 to chapter 2.
Obviously, that's not ideal for the author or the mods. Presumably an author could ask mods to make those changes in the notes so they all happen at once rather than flooding the mod queue?
The only other solution I can think of would be to have separate link options with each story, one for the Read again and one for the Continue reading, with a checkbox for whether to make the links reciprocal. In that case you would leave the boxes checked for all the series stories, then uncheck it when posting the new story, and only have to edit the final chapter to change the Continue reading link (also unchecking reciprocate). I don't know if that is possible, desirable or worth the time to do for how many authors it affects.
