Thats correct. Members can always raise a support ticket to establish their subscription details, e.g. expiration date, and indeed many do. We can also facilitate the upgrade from gold to platinum via the support desk.

So members do not (currently) receive any form of notification that their paid membership is due to expire. Furthermore (currently) you cannot establish when your paid membership will expire. When it does expire, for gold/platinum members, the gold vertical upgrade bar will appear on your profile page, and other page, soon after.
For silver members that gold vertical upgrade bar will always be apparent. The non-notification of expiry date also applied.

I have sent you a PM with your subscription expiration date. The option to purchase a silver subscription will not be available to you until your existing one expires.
I have been looking to see what the cost of the different subscription levels are and also what exactly you get for each of them. But don't seem to be able to find that info anywhere. Can anyone help ?

From your profile page click on the promotion for the platinum subscription and you will see the upgrade page which shows you the highlights for gold and platinum. In respect of the latter however please see this thread in addition:

Thanks John I didn’t spot the link down the side. What is the significance of somebody not renewing subscription ? Does it mean that they are unable to post new stories ? Or make comments on stories and forums and so on ? Or send PM’s ? Do their existing stories remain displayed on the site ?

In the order of your questions:
Free members can write, read and comment on stories
Free members have full access to the forums
Free members can only send 10 messages a day
If your paid membership lapses it doesnt affect your published stories
Free members do not get complimentary tea/coffee in the greetings hall
