More specifically, cities. And names.
Now, I can work with this to an extent, but when I have to change a characters name entirely, I get a little upset.
When I almost can't submit a story because of legitimate city names being marked wrong, I get a little peeved.
And when 'realise' is thrown back at me and I am offered the actually improper 'realize', I lol a bit, but I'm actually getting frustrated. Same thing with 'neighbour' and 'neighbor'; the 'u' actually does belong there....
All I'm saying is, I understand and appreciate the spell check function; it saved my ass on a couple that I did not catch. But wouldn't it be reasonable to have the site throw up the flag once, force a user to go through and check it to be sure that it is written properly, then perhaps allow it to submit anyways? I am sure there MUST be a way for the verifiers to check spelling on the stories they are reading so they can judge for themselves whether or not it is just the MS Word spell check screwing people over.
And, also, that Italicise button really hates my phone, or vice versa, because I could not get it to work with me to save my life.
Leaning towards it being my phone; considering turning it into the target I use to sight in my .270. Haven't decided yet.

This is in beta, implemented today as a trial.
Amazon do the same thing when you submit a story there for publication, they highlight "possible" errors, and ask if you'd like to change them / check, prior to publishing.
There are going to be issues we'll have to address.
People's names and place names will obviously be flagged. It would be good if we can pre-load the checking database with all the most popular male and female names, as well as all the cities / countries / towns.
We should load both the UK and US dictionaries if possible, so words like flavour spelled the US way, flavor, will not be flagged as incorrect.
The reason we're trialling it, is that we get a large number of stories submitted, where the author hasn't even read through it, hasn't spellchecked it, and it's a waste of our time double-handling them, when they shouldn't have been submitted in the first place.

Advice - write a story on a proper computer, not your phone. There's no possible way you can check it accurately on a small portable device.

Hi Jason, I'm not sure what kind of phone you are using, but Pages for the IPhone is cheap and highly effective. I use it as my primary writing software on my IPad.
For an android phone, you can try an app called Write that converts word docs. I hope that can help.

Just got my latest story blocked from posting because of the words, "mmm" and "ooh" and "clit". And there seems to be no way to get around taking all them out. A pain that I sure don't want to have on every story I try to post.
If I was to take out all the words that were marked wrong in my latest poem, I'd end up with word spaghetti! It seems like every other word is incorrect. I accept that it's in beta stages and has creases to work through, so I'm not going to moan. I'm screwed if that's how the system is going to handle stuff because I make up a lot of words and use a lot of colloquialisms.

There used to be a writer here who was insistent on banging out his stories on a 1930s manual typewriter, then he'd scan the pages at a Kinko's copy shop, and borrow one of their internet computers to transfer the .pdf to our attention.
And he bitched because nobody here would bother to transcribe them for him into the story submission window.

We could allow "established" authors, to add words to an "exceptions" dictionary, which grows over time.
The system would then flag fewer and fewer correctly spelled words, the more it's used.

I notice, when writing either in a word doc or even email, my spell check says my spelling is incorrect. We Aussies spell correctly, although American English seems to be corrupt

Actually, I found an app called Ginger that does spelling and grammar check. Gonna try that out and see how it works.

We are seeing if we can run stories through both the UK and US spellchecking routines, that way there's more flexibility. It's being worked on.

According to academics American English is more archaic than the UK version even some of the meanings are historically different like ''mad'' meaning angry which I first noted in an Elvis song The Girl of My Best Friend. The US version is closer to Elizabethan than current UK. However I feel the US's strength is in colourful (colorful)

No we use that saying in the same way but we used just ''pissed'' to mean drunk not angry. We're on the piss (drinking), I'm pissed off with him (I'm angry with him).

The shifts in spelling and/or meaning are just proof that Englsh, unlike Latin for example, is a "living language". I did notice, though, the spellcheck warning thingamajiggy didn't like contractions. It clipped every contraction at the apostrophe, and told me I had spelling errors such as "wern", "wasn" and "aren". It wasn't (see what I did there?)

We are using both a UK and a US dictionary for the checking, and Gav is working on an import and stemming tool, so we can add custom word lists to.
I've found a few slang word lists, and we already have a database of common sex related terms, so it's all happening.
Hopefully this cuts out significantly, the amount of stories submitted where the author hasn't bothered to spellcheck their story at all, and save us a lot of unnecessary admin time.
