You know, I am open to new things and I had a play around with the transparency feature, but it seemed to take forever for my page to load (perhaps because I have a gif as my background)

Anyway, I changed it back to normal (whatever that is)

(I do want to point out that I think it's a fun feature, but just not for me)

Using transparency in web design isn't a bad thing in itself it's just tricky to use well. Unless you have full control of the background image CSS you will never be in the same place on different size screens. So if you're looking at your profile and it looks great with that background image behind your text laden transparent layer you might be in for a shock when you switch devices.

It is nice to give people the chance to be creative. However, if you give kids crayons, you'll need to redecorate your house pretty quickly.

I love this new feature, but do think it is hard to read the blue font in recent activity. Maybe I just need a darker background?

I love the analogy.

You realise myspace was bought for $580m back in the day? I'd be happy with $5.8m, if anyone wants to buy my baby? ($1m+ offers considered)

Justin Timberlake is now trying to bring it back.
I think that's a bit like

Is it possible to return the site to even 1/3 its former glory? It's such a great domain though. He's got an awkward issue to deal with, in that they have such a monster membership, but the site needs a total design / focus overhaul.

Good luck JT!

I still don't like this transparency

the blue font is difficult to see .... and pics on the pics background looks horrible.

I'm sticking with the boring white .... but at least it doesn't look like a dog's breakfast.

btw ..... thanks OTKN .... you are right .... totally MySpace
I am not liking the transparency. As has been said before the blue font is very difficult to read ...the transparency seems to make profiles far too busy.
I prefer my boring white smile

I'm no fan of backgrounds it makes in most cases impossible for a lot of people to read. Now if I can get technical/legal side of things, we are breaking the following rules by making fancy backgrounds.

In the USA:
You have Section 508

The Rest of the World"
W3C, WCAG 2.0 criteria 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum): The visual presentation of text and images of text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1

THIS.

OMKN, it does take tweaking on the part of the profile owner (a lot of tweaking).

I'm finding your statement to be correct. The simpler the background, the easier it is to read profiles with transparency. Busy detailed backgrounds and gifs really DON'T work, and they do leave you with the myspace-effect.

I think the tweak-able options aren't really helping.

The stretch image option may make it look a bit neater than just having the image tiled but if the end viewer has a high res screen then your 500px background might be stretched to 2000px or more - 16 times bigger - making it muddy and horribly undersampled (not a pretty sight)

A better option, in my opinion, would be to center (sic) the image allowing you to put a tailor-made background that would match the column widths on almost all visual browsers. Still not a great thing though to have imagery behind text.

Ah, I hear you.
Actually...

I've just changed my background and set the transparency to 10% (thanks wmm) and it looks great and seems to be loading just fine.
I take it all back. I think my page looks really good smile

No it doesn't!! lol only joking

I think its a nice add on, well done Gav.
It's always nice to have more options so you can personalize your profile, but the "Transparent" ones I have seen so far have been so hard to read. Guess I'll stay old school and boring.

Boring is definitely not a word I would associate with you girl!!
Is it possible to change the story title color from black to maybe white when selecting the dark transparency? Titles get lost in the darkness with the current setting.

I really dislike it.

it's so difficult to read profiles that have multi-coloured pics with the transparency. Then, the friend list .....

it's quite ugly in most cases ....

well, that will stop me from checking out profiles!!

Oh, the horror, as OMW said.
I can respect given creativity to Lushies, but it looks just bad and tasteless. Haven't seen one nice profile with transparency so far.

It totally looks like a turd sandwich, she.
I think anything more than a 20% background is going to be very hard to read. If you go darker, just go all the way and use the reverse type. Reverse is definitely harder to read for me personally.
