You know, I am open to new things and I had a play around with the transparency feature, but it seemed to take forever for my page to load (perhaps because I have a gif as my background)
Anyway, I changed it back to normal (whatever that is)![]()
(I do want to point out that I think it's a fun feature, but just not for me)

It is nice to give people the chance to be creative. However, if you give kids crayons, you'll need to redecorate your house pretty quickly.

I love this new feature, but do think it is hard to read the blue font in recent activity. Maybe I just need a darker background?

maybe you just need a plain background...

I'm no fan of backgrounds it makes in most cases impossible for a lot of people to read. Now if I can get technical/legal side of things, we are breaking the following rules by making fancy backgrounds.
In the USA:
You have Section 508
The Rest of the World"
W3C, WCAG 2.0 criteria 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum): The visual presentation of text and images of text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1

THIS.
OMKN, it does take tweaking on the part of the profile owner (a lot of tweaking).
I'm finding your statement to be correct. The simpler the background, the easier it is to read profiles with transparency. Busy detailed backgrounds and gifs really DON'T work, and they do leave you with the myspace-effect.

I think the tweak-able options aren't really helping.
The stretch image option may make it look a bit neater than just having the image tiled but if the end viewer has a high res screen then your 500px background might be stretched to 2000px or more - 16 times bigger - making it muddy and horribly undersampled (not a pretty sight)
A better option, in my opinion, would be to center (sic) the image allowing you to put a tailor-made background that would match the column widths on almost all visual browsers. Still not a great thing though to have imagery behind text.

Actually...
I've just changed my background and set the transparency to 10% (thanks wmm) and it looks great and seems to be loading just fine.
I take it all back. I think my page looks really good
