Review: Dr. Joel Kaplan Power Probe

First and foremost, I have an important announcement to make regarding this toy: although it is marketed as a prostate massager (and I bought it for this very purpose myself), I ended up using it a lot more on my girlfriend than on myself. Women, before disregarding this review by thinking that it is only addressed to men, please know that there's definitely something in there for you too!

Since around a year ago, I've been intrigued more and more by p-spot orgasms. I only rarely indulged in ass-play before, but reading about the mind-blowing experiences of some men on Lush regarding the alleged intensity of p-spot orgasms, I figured that I had to experience this for myself. I mostly tried to massage my prostate with my fingers under the shower a few times, but alas the results were very disappointing: I just couldn't achieve any pleasurable sensation that way.

As I was finalizing yet another order of various fun couples' toys, I thought that adding a prostate massager would be a good idea to finally stimulate my prostate as intensely as I could. My girlfriend proposed me to use one of her former g-spot toy prior (the First Time G-Spot Tulip, to be exact), but although I was finally disposed to insert objects inside my ass, the idea of inserting a pretty lavender toy in there just didn't feel right to me. "Stay outside of this," I told my girlfriend, "I need a manly toy to stimulate my manly ass".

The massager that I finally purchased is the Dr. Joel Kaplan Power Probe. Honestly, I really don't give much of a fuck who Dr. Joel Kaplan is, but this is essentially a line manufactured by California Exotic Novelties and marketed as vibrators for men. The collection is quite varied however, with most of the vibrators being in the $20-50 price range:

Being an anal-novice myself, I really didn't have precise criteria in mind when I ordered my massager. I chose the one I ordered quite randomly I must say: it simply seemed like a right choice to me. I did wanted something that vibrated though, to stimulate my prostate as intensely as I possibly could. I only paid around $15 for that toy and received it a few days later by mail.

My personal review is going to be extremely short: prostate stimulation really doesn't do much for me. I tried using this vibrator a few times, either all alone by myself or with the help of my girlfriend, but I just couldn't achieve significant results. By the way, I also tried using the new vibrator of my girlfriend in the last few months (the G-Kii by Je Joue), and the results were just as weak. I really don't seem to be advantaged for p-spot orgasms, just like a few women aren't advantaged for g-spot orgasms either. This is not to say that this toy is completely inadequate to stimulate the prostate: it might be very useful for some other men, but it just happens that p-spot stimulation really doesn't do much for me.

I’m obliviously not the best reviewer when it comes to prostate massagers, but I can still point out some flaws in the design of this toy. First, it's much too short: when inserted inside your ass only 1-2" will stick out, which can make it difficult to manipulate it or to provoke a vigorous movement on your prostate. Second, it doesn't have a proper curve, which isn't ideal to easily reach the prostate. Third, the tip is very narrow which again can make it difficult to locate your prostate adequately: I'd much recommend a large bulbous head for that.

Anyway, it's still possible that some men will be able to experience very pleasurable sensations with it, but it just doesn't seem ideal to me. As I mentioned previously however, I also tried my girlfriend's G-Kii in the past few months: the design is theoretically perfect to stimulate the prostate, but even that toy didn't produce any significant results for me:

Now to my great surprise, this vibrator happened to be an excessively fun toy to use with my girlfriend. I washed it thoroughly after my prostate experimentations, and decided to test how it delivered as a couples' toy. First and foremost, let me properly introduce the specifications of this toy:

Length: 6"
Insertable Length: 4.5"
Girth: 3.7" at largest point
Width: 1.1" at largest point
Material: Silicone
Battery: 1 x AA Battery
Special Features: Fully waterproof, 2 Speeds
Retail price: $15-20

As you can observe, it's basically a medium-sized vibrator (6" long). It's entirely covered with silicone as well, which is quite rare for a toy of this price ($15-20). It's also fully waterproof (tested by yours truly) and has two different speeds. Here's what it looks like in my hand, and compared to a Pocket-Rocket:

I’m comparing it to the Pocket-Rocket because it has the exact same power input (1 x AA Battery) and also has a much similar design. It's significantly bigger than a Pocket-Rocket, but it's essentially a Pocket-Rocket covered with silicone, with very similar levels of vibration/noise. My girlfriend has always been partial to Pocket-Rockets when it comes to clitoral stimulation, so that new vibrator inevitably became a fun alternative toy to use for her.

As I said the vibrations and the noise produced by this vibrator are similar to the Pocket-Rocket. However, because it is fully covered with silicone they're also both quite a bit different: the vibrations are a bit attenuated and the noise is a bit muffled. Not by a considerable margin regarding to the vibrations, but enough to provide a different sensation: whereas the hard plastic of the Pocket-Rocket tends to produce vibrations that are buzzy and easily discernable, the silicone of the Power Probe tends to produce vibrations that are a little deeper and fuzzier. It's a subtle difference, and my girlfriend enjoys both pretty much equally, but it still adds a bit of variety if you're into those small clitoral vibrators.

In terms of noise, the silicone coating makes it pretty quiet, but there's a certain shortcoming: sometimes the silicone seems to vibrate against the inner part of the vibrator, which can make it rather loud and annoying. This mostly happens in very specific positions when you're holding the vibrator in the air however; when you're applying some pressure on it to stimulate different erogenous zones, it almost never happens and it's relatively quiet.

As I also mentioned previously, this vibrator also has two different speeds available: high and low. To turn it on or to change the speed, you only have to press on the button located at the tip of the handle. Most women will likely use this vibrator on the higher setting, but the lower setting can also be nice if you ever need to use it more discreetly (if you have roommates or children, for example).

Where this small toy really shines is how its shape can be so versatile to stimulate the female genitalia. I wasn't all that enthusiastic about it when I first decided to test it with my girlfriend, but as we kept playing with it I really thought to myself: "Wow, that little thing is quite handy in so many situations!". It can be used either externally or internally to stimulate the clitoris or the g-spot, the head is perfect for both precise or broad stimulation, and it's very easy to use during either solo-play, cunnilingus or regular intercourse.

As a clitoral stimulator, the shape is ideal for both pinpoint and broad stimulation. This is particularly interesting if you're the kind of woman who doesn't really prefer one over the other and who likes to easily alternate between the two:

During cunnilingus with a partner, it's also very useful to stimulate the g-spot. I personally abhor using large toys when performing oral sex on a girl (8" and over): they tend to get in the way quite significantly and it's much harder to locate the g-spot with them. For those who are familiar with Lelo toys, this vibrator is similar in size to the Lelo Gigi, as pictured below:

As you can observe above, whereas the Lelo Gigi has a metal ring to distinguish the part that's meant to be used internally, the Power Probe has a narrower section around the same location. This is extremely useful when another person is stimulating your g-spot, for one main reason: it's possible to memorize how deep the toy must be inserted to be perfectly aligned on the g-spot. When I'm using it on my girlfriend, I know exactly how close or how far the tip of the toy is from her g-spot, simply by observing the position of the 'narrower section' relatively to the opening of her pussy: in her own case, I'll be right on her g-spot when the middle of that 'narrower section' will be perfectly aligned with the opening of her pussy. This is almost impossible to achieve with a longer toy that's perfectly straight: in such a situation, I have to keep guessing until my partner tells me that it's on her g-spot.

As you can also expect, only 2" will be sticking out of your partner's vagina when stimulating her g-spot: this is ideal to perform oral sex at the same time, where a longer toy could definitely get in the way to lick her pussy adequately. Personally during cunnilingus, I also enjoy using smaller bullet vibrators (similar to the Sensuelle Wireless Bullet) to insert a few fingers inside my partner's pussy and to take a more proactive role, but a slightly bigger vibrator like the Power Probe is also a great option if you simply want to let it rest against her g-spot; that way, it's much easier to fully concentrate on the movement of your tongue.

As it is with clitoral stimulation, this toy can both be used for precise or broad stimulation when used on the g-spot:

The tip of the vibrator is somewhat flexible, so pressing it against the g-spot won't be as painful/uncomfortable as it might seem at first glance. As I'm demonstrating below, it's entirely possible to deform the silicone sleeve, so it really won't feel like a hard piece of plastic when inserted inside your vagina:

That tip is also about the size of a finger, so when used to stimulate your g-spot it will feel more or less like a fairly rigid finger that's titillating the upper wall of your vagina. I personally like to provoke a slight in-and-out motion when I’m using it that way, to playfully rub it against the g-spot of my girlfriend.

For a broader sensation, the opposite side of the curve can also be used on the g-spot: when used that way, it's possible to apply more pressure and it's also much easier to locate the g-spot, so this is an extremely viable option too. As compared to most regular vibrators, the curve also allows a much larger area to be stimulated, as represented below:

This vibrator is also extremely useful when used during proper penetration. As opposed to many other toys, it really won't get in the way when applied on the clitoris:

As you can see, the curved tip is ideal to stimulate the clitoris without interfering with the movements of your partner. Likewise, you won't have to hold it in place awkwardly for a lengthy period of time: you'll simply have to rest your hand comfortably on your hip-bone while both the dick of your partner and the hook of the vibrator will do wonders to your pussy.

Although this vibrator didn't do much for me in terms of prostate stimulation, I thought I'd share my bedroom experiences with it nonetheless because both my girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoy using it. We don't use it all the time, but its small size and its versatile shape makes it an ideal toy to carry around and to keep nearby during sex. It's obviously not a luxury toy, but for a price of less than $20 it's certainly well worth the money: it's made of silicone, it's neat and discreet, it's reliable, the vibrations are more than decent, and above all else it's incredibly versatile.

I highly recommend this vibrator, both for couples or for young girls on a budget who'd like to experiment with many different sensations!
