I do a lot of beta testing for various bits of google software. I would never think that it is my right to question their logos, buttons or reasons behind the software....I do it, because it is an honour to be asked and I appreciate the fact that they are trying to make peoples online experiences a little better.

What's the point of giving it to you then? When I hand stuff out to testers I want them to tell me how everything about it works for them - even at beta testing stage. And if there's something wrong with it for them - no matter what it is - they should tell me. It's then up to me to decide whether their concerns are valid or helpful. User experience is holistic, it's not just if a button does what it says it should.

They may contain traces of irony. If reading these opinions causes you to be become outraged or you start displaying the symptoms of outrage, stop reading them immediately. If symptoms persist, consult a psychiatrist.

It is never in the remit for the testing. They are interested in whether the product works, Not in whether or not it is aesthetically pleasing.

The same thing applies here. We are not being asked to comment on whether or not we like the symbol. The Lush admin and design team designed, coded and have voted to use it. Who are we to question them?

Who are we? We're the end users! Without end users there isn't any point to development.

If this how Google put stuff out for testing, no wonder they fail so spectacularly whenever they try to launch their own social networking tools

Of course we are and don't you think they/ she knows that? Don't disrespect them thinking they are ignorant. However, lushstories.com is Nicola's business and how she will aproach, analize and increase its growth and development it is her business. This is sex site, it is I believe a tad different to handle than grocery store, it is up to her how she wants her site to visually looks like, her rules. We got spoiled, she was asking us and giving us too much librety in the past about decisions she should make, and now we think we own this place just because we posted few poems. Please.

Currently there are 4655 active users on this site!

So far there has been in this thread around five or six people complaining. Would you change your software on the basis of a what a handful of users do not like, or would you look at the 4649 who have found no cause for complaint?

The economics are obvious.

The team here very obviously DO care, or they would not keep making improvements to what is a very well put together site.

Sometimes you have to just realise that some people do not like change. No matter what improvements you make, These people will still find fault.

Why would you dislike yourself for having an opinion on something?

My beef isn't with lush or its development. However we should feel free to comment on developments in the site as freely as we comment on the stories we provide for it. It's Nicola's choice to take those suggestions on board or dismiss them as she sees fit - much in the same way it's an authors choice to take any criticism on board to improve their writing.

I've already said I like the idea, but I'm also willing to accept that some people won't

What you're saying though is that we shouldn't even presume to debate the subject.

On the contrary. Debate is one of the healthiest pursuits of the mind.

What I am saying is that no thought has really gone in via this debate to the creators.

Somebody designed the mark, They were probably quite proud of it. It was then probably approved by some other people....Who lets face it, probably help run this site without getting any wages for doing so. Gav then had to spend some time coding, to allow the badge to be used. We are already talking probably over 12 man-hours worth of work. It just seems a little ungrateful to me that it is now being run down by a select few.

This site is a community but not a democracy. The site is Nicola's.....And long may she continue with it.

I see, so debate is a healthy pursuit of the mind but only as long as it doesn't include opinions. This isn't a democracy but 4649 votes for beats 6 against (or is that economics?)

I can't see this conversation going any further and I'm not going to stick to see which one of your statements you're going to contradict next.

I actually like the blue-check - it's clean and simple (and one of my fave shades of blue!). More importantly it also conveys a 'recommended read' to me without giving it the same level fanfare of a yellow ribbon. It shouldn't look on par with an EP award ribbon. It shouldn't be a medal or something too fancy that looks overtly similar to the EP, so for that reason I like the differential colour palette and simple design.

The red book icon is really cute but to be honest when it's up next to an EP ribbon it looks so similar it's hard to tell which one symbolizes the more important honour, especially to someone who is new to the site.

Just thought I'd throw my thoughts into the mix, as a person seeing them fresh. I wasn't involved in the original decision-making process but I was perfectly happy with the blue box when I saw it appear.

(notes to self all those who are rather vocal about not liking new award. If I am going to recommend something, I'd like it to go to someone who is proud of it, and one who will be as excited to receive it as I am to give it.)

Sadly, I thought that would be the case, and I will not leave that unanswered.

I have been vocal in both my dislike of a picture and my extreme happiness in my work even being thought it was worth it. I don't doubt that there is venting being done by folks about "jokingly" wanting to remove said awards. That's fine., do as you please.

But as I have said before, and I will say again, this is NOT personal, and it is NOT people saying the award is crap. People moan about the statues and trophy designs for big award events the world over. Why should Lush be any less important?! They can be grateful and pleased with the recognition, and still not like the marker for it.

Please, moderators, please try to see this from the angles in which this thread was made. It was not started on a mission to diss the moderator team/members, nor was it to belittle what we feel is a huge recognition. It was about something that aesthetically was not pleasing to some eyes.

If the Recommended Read award is given at the whim of whether somebody finds an author's forum posts regarding a colour/form/size of something ungracious or not, or removed because of it, then where does that leave us?

This is not personal or ungracious towards the award or the givers of it. I fully expect the symbol to remain in its design. I would expect nothing less. But it doesn't stop me having my opinion on it. Again, I am extremely grateful and still a bit unsure as to how I was so recognised. But because I gave a negative opinion on something I don't like the look of, should I now stop striving to better my writing?

Should I see the mods as people who give and judge by a person's posts and opinions, rather than their writing? Just as you judge us by our posts regarding a small blue badge, so authors judge mods by their posts regarding how awards are made. I am sad that the moderators feel under personal attack. That is NOT what this is.

I will get used to the blue tick, just as I knew I would have to. I had a vent. It's a blue tick; I didn't like the way it looked; I'll get over it.

But I will not get used to people thinking they are personally under attack and striking out because of it, when they are not. I will not get used to the fact I stated it was an honour to have the award. It isn't about the award. It's about a white tick on a blue box that nobody will think looks odd when it's been there a while.

You react as you wish, and I will sadly draw my own conclusions. This was NOT an "us and them" situation (at least for me). But it feels like it now. And it's a very sad day. I have known both sides of the fence, and this is horrible, because it was never about awards and how they are given (or not, as you have clearly implied). It's about a white tick on a blue box.

Ut incepit fidelis, sic permanet.

don't worry about it, Daisy. nothing like that is actually going to happen, and we do get it. that said, you have to admit that this is a little frustrating on our part. we found a way to honor some great stories and give some authors a thumbs up, so to speak, and it was greeted with a 'it's kind of ugly' response. we're only human and we have bad days too which will sometimes lead to someone rolling down the window and giving you the finger as they drive by. trust me, awards will never be handed out based on anything said or not said in this thread. a good story is a good story and that's all there is to it. smile

As far as I'm aware, no one has complained about the actual award itself, in fact, it's been said how proud people are to have received it.

Your post does make it seem that you as a mod will now be rather biased as to who does or does not receive said award from you, based on their forum posts rather than the merits of their writing. Which in my opinion cheapens the recommended read award altogether.

This seems like a rather sad day for lush and I echo the excellent and heartfelt points that Shylass made before me. What's the point in posting stories here if you as a person have a "black mark" against you?
I'm quite sure that NN was venting, as many people in this thread have done. It is rather daunting to give someone an award and then find out that they think it messes up their page or they want to hide it.

The award is about the writing and nothing else. Nobody has any black marks against them. If a story is read and the mod who reads it finds it to be exceptional, it will be given the award regardless of who wrote it. Like Sprite said, a good story is a good story, end of. If people don't want it, they can feel free to request that they not get it.
I think the reason so many feathers have been ruffled over this thread is that there was the suggestion from some members that they'd rather not have any symbol appear on their page than have the current one.

Now, many people have been very insistent that the opinions expressed in this thread are purely about the symbol and not about the award itself. However, when you're saying the symbol is SO bad that you'd rather people weren't able to see it as a Recommended Read, that, to me, shows that you think relatively little of the award.

One solution, if you really hate it being on your page SO much, is to hide that story or push it far enough down on your list (if possible) that it doesn't appear on your profile page. I doubt very much that any of you will do that as the RR will have been awarded to some of your best work, and you'll probably want to keep that on your page.

It's the strength of feeling expressed by some that has surprised me more than the general negative sentiment. Calm doon!

I hope that's true OWA.... I'd like to think so at least

I reiterate that as far as the thread goes, everyone has been pleased to receive their accolades, they were just unsure about the icon. That was all.

Now it seems that it's on individuals merits rather than the strength or quality of their writing?
To be honest, this thread is all about a check mark. Your opinion on a check mark isn't really going to be something taken into consideration of whether your story deserves a recommendation. Neither is your avatar or your sexual orientation or anything else that doesn't have to do with the substance of an amazing story.

As far as I am aware, Lush doesn't give pats on the back to prejudice. In any capacity. If you feel you've been wronged, you know where the Contact Us button is.
Just so there's no confusion, I'm still open to bribes.

not really very surprising seeing as one of the main criteria for picking moderators on Lush is because of their writing skills. i really hope you're not suggesting that my two RRs, out of a library of close to 100 stories and poems weren't earned or deserved?

Hmm. I counted 21 mod stories, 20 non-mod stories. Perhaps you can recheck?

EDIT: a new Recommended Read upped that to 21 non-mods.

There was probably a collective vote behind this and I don't want to go against that just giving my opinion but would it be possible to make it invisible on your profile page, to turn it off?

This does not sound like someone who is proud of her award.

As has been pointed out the word Hate is a very strong word. I(as a mod) certainly do not want to give out something that you(as the author) will "hate" and wish to hide.

The awards I have given out have been entirely based on the writing. I have given out ticks to both mods and non mods; who the recipient was/what their political/or lush stances were did not bear at all on the award.

The site already has a lot of red. I am not going to add any more. Grey / black doesn't stand out. The gold is reserved for EPs.

I like the blue, it's modern and fresh. We're playing around with ideas at the moment, stay tuned.

For those people who are complaining they don't like the look of it next to their stories, please send a message to Gav, and he will remove the award.
