We've had a member ask why we don't have "lesbian" as a sexual orientation choice.
Well, we have homosexual as a choice, which loosely means attraction between members of the same sex or gender.
If we added "Lesbian" as a choice, then the logical thing would be to remove "Homosexual" as a choice, and add "Gay" as well.
What is your preference?
At the moment we have:
Bisexual
Homosexual
Straight
Transexual
The alternative would be something like:
Bisexual
Gay
Lesbian
Straight
Transexual
Poll attached.
I think the new list is good, but if possible the addition of bi-curious could be an option as well.
I voted keep it as is. If you differentiate between male and female homosexuals, it won't be long before you need to do the same for the bisexuals. I think we can figure out that you are a lesbian if you are a female homosexual, or a gay male if you are a gay homosexual.
Me too, for the same reasons D_D.
The term "homosexual" is often used in a derogatory way, so I'm happy to do away with it.
"Male" is a little unnecessary isn't it? Gender is shown in the profile area anyway.
I prefer the new list with gay in place of gay male. I also like Lola's idea of adding bi-curious.
Done deal. Thanks for the feedback folks.
Jebru, how would you have the faintest idea about what lesbians would prefer to be called? Female homosexuals? Come on. It was a lesbian who requested the change in the first place.
Your recent know-it-all tone is wearing rather thin, and not just in this thread either.
Agree with Doll and nicola and like the new list!
Mr Martini, please stop being a smart alec.
What alternative would you have in there then?
yeah, everyone i know has always used either gay (m) or lesbian (f) homosexual is usually a derogatory term.
You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.
I agree with what is clearly the consensus: "gay" by itself is best. As for "homosexual," it clearly is old-fashioned and seems to drip with prejudice and condemnation. On the other hand, in certain fictional contexts that load of disapproval might be useful for its shock value, just as a term like "slut" can be used defiantly to show a character crossing a boundary and freeing herself from restriction by saying, essentially, "fuck convention."

And looking at the two pictures that Nicola posted sorta makes me wonder what sites she visits when she's not on Lush...hmmm....
