UK age verification bill for adult sites

If you're a UK member, you'll notice that from today, you will need to sign in to read stories. This is due to the new age verification bill for adult sites which goes live tomorrow.

Existing members won't have to re-verify, but new rules will be in place for people signing up.

If you can read this, you're already a member, lol, so this is just for info. There will be instructions for new people signing up to follow, to advise them how they can age verify.

Good that you have the infrastructure built. It is coming to other places, too. Our Conservative party talked about doing it here in Canada but with their current electoral track record, that could be a while. The Liberals seem less inclined to do it so far.

Not sure if this is related but when logged out I see (but can’t read) that there’s an ‘ fantasy’ story on the front page. When logged in, that’s not visible.

It's always like that. Hiding the category is an account preference, so can only operate if you're logged in.

I’m in Tennessee and they recently passed a law requiring age verification for video porn sites but apparently that doesn’t apply here. I’m not sure. Do you have any information on that?

I’m in Kentucky and noticed a change for me. When I’m not signed in the pics posted are blurred with 18+ on them and the avatars are blurred, too. However, I can read the stories.

Our governor passed a bill a while ago, making us give ID info to watch adult content.

Gak, the US system bugs me. At least if it ever happens here, it won't be province by province. The Internet is telecommunications so falls under federal jurisdiction here. Though Quebec often gets away with doing it's own thing so they might end up different from the rest of Canada (they even run their own income tax and pension systems).

Yeah, I'm honestly not sure. This site is UK based though, so that's why it's kicking in for us now. Not sure if ISPs are meant to limit who sees what in other places. How would any company keep a track of every law in every country or state that users access their content from 🤷🏼‍♀️

I know some sides of institute already cause when I go there, I have to enter in some kind of proof of age, but I don’t have that problem here with Lush so I’m not sure how it works

Report in the BBC:

Pornhub is the UK's most visited website for adult content and it experienced a 47% decrease in traffic between 24 July, one day before the new rules came into place, and 8 August, according to Similarweb's data.

Probably means a significant decline in the UK Lush readership now that one has to be logged in (and so age verified) to read stories.

Did / do ‘reads’ by non-members go towards the total readership number of stories? If so, the ‘famous story’ threshold may be harder to achieve, depending on the proportion of the readership that’s UK based.
