Why even have a scoring function for stories?

I'm curious as to why there is a scoring function related to the stories on this site? It appears that every story on this site is "Excellent" and worthy of a "5" as a score........maybe we should just go to "11". Is a high score of any tangible benefit to the author other than stroking their ego?

I find it interesting that on another site where authors post these same stories, most of them score between a "5" and a "7", but we're talking about a 10-point scale. To be nice about it, those scores would correspond to roughly "3"'s and "4"'s on this site.

The scoring on this site reminds me of when my kids played tee ball.........everybody is a winner just because they played and everybody gets a soda or ice cream, or both, after the game. Don't get me wrong, that's fine if you're 6 or 7 years old. I would just expect writers to be a little more adult where their stories are concerned.

people like getting votes. people like giving votes. taking that away could result in less submissions, and this is, primarily a story driven site. is the voting system a little broken? sure, but i've seen sites that go the opposite way, low scores, abusive comments, that tend to drive authors away, so, this is how we roll smile

I dare you to post that weak ass comeback on another site. It would get thumbed down faster than you can delete your account out of embarrassment.

I almost never get all 5s. My newest story has almost as many 4s as 5s. I want a soda after the game too! And ice cream!

To be clear, I have never complained, and have even welcomed many criticisms, because they helped improve the story. Though the latest one has no constructive criticism, just low scores (and again, 4 is hardly low).

She has an outstanding toy collection.
If you don't want anyone to score your story, then don't allow any readers to vote. Simple as that. Most story sites allow voting for the purpose of the reader to give the author feedback. Sprite's right about the issues of other sites. They tend to get a higher percentage of trolls and people who will trash your score for basically no better reason than because they can. At least here, the members will proved real feedback (usually though a PM, but some will leave a comment) about how good or bad they felt your story was. I think Verbal said it best about how not all stories get all 5's... and the bulk of us do not complain about this.

That is not what they said at all... How do you get it so wrong? Your reading comprehension is so bizarre.

Good Lord... That's actually the problem here, bozo. On lush anything that is not a 5 or any kind of comment that is not total praise is considered "trolling". In no way do you get actual useful feedback on lush. Someone can fall asleep on a keyboard and call the resulting gibberish a poem or flash erotica and a bunch of people will act like that author is Shakespeare reincarnated. Last time I left a realistic comment on a story that author blocked me within the hour. (and let me know they did so because I am a troll) Like, it was a legitimate comment saying I scored the story a 4 and I talked about areas of improvement in a serious way but that was considered trolling.

Giving legitimate critique and being a troll are not necessarily mutually exclusive ;)

Honestly, I think most writers, especially new writers, are far more tender about sharing their work than a six or seven year old. They heal slower from criticism, too.

Don't get me wrong. If you really want to improve, you'd better learn to deal with it. If you want to publish, you'd better really fucking learn to deal with it.

However, if you're just expressing yourself and looking for a little attention, maybe all you needed was an encouraging score and a few people to say, "Hot story! Will there be more?". I don't mind just giving a five or refraining from scoring.

(When I first got here, I gave some fours and even a three or two I think. I don't remember who I gave them to, but bless them for not blocking me, whoever they were!)
