It ends 13 years of Labour rule.

Considering the state the UK economy is in, I think Labour did well to get out when they did:

The UK budget deficit will outstrip any other country in the EU this year and will be even worse than Greece, according to figures from the European Commission today.

The group's spring forecast puts UK borrowing at 12 per cent of GDP for 2010 - more than that of any of the 27 other EU countries and far worse than Greece's 9.3 per cent.

The gloomy prediction will mean that it is even more important that any incoming government reacts quickly to tackle Britain's mountain of debt.

EU commissioner Olli Rehn said that the 'first and foremost challenge of the new government' would be to tackle the nation's deficit.

As an expat, I follow it from afar, but had no idea the economy is in THAT bad a state!

I have some long term European share funds, I think it's time I took the hit and bail on them, it's going to be at least 5 years before Europe as a whole get their act together in my opinion.
Farewell brute British pound ha. I know jack and shit about the UK's economy and their policies but I'm sure their royal family takes a big chunk of money.
And nicola, it's not like the US is in any better shape than the whole of Europe. I guess investing in Asia is the thing to do for the time being. Until they hit their inevitable crisis.

Well, I have 2 geared funds too, in BRIC and China directly too, you need a diversified portfolio to minimise risk.

It was fun putting half my life savings into funds in the middle of 2007, right before the crash happened, and watching them half in value overnight
The level of debt by our government and the massive trade imbalance are setting the stage for runaway inflation and some very high interest rates. This is necessary and in the long run and not altogether a bad thing. By lowering the value of the dollor, and the inevitable wage presssure it will bring, the current debts the nation has, as well as the cost of the overpriced homes we have will be brought in line by the fact that much more money will be flowing. Milk my cost 15 dollars a gallon, but the cost of those debts will become much lower in relation to what people make.
The danger is that cash and for a time, stock savings will drop in value with it. My advice, buy gold. You probably have another 5 to 7 years before this all catches up with us.
