Why is it that commercials, just about regardless of who the commercial is for, always make guys out to be clueless, goofy morons? Somebody mentioned this to me a while back, and since then, I've noticed that its almost across the board. If life were like TV commercials, all guys would be sort of good looking, but sporting an IQ of about 40, with roughly a 6-year-olds sense of responsibility.

Is this insulting to you guys? I'm insulted for you. And why do you all think that commercials depict guys to be dumbasses all the time?
That’s a good observation LadyX. To me it is not insulting at all.

I see it as harmless if the man is always baffled / bumbling etc ; but if you portray a woman as the baffled / bumbling figure, it would be far from harmless: such an advertisment would be read as portraying women to be idiots.

I'd like to mention one reason I say that such portrayal of men is "harmless". To my mind, the effect that such advertising has is not to shape the subconscious opinion that men are idiots or lower; but in fact I think it makes us look approachable, unintimidating, agreeable. We're not just bumbling idiots in advertisement. We're also highly likable (even if silly) characters. They are forming the opinion in people that men have a lighter, approachable, not-domineering side.

The way I see it, these "bumbling men" commercials aren't done in a way that are mean-spiritted to men, nor in a way that forms an unflattering image of men in the minds of people who watch these ads.. .
In a way I see it, these advertisements aren't something negative that I'm forced to "grin and bear". They're something even flattering in that they FREE me to not *have* to be the macho stereotype.(even though I maybe….. )
I wonder if partially it is because many ads are aimed at women- wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends. Often in the ads where you have a goofy man, the woman is the 'hero' of the scene. And let's face it, we women are oft complaining about the daft things our men do. A bit of exaggerated humour that we can relate to makes for good selling points, I think.

You've hit on something here. But it isn't just in commercials. Think about all the sitcoms where dads are portrayed as buffoons who are always getting into trouble caused by their own ineptness. Everybody Loves Raymond, The King of Queens (not a dad but still shown as dumb), The Simpsons, Home Improvement, The Bernie Mac Show, etc. I'm sure I could come up with more if I tried. Funny thing is, I like most of these shows. But the truth is, all of these guys are portrayed as too dumb to survive on their own, if not for their smarter more mature wives. Far cry from the repectable Ward Cleaver, Bill Huxtable, Howard Cunninghiams of the tv world.

Bracing for impact now...

well it does offend me, but it play to the female thinking at times, as some think we are dumb, stupid, and lazy . We are not all this way!

The reason for this is because in commercials you want to get people's attention in the first couple of seconds. Having a guy doing something stupid or acting stupid gets people to watch more than a serious guy telling you about the quality of the beer's ingredients. If i say WAAASSSSUUPPP... Most americans will know what I'm talking about. Those wassup commercials were dumb as fuck but they got people's attention because they were so stupid. It's all about marketing and nothing to do with saying men are stupid.

In advertising comedy is king. Serious guys aren't funny.
