Have you ever hitchhiked? Picked up a hitchhiker? Anything interesting happen?
No to both.
I have hitch hiked from Boston to Northern Minnesota when Interstate 90 was finished. It was an adventure.

Part of the trip was with what we call a "Cougar" today. As I said, it was an adventure.
I have hitch-hiked a bunch. The most epic trip was from Iowa to NYC, via Canada. Went straight north into Minnesota, then Canada, went east around the Great Lakes, then down to New York. Stayed there for over a decade.

One of the great formative experiences of my life. SO much fun, and SO mind opening.

And I'll never let my kids do it in a million years. smile
Around 2002 I was up in Nebraska attending a two-week army training school. We had received around three feet of snow. When I completed the course I began driving to my home down in Kansas. While on a state highway, some three hours away from home, my alternator went on the fritz losing all electrical power in my mini-van. I pulled off the road. At that time I had never owned a cell phone. I was stranded about five miles from the nearest small town in sub-freezing weather. I hitched a ride from the next person going by in the direction I was heading. He dropped me off at the post office in town where I was able to call AAA.

I stayed there for about an hour until the tow truck arrived and took me back to put my vehicle in tow and take me to the next larger town where repairs could be made. Then I sat in a bar waiting while they replaced the alternator. I got on the road again in about two hours. Luckily it was not even dark when I arrived home that afternoon.

I can't recall doing any other hitchhiking.
Back in high school, I missed the band bus after an away football game and had to hitch-hike back home from an out-of town school at 11:00 on a Friday night. A trucker picked me up and drove me back to my hometown. He was really surprised to find me all alone at night wearing a majorette outfit, but he was very nice and even drove out of his way to get me home safely.
I hitchhiked all the time when I was younger. Best trip was from Canada to the US Midwest; the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska then back through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Amazing trip filled with amazing life experiences. Met some incredible people, saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, got arrested, saw some iconic US destinations (Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, Sturgis, Devil's Tower, Yellowstone, miles of grain and cornfields, Pine Ridge.) Was my first trip by myself and opened up a whole new world to me. Slept in some pretty unusual places. The list of characters who picked me up was endless. I was in my late teens, from a small Canadian town so it was a bit eye-opening. It's been very strange lately as a lot of these places have been getting a lot of press lately. The only major city I was in was Minneapolis where I found myself in a really rough part of town although nothing happened. First time I was the only white person in a neighbourhood. I'd have to give a special nod to a couple of folks from the US armed forces who treated me like gold.
