Has anyone else here tried Melatonin? Not the homeopathic stuff, the actual stuff. I finally got mine, took it the first night and slept for a good 7-8hrs for the first time in 2 months. Unfortunately due to the sleep deficit I was so tired I also then snoozed on and off all day long. I've been a bit scared to take it since as I actually need to be functional. Then of course tonight I have no slept at all. I had too much on my mind but I should have taken the melatonin and shut it down. I'm thinking tonight I will feed my kids at like 5pm and then put a movie on for them so Dad can put them to bed when he gets home and I'll crash and see if I can get 14hrs straight. If you haven't tried it, I'd highly recommend it. Staying asleep is most of my issue and because it is slow release it seemed to have done the trick. Hopefully more than once LOL

I've used Melatonin, 3mg, though you can get higher dosages off the shelf. If I recall I saw bottles up to 20mg. I only just started using it and only occasionally. I seem to sleep better and no drowsiness the next day if I go to bed at a reasonable time. Like Gillian I've tried just about everything although I stay away from prescription meds.
what makes a difference for me:
regular sleep schedule especially sticking to it on weekends
exercise
melatonin
valerian root
not eating close to bedtime

I also spent years trying to find the right pillow and bed. That made a HUGE difference.

I have a tendency to drink too much coffee during the day which probably doesn't help; you end up on a bit of a hamster wheel cycle of too little sleep then compensating with caffeine. I never worry when I'm awake I just can't stop my brain from meandering all over the place. I think I would be sad if the meandering stopped...

We can only get it on script here which is why I ordered it online. I got a 5mg and a 10mg, and the 10 wipes me out so I'll definitely try the 5mg and see how it goes.

I know a lot of my sleep issues could be imprvived with better sleep hygiene / discipline, like no phone, not working in here, but its not always the easiest thing to do either. I did go for a two hour walk the other night at midnight and had my best sleep in a while so its definitely something ill be doing more of. Just not so late hha.

Yeah, I find exercise and being active makes a huge difference. You also hit on something that scientists suggest plays a big role: watching TV, being on computer/tablet/phone...the type of light emitted by the screens is apparently disruptive to sleep also. They recommend staying away from such light sources for 1 - 2 hours before bed.

The exercise and being active does help. But the blasphemy of no computer before bed, not sure I could handle that, lol. I do try and I do not consume any caffeine. I think insomnia is just something I may have to contend with in my life. Sigh....

Well, Gill, I'm always around of you need company during the night, not always on Lush but on messenger apps if you need distraction.

The no screens doesn't work for me either, I'm usually glued to mine because of study... if it's not that I'm writing, or blogging. I probably just need some friends to chat to on the phone and maybe then I'd avoid the written outlet. Who knows. I could / should consider prioritising my timing though, doing printed reading before bed or something... One thing to think about.

In other news, a win for me, I think the Easter visited me early as last night I slept all night. No melatonin. Woke up twice, long enough to realise i'd left my light on but not to turn it off, second time managed to turn it off. Seriously woke up a new woman, on my own, before my kids, 7:30am. Incredible.

ugh, i know right?

Say. Her. Name.

For me its genetic, I think cause my mom is the same way. I am defiantly like a polar bear vampire I am more active in the cold and dark. I just like to be up at night either playing video games, jerking off, reading or talking with people.

I used to do nothing cause my schedule allowed me to be up till late, but now school, the progression of time and the crushing burdens of life have made it so I get tired at 10 sometimes

As if I don't have enough problems, with all those damn happy birds outside! My sleeping is so relatively messed up, that I can't tell you when I'll go to sleep/be awake ever. But I would rather be night shift than a day shifter a thousand times over.

P.S. Melatonin is Pez candy...I have a lot of people with orders for it, and do they sleep at night? Here's your answer, speaking of insomnia.

For generations our ancestors fought proudly as warriors against the Jedi. Reclaim our armored past for an unending future.
Smoocher black-boxes me every night around bedtime. I can't go to sleep till he tucks me in! lol
I need very little sleep and always wake up, ready for a new day.....

I had bipolar disorder, but 7 electroshock therapy procedures got rid of it. Before though, I used to have insanely terrible insomnia. If I didn't take a sleep aid, like Ambien, I could stay up for weeks on end, at any given time, if I didn't take my medications, and sometimes even if I did. I honestly wish I had that type of energy, and mania now. I prefer being just super happy, and ridiculously motivated, instead of just feeling like a deflated balloon, in terms of my energy levels.
Xanax helps but I wish it would last longer.

Morphine would be my need right now.

But seriously, I just can't get my mind to stop racing. I should have gone to deep clean the kitchen or something. I didn't want wake others however...

I don't know anything about morphine. But I do hope that you find something else to help you.

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope you sleep better as well.

You're welcome. And thanks as well.

I'm not holding my breath though. lol
Shit outta' luck
In Alaska, insomnia is a common problem. With the varying daylight - winter we hardly get any and in summer that's all we get - I have learned to sleep when I am tired no matter what time it is. Of course that isn't always possible, but I have also learned I can, if need be, get by on a couple hours sleep for two or three days in a row. After that, I crash for twelve hours or so but by then I usually can!

Insomnia and I are really good friends!
