The word 'factoid' did not originally mean 'small fact', or 'useless data', but in fact refers to a piece of information which is generally accepted as fact, but is actually misleading, misinformation, or just false. It is derived by taking the word 'fact' (obviously) and combining it with the suffix 'oid', which means 'alike', 'similar to', or 'appearing as'.
Random House (and I think a few others) have added the more conventional modern meaning to their new words section in the last few years though, so both meanings are now correct.
