I'm newish to the forums and I wonder if this has been debated before.

I think a 5 pt rating scale is too imprecise, and I think that going to a 10pt scale of some kind (or allowing for 4.5, 3.5 etc., which is the same thing), would allow for perhaps better voting and less "vote inflation."

Now for example, if you compare the votes to grades or percentages, a 5 is a 100% or an A+. A 4 is an 80% or a B-. that's a huge gap. I'd like to reserve my perfect scores for truly outstanding stories. But if I don't want to give a pretty good story a B-, I usually wind up giving it a 5. I think there is room for something in between a 4 and a 5, whether a 4.5 or a 9.

I think we'd see a lot more of *that* score and a lot fewer perfect ones.

I totally agree.

But what do you do with all the stories on the site now with 1-5 scores? Convert a 4 to an 8? A 5 to a 10?

You make a great point.

Yes. If converting to a 1-10 scale.

Or if keeping 1-5 scale, which might feel more consistent, then new votes on old stories and all votes on new stories would have possibility also of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5.

I find that most of my audience are authors and they are a tough crowd. Overall, they vote and comment, being as they also value that feedback and can relate to how impacting it can be. I don't keep track of who scored how, but for anyone who votes, comments or both, I send them a personal thank you note.
Here's how I see it:

(ONE) What the fuck is this doing here?

(TWO) I can see you are trying... TRY HARDER.

(THREE) Getting There.

(FOUR) SO CLOSE DON'T FUCKING STOP!

(FIVE) FUCKING YESSSSSSSSSSSS!

The point is, people are not using the voting system for what it was intended for. And even if you changed the system, I bet anything you like that people would still vote top marks 95% of the time and still be hostile toward people who don't give them a perfect score.

It's people being petty and over-sensitive that's the problem, not the voting system.

I would be totally fine with that. From here on out to add a .5 to the scores. It's just a better system.

I'm just saying that you will most certainly get whining about unfairness. People saying the older stories have higher scores because of the old system. With a system like you're suggesting I would give out way more 4.5s than 5s. Just like I give out way more 9s than 10s on IMDB.com.

I believe this has been discussed in the past as well as a thumb up thumb down system. If I remember right many authors whined about what I pointed out above.

I'll be QUITE HONEST, I think this is a pretty good compromise/idea... I SAY THAT knowing that BANG GOES all my carefully STOLEN FIVES!!!

("It's not REALLY a FOUR but IS IT REALLY A FIVE???")

Thankfully, we have a CREW of Story Mods who decide with THE OWNERS how to deal with suggestions like these...

The SUGGESTION as I understand goes: 1 - 1.5 - 2 - 2.5 -............................. - 4.5 - 5.

It MIGHT be a fairer system and CERTAINLY would lead to LESS all five votes...

(The CYNIC in ME wonders if the same rules would really apply? Voters FAVOURITES still get ALL FIVE votes no matter what. I SAY THIS AS AN UNDOUBTED CASUALTY OF THAT KIND OF VOTE!!!)

My VISCERAL take on ALL OF THIS is that 'If It Ain't broke Don't Fix It...'

BUT, the ONE THING I KNOW about this site is that threads like THIS ONE are carefully looked at and discussed...

Let's wait and see???????

I'm crap at leaving comments. problem is, i get tired of posting the same old things, sometimes - it was great, it moved me, it made me wet. I have a small corral of writers that i always read, even if it takes me a bit to get to them. Dancing Doll is one. Magical Felix, Ravenstar, Lizzy, Delphi, Echeclon, Buz are others. Steph is on that list. at his worst, he's entertaining and a fun read. at his best, which is is often at, he's brilliant. no, he doesn't advertise, but really, he shouldn't have to - if you're not reading his stuff, you're missing out. just thought i'd put that up cause i felt like it.

Steph: we need to have negative numbers, too, so i can finally vote on some of Sprite's....

Sprite: you're just jealous of my talent.

Steph: if you're talking about that thing you do where you shoot ping pong balls out of your cunt... not really.

Sprite: how about that thing i do where a smack you upside the head with a rock?

I think it's two related issues, both related to "grade inflation":

1) people voting 5s because the story is better than a 4 in their mind, even if it's not quite as good as "as good as it can be," which at some level a 5 kind of has to be, since it is the best possible score.

2) people voting 5s for other reasons. They don't want to risk retaliation. They are "helping out their friends," and other reasons haven't thought of.

There's nothing you can do about issue #2 (unless you give every account a daily quota of 5 votes to give). But I do think one can try to fix #1.

I don't feel strongly about this. But I do know that I often do hesitate between a 4 and a 5 because in my mind it's an A-, not a B- or an A+.

How about just giving a percentage score?

How many stories would get 100%?

At least 95% of them would get a 100% score if my calculations are correct.

I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with the voting system. The voting feature on this site is pretty standard, it SHOULD work well and there is nothing wrong with it. I can assure you of that. It's the fact that certain people are misusing it and it's caught on, became etiquette to vote 5 and anything less is an insult.

A small minority of people misuses the voting system and thinks everybody should be giving perfect scores. Those people get offended by a 4 vote and retaliate with tit-for-tat and a few hostile messages, then that sets the tone for the entire site, and before you know it, people are scoring 5s 95% of the time.

That's all there is to it at the end of the day.

I wish we were talking about cat videos. This thread's driving me to distraction. There's nothing wrong with the voting system. The voting systems great, couldn't be better. It's a good job you're here to put a smile on my face, otherwise I'd be banging my head on a wall by now.

in all seriousness, the voting system has been kind of broken for ages - it's been talked about. the one thing that has been agreed on is that we prefer it to be broken in a positive way (people getting high scores and feeling good about themselves and encouraged) than negative ways as i've seen on other sites, where writers get hateful comments and low scores leading to being discouraged. is it, in the end, representative of the quality of everything posted here? probably not, but it does create a better and friendlier atmosphere for the writers who are, in the end, mostly amateurs still learning their craft. smile

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up. If it works well for this site and people that frequent it, then it's all good.

Before this all went off tangent and into improving the voting system, my point was this: The OP asked, " Readers that don't write. Do they give lower scores?" Now people were actually debating that topic, so I simply said that this was simply undebatable because nobody gives low scores, whether they be writers or non-writers. And I don't see a 4 vote as a low score.

Anyway, I'm sure people can see where I'm coming from.

At some point, everyone may get a 1or 2's. (even 3's)

I'm pretty sure I didn't deserve any 1's or 2's. Ever.

Of course it was by someone who doesn't write anything. I don't recall if my other low scores were by writers or not, some were.

I was thinking of any other 1's I had gotten. I don't remember. I can't keep track of that.

My advice is to set settings to member only voting and they must leave a comment.

I think this is an excellent point.

And to get back on topic, I do think that non-writers score lower than authors.

On those occasions when I get a surprisingly low score and I know who voted it, I sometimes look at the member's page out of curiosity. I'd say at *least* nine times out of ten the low score is from a non-author.

Of course this is just a small sample size and totally anecdotal.

lol - umm.... yeah, talk to my fellow mods and you'll get a different opinion - you got the fairy dust and tiara spot on, but i tend to terrorize them (when i'm not making them horny and happy). ;)
