Recommend me an Android Phone

I have an iPhone (great piece of kit), and a Galaxy S2 (for testing apps mainly).

The latter doesn't charge properly, and is now in the bin.

I need a replacement for the S2.

Can anyone recommend me a good Android phone?

I've heard the Nexus is fairly good. HTC a great phone, but the company may soon be down the gurgler.

I would go with the S3 or the S4...or any other phone with a removable battery. The differentiation lines for normal day use between the newer android phones is so slim it really doesnt matter which you choose. I would suggest the one you like the look of more and that saisfies your wants. I like the samsungs because of the physical home button and I have a spare battery for my S3 that fits in my wallet just in case.

I got a Kyocera Hydro. I love my Android!

Touch screen, completely waterproof (and I've accidentally testes this on numerous occasions, having a three year old that knows no fear!) and actually simple to run. I've got mine running on Google and it's synched to my Chromebook, too.

I can't do a lot for webpages, though, which sucks. But it's a Muve phone, which allows me unlimited music downloading as part of my phone service.

Probably what stands out for me at the moment is the s4, and the HTC one. There are some cool ones coming though. Out of what's coming soon probably the Xperia z1 stands out for me.

I love my Samsung......I started with a galaxy s and now have an S4 and simply love them..... I do like the droid.....my next purchase is the nexus 10 though Google here I come

Our resident code monkey had 2 Samsung phones, both did the same as mine and are now door wedges. Checking many forums, it seems it's a common issue.

I have noticed this, but I managed to sort out my own issues with my S3 but that was due to custom roms and kernels and such to sort out some harrowing issues.

Are there any specifications you would desire in the phone? Might be able to give you better suggestions.

My friend has the sony xperia z which she is immensly pleased with, however there are quite a few phones to suggest so anything specifically you might be looking for could help with suggestions.

I can't really offer much help in the way of which phone to go for, but I can jabber about some technical aspects, which may help you. Right now, I'm using an HTC Desire X, which is a good wee phone. It is fast and responsive and the battery life is good in WiFi. It has a decent amount of storage, which is expandable up to 32GB with a MicroSD card. It seems not a lot of android phones have expandable memory these days, which is fine if you're not storing loads of crap on it, but if you're a hoarder like me, it is much more expensive.

I will say one thing: If you're going to get any android phone with Ice Cream Sandwich (android 4.0), I'd recommend upgrading it to Jellybean (4.1), if it has the capability. The reason I say this is because of a bug in ICS, whereby it won't charge if there are too many apps running. I've found the only way to combat this is to actually charge it via USB, rather than the mains. JB doesn't have this bug, or if it does, it has it to a lesser extent.

One more thing, which I shall just say in general, is battery life. It can be extended without the need for an extended battery. The trouble with android is its obsession with keeping apps in cache. Unfortunatley, just using a task manager doesn't help, this just kills the thread, rather than stopping the app itself. To stop the app you have to go into settings > apps > [app name] > force stop > ok. This will stop the app and give you about an extra 1%. Switching off GPS, background data (or in this case, limiting it), auto sync and Google's location service can also squeeze a little out of it.

Also using a different launcher -like launcher pro, or ADW, can help a lot. It's all about fiddling and getting the right one for your needs.

Going back to the background data thing. On ICS go to accounts and sync. From there you can select settings for individual apps and have them only refresh when opened, for example. There is also a setting, usually within the wireless and networks tab within settings, which will allow you to set a mobile data usage limit. Once you've done that you can go into settings with in the usage tab and tell it to restrict background data. All this does reduce functionality of the phone, but it also does help with battery life.

Anyway, sorry I went off on a tangent. Hopefully, there's something in this rambling that will help you decide on a phone.

I've never had a problem with my S3 and my Note & S4 are performing perfectly at the mmoment. Most people who have difficulty with the S are those that try to put custom kernels and such on them.

Sounds like the Nexus 4, Droid DNA, or the HTC One are your best options. I almost bought the HTC One.

I have an HTC DNA and I love it. Best phone I've ever had. Super fast quad core processor is the way to go. From what I've read, the HTC One is a good phone too and a bit newer than the DNA. So far, I've been very impressed with HTC.
