I define nothing. Not beauty, not patriotism. I take each thing as it is, without prior rules about what it should be.

I just finished "Inherent Vice" by Thomas Pynchon.

I've seen the 2014 movie twice so I was intrigued. The Paul Thomas Anderson film was loved by some and hated by most. The movie was beautifully shot, and well acted. It just didn't seem to go anywhere.

Unfortunately the book was even more confusing than the film.

I've been trying to dissect both the book and the movie with limited results. As far as I can tell it's a commentary on the changing of times. There's also one super hot sex scene that is done very well in the movie.

I made a thread about movies that are better than the book they are based on... I think this is one of those.
Just finished Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff. Now I'm reading The Secret Healer by Ellin Carsta.

Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane (1896)
It's about that chick in The Odyssey who lures men to the shores of her island and turns them into pigs. It's supposed to be a subversive, feminist take on the story. Frankly, my eye was drawn to the review in the Sunday paper because newspaper spell check had changed the headline from "Circe" to "Circle." It looks good.

I'm reading:

The North Water, By Ian McGuire.

It was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2016. It was also one of the NY Times best books of 2016.

It's quite difficult to place this book in a specific genre.... Historical fiction, thriller, mystery...

It involves an Irish opium addicted doctor and a psychopathic and murderer on an Arctic whaling ship. If you've read "The Terror" then I think you'll like this one. It's relatively short, and sucks you in immediately. The writing is top notch.

They are also making a television mini series about the story that will be out next year.

I haven't finished yet, but it's already one of the best books I've read in the last few years.

"Where the Jews Aren't" is a book about he persecution of Jews under the pre and post Soviet regimes in Russia. It focuses a lot on the Jewish Automonous region set up in Eastern Siberia called Birabizhan.

I was hoping for more objective information.... this was lacking. It felt almost like a highschool history project consisting primarily of the author's grandmother as the main source.

In our current climate we are apt to forget (or simply realize) that the Arab conquests of the 7-10th centuries was one of the most impressive military conquests of world history. This book is a very comprehensive account of the historical aspects that avoid any pseudo-proselytizing.

Anyone that his a student of military history or simply has an interest in the history of the modern world should have at least a basic knowledge of this subject.

This isn't the best book I've read on this subject, it's just the most recent. It's a fascinating subject and one that has implications that resonate to this day.
I tend to read about Hitler and Serial Killers.

There hasn't been any new serial killers to talk about.
Lincoln's Hat - and the TEA Movement's Anger by David Selcer

What a horribly dark and disturbing tale... We all know the story of the Nicholas II and his family following the Russian revolution of 1917. I've read numerous books and watched numerous documentaries. But they all seem to gloss over the details of the execution. The actual details are horrific.

When you get a glimpse into the lives of the Romanov children and then imagine the horrific deaths by shooting, bayoneting and bludgeoning the characters in this story become more that real.

I still think that there is a movie to be made here. It's been done (kind of) but they tend to gloss over the details. The impending doom of the final days as the family sits in a boarded up house in Siberia would make for a very interesting character piece.

The story has been told in film before, but not like it should be.
