As my Dad always used to say, shit happens - deal with it. Surround yourself with people you love, and who love you, and you can survive pretty much anything.
And yes, try to do as much for yourself as you can, but you should ask for help when you need it. I'm still learning this one, and will struggle on and on without asking for help.
