Google's new unified privacy policy will take effect on March 1. All the data Google automatically gathers about you, such as the sites you visit, will be dumped into one virtual bucket with your name on it. While you can't opt out of the new approach without abandoning Google sites, you can erase your browsing history.

"Search data can reveal particularly sensitive information about you, including facts about your location, interests, age, sexual orientation, religion, health concerns, and more," warns the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco and an advocate for online privacy.

If you delete your Google Web History that includes the searches you've made and the sites you've visited, you'll prevent Google from associating that data with information it has collected from other Google sites you use such as YouTube and . While no one knows exactly how Google would use your combined information, the policy changes have already prompted more than raised eyebrows.

The Center for Digital Democracy today filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. It has asked the FTC to sue Google to stop the policy change and to fine the company. The FTC can impose fines up to $16,000 per day for each violation.

In the meantime, the EFF recommends that Google users delete their Web history. Here's how:

1. Go to Google.com and sign into your account.
2. Use the dropdown menu under your name in the upper right-hand corner to access your settings. You'll now be on your accounts overview page.
3. Find the section called Services and you'll see a link to "View, enable, or disable web history." Here you can remove all of your Web history or selected items. When you disable Web History it will remain turned off until you turn it back on.

To get a detailed view of the information about you that Google keeps, go to "Products" from your accounts overview page. Click the button labeled "Dashboard." You'll see a listing of the Google products you use and links to edit your information.

If you have more than one account - do it for each one. Some of you may not have the web history enabled - which mean no data has been collected. I suggest following the steps above and double-checking so your safe either way!

Thanks so much, Espresso! Vital info there.
I've had that disabled since I found out about it.

Google have been tracking you for years. Write 20 emails to someone about shoes in , and see which ads appear on the RHS of the screen...
I remove my Google Browsing History yesterday evening.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, good tip!

Thanks, that's something I'd forgotten about. But just one thing, not to sound like a mad conspiracy theorist, but even if you delete it, that doesn't necessarily mean it's gone, Google probably keeps it hidden and uses it somehow and because people (myself included) tend to click "I agree" on EULAs without reading, you never really know what Google (or anyone else) are doing with your data. It's sad and scary to think that nothing we do these days is truly secret or secure. Nonetheless, thank you for this information, I shall make sure to delete my browsing history.

I totally get what you're saying. That's why I'm upset. There is a big difference between what they are telling us and what they may be actually doing. I think adults have the right to have total privacy online.

Plus, I think there is a post on LS forum about software we can use to thoroughly clean our your computer. I'm not sure off all of the details though.

btw, since your youtube account is connected to your account - you may want to think about what searches you've racked up there! My shirtless Jensen Ackles searches are on my "record" I'm sure.

Google is still not as invasive as other sites, like that nosy spying application Facebook

I use Google as a search engine only. Screw a bunch of the rest of their inane shit.

from what I understand this only affects google accounts... If your not logged in it can't gather information about a ghost user

As far as I'm aware, that is true, but they still track your IP address, which means if you've logged in with that IP address, you're still being tracked, even if you're logged out. There are ways around this but they are usually slow or complicated and not worth the effort.

Yeah, I get all sorts of writing, publishing and book type stuff being advertised on my account...

I didn't realize I could disable the history tracking thingy...I just hope I can figure it out without accidentally deleting my whole account or something...

I did this too. Thanks for spreading the word...
Thanks for sharing Espresso.
Please keep in mind, Google gathers other data by your ip, they also link things like map searches to your ip. So if you search for where your house is on Google maps and things like that your still making a portfolio for yourself; however, unlike this new stuff, I don't think they do much with their ip indexing shit yet… but I could always be out of date on this.
Hi all, if you want to really clean your computer you should use something like ccleaner. That one really is thorough and makes sure that no trace of whatever you do on the web and your pc in general remains.
off course this doesn't clear any dara stored online.
