I know this event is still a while away ( June 16th to be exact ) however, here in brazil people are buzzing about this already.

Chael Sonnen is being played as the biggest villain in the sport and the fact that the even will happen in Brazil is the extra spice the media needed to give it complete coverage.

Here is the first preview for the fight, posted yesterday... ENJOY ...

I just got the low-down about Sonnen ... they fought before.

Sounds like the last round was .... crazy!! Until the last 30 seconds.

I am supposed to "pay for view" this one. There are some crazy interviews out there with ... here's one ... I hope everyone can see it and it's available for everyone to see:

Not gonna lie... I love Sonnen. He's highly entertaining and one of the best trash-talkers in pro-sports.

I was really excited about this fight before the injury-delay and based on the first Sonnen v Silva match, I was thinking that Chael might be able to grind out a decision in a rematch, but based on his last performance in the Bisping fight, I'm not so sure anymore. I think it showed more holes in his game than I thought he had.

If anyone has a chance of taking the belt from Silva, it's going to be a wrestler like Sonnen, and while I certainly don't discount him, I think that Silva will be well-prepared, will already be building on the experience with him in the Octagon in his previous fight AND most importantly - he will have the entire country of Brazil behind him in a way that will surely be an EPIC spectacle.

I'm thinking Silva gets a TKO in round 2 or 3, but could be earlier because Silva is more reactive in his fight-strategy and Chael will want to prove a point and push the pace early and I think he's gonna get caught.

You can say EPIC again -- it will be the biggest fight in UFC history, maybe even "fighting" history as a whole category.

That´s a pretty well made point (for a girl, hehe jk). But you are completely correct - Silva´s kryptonite is wrestling and he knows this very well. Which is why he considers a future fight with St. Pierre a must for him to be considered the "best", even if he must change categories to fight him.

I agree that Chael (cool name) is a great entretainer, but he doesnt have the psicological stability to handle Silva in his best form. Take the first fight as an example. Silva had a broken rib, and took a severe pounding for 5 rounds only to be more focused and catch Sonnen off guard with a few seconds to go.

I think the fight will go more then 3 rounds. Sonnen is not stupid, he knows he wont knock Silva out and if he comes out to hard, he will undoubtedly open himself up for one of the Spider´s nototious bite´s - Kick, punch name it...

All I know, is that June 16th is a long time away and a lot can happen still...

Can´t wait.

I don't think the fabled GSP v Silva fight will ever happen. Silva probably only has a couple of fights left in his career, but I think he's better suited to take on Jones for a final "super-fight" than GSP. The reasons are multiple, ranging from timing due to GSP's injury hiatus and next scheduled bouts to the fact that GSP is not a big welterweight to begin with and he'd be more likely to move down a weight class than up. Silva already walks around at a significantly higher weight (I think it's something like 220lbs) so I don't think he'd be able to cut much more than he already does. Catchweight - meh - I don't think it's going to happen - even for a one-time only superfight. They both have too much to lose. Jones is a more suitable candidate for Silva but not sure they will want to put the young superstar into that kind of pressure-cooker at this stage in the game incase it derails him.

Oh and haha re "for a girl"... I can hold my own in these debates, trust me. smile

PS. Not to derail this thread again but I gotta ask and all I need is a name: Who really won that fight? Diaz or Condit.

I agree that Jones would be more suitable. However, Silva has answered this question repeatedly here in Brasil and in his opinion, it will be easier take off the weight then to put it on. I'm not convinced he is just not scared to get his ass kicked by jones who is younger and way more hungry the GSP.

I think Silva should fight both. Proved once and for all he is the best. Period. Then there will be no doubt!

About the Diaz / Condit fight. I could not watch it, but I think I have been needing to. Dana White is all upset. He is going to kick some ass over this... someone will surely get fired or has already. He believes the judges fucked up. I have to see the fight still... what do you think?

I would love for Silva to fight both. That would be the 'badass' thing to do, and the perfect way to cap off a career. He beats both and he goes down in history as the best fighter of all time. Of course - that's the best case scenario. If he doesn't 'finish' in those fights, and it goes to decision, there will always be controversy, especially in a close fight...

Which brings me to the Diaz/Condit fight for the interim welterweight title. You need to watch this one! The argument is - should judges base their scores purely on fight-metrics of number of strikes landed... or should aggression/octagon control and quality of strikes factor in. Pretty much Diaz advanced on Condit and pushed him for the entire fight, half the time with his hands down, taunting him, while Condit *literally* kept running away like a little girl, refusing to full-on engage him but just ticking off points with quantity of little leg-kicks... and somehow based on this he won the belt and the right to fight GSP next. It was a controversial fight, most of the fighters backed Diaz, Dana played politician, but like I said - watch it and decide. I've never seen a fight where one guy refuses to engage the other, and he still manages to walk away with the belt... And I'm not a fan of either guy, so I think I'm pretty neutral on the subject... but in my mind - if you want to win decisively, you can't act like Forrest Gump.
Quote by Dancing_Doll

That would most def. be the badass thing to do and I really hope he does it! Only time will tell though.

As for the Diaz/Condit fight --- you make a great point and I think this is a fundamental point in the sport. How to score a fight. My opinion is that if UFC wants to be respected as a true fighters home and can not admit this kind of bullshit. You are completely right - he ran away like a little bitch. Dana White should force a rematch immediately!

P.S. I have some new respect for you now. Already respected as a writer and a devout lushie but, mma? - i like!

I know... I would like to play it all cool, but I do confess that a guy originally got me into it.

I've had dirty bets riding on every single UFC since last April. I'm a competitive type and I like to win, so I always do my research. Somewhere along the way I became a genuine fan.

hhhhmmmm... i wont ask.

I have a love hate relationship with the sport... love to watch the fights but I get so nervous... its possible that i dont breathe during the whole round.

But I have to admit that I have been getting much more into it since Brazilians are getting more prestige. And I respect White - good business man

Fernando: There are heaps and heaps of Brazilians in the sport, the best. This sport may even rank up there with soccer for you in no time
The last fight with Sonnen was a good fight, entertaining. Yeah, the dude is entertaining .. and a good fighter .. the BEST or the BADDEST .. Oh, hell no! He sometimes it a bit much for me with his cockiness .. but it's mostly show and for good T.V. and publicity. Kinda smart since he gets the attention.

These guys are dedicated, multi-talented, and disciplined to say the least. I love the sport, (not just for personal reasons). I think you all have good reason to be excited and proud about the upcoming fight. Sonnen may eat his words!!

I agree with you 100%. The fighters are even starting to associate themselves with football clubs. They have gone as far alreadyas hired the same marketing companies. You may have noticed that Anderson Silva has for the last few months appeared both in the octagon and in oficial interviews with the Cortinthians logo - either on his shorts, or on a t-shirt. He hired a company called 9INE - ran and owned by Ronaldo, the now retired Brazilian football player. This company also manages the image of other Brazilian stars like - Neymar (19 yr old football phenomenon).

Chael Sonnen, in acordance with his persona, has "pledged alligiance" with Palmeiras, which are unsuprisngly Corinthians biggest rivals (similar to the Yankees / Red Sox rivalry). So the media is buying into the popularity of the sport.

Yes, but Anderson Silva should never forgive his marketing company or agent for letting him do that hideous Burger King commercial...

No doubt the comercial was hideous... the the money was still green though. Now, the marketing company´s job is not to direct the comercials, but to find companies that are willing to pay for their clients image... so I think the blame should be directed towards the director of the comercial...

Its not the only one he made, here check this one out...

Better!

I definitely don't begrudge them from getting into commercials, sponsors, endorsements and side-gigs. The pay scale per fight is a HUGE sliding range depending on who the fighter is, and how many contracts they have left - ranging from something like $6K - $450K per fight. Tito Ortiz makes the most at $450K per fight. Anderson Silva only makes $200K per fight. Some of the top guys do get % of PPV dollars too though and endorsements/sponsors can make for a nice paycheque when you're in the 'elite'.

I heard somewhere, and I could of dreamt this, that fighters like Silva and St. Pierre were making 7 figures per fight. Maybe this was with sponsors... I'll look for the article again... hopefully i wasn't dreaming.

I know GSP definitely gets % of PPV dollars... I'm sure Silva does as well.

Here's a breakdown of the "Top 30" guys salaries from 2011 based on *reported money* (this will depend on number of fights that year, plus bonuses for FOTN etc.). This doesn't include PPV % or sponsorship money though.

Explain to me one thing - why does Tito Ortiz make three times what Silva and GSP reported?

Cause he's Tito! LOL

Well, he's a big PPV draw, I guess he was a big star 'back in the day' in terms of bringing in $ for the organization, so he must have a generous contract at the moment. And I'm pretty sure he fought more times than the other guys last year. I don't get it either to be honest. It seems ridiculous to me. Combine his reported $, his PPV % (which would be huge), sponsorships and his wife Jenna's income from her porn empire and the Ortiz family had a pretty sweet year.

Can you imagine how those earnings are going to skyrocket over the next decade as UFC grows?

Well he was one of the first champions... I remember learning about the sport through the reality show when I lived in the states. Ortiz managed a team and then there was this other veteran (i can't believe I'm forgetting his name - irish dude) they hate each other. They were both responsible for the popularity of the sport today... so it makes sense... They are getting their dividends. I would pay them to.

You can say sweet year again, they must be having a blast in their lives right now.... HA!

I don't think these will grow so much... because they can only fight ever so often.. they do take a beating.

The top fighters will get PAID boxing bucks very soon. But the middle and bottom range will have to live off of 6 figure incomes.... hahaha
