No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:

1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.

5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus.

It's a bug.
After removing the sp3, I ended up not being able to get in after another few boots. I had to reinstall XP Pro for an hour today.

Mental note, never run ms updates ever again. If it aint broke....

Catch 22: If you don't run them, the securities patches, your anti virus software can't protect your computer.

If you update them it can effect w the way your computer runs. Last night I reformatted the entire drive on a friend's computer

Removing all the spywares and viruses. She ignored the upgrade security patches and got infected. There was nothing else I could do to rescue

her Hard drive. Why do people still run Internet Explorer? so many security holes

Nicola I know that feeling all to well. I actually had a hunch when I read that yesterday from you that was going ti happen. Unfortunately a lot of programs and some hardware are starting to ruquire SP3. Like Pam said it is a catch 22 if you don't run them. Ah the joys of the computer age. Too bad MS got so big for themselves taht besides Aplle they really don't have any competition. They really need to have a company come out that can actually run anything on thier OS and humble MS into respecting its cuxtomers more. Yeah right.

Hello All and please pardon the 'commercial', but since I bought an Apple computer 2 years ago I have never had to install spyware, download service pack updates or perform any kind of system maintenance. Because I am so computer 'illiterate', I used to have to beg friends to help me perform those duties for me, - or pay someone. I am constantly amazed at the speed and ease of use of my machine. I'm not a member of the Apple 'cult', but I'd be happy to answer anybody's questions to the best of my ability.

Cheers.
I'm starting to like Mac's more and more Oberon. A friend has a top of the range powerbook and it is very fast.

We are given laptop pc's for work though, and other than designers, nobody uses macs.

It was windows that failed Pam. The antivirus program is a separate issue and updates daily anyway. So I shouldn't really have touched the system at all LOL.
Well Nicola you make some good points. As far as the virus programs I and a few of my computer buddies have always said that has to be one of the biggest scams going I mean what is the real purpose for someone to constantly write viruses? If you ask me it is the companies like Norton and McAfee that keep writing them otherwise if they did away with all viruses why would they need to stay in business? Just my humble opinion. I have to admit I have toyed with getting a mac myself a couple times but the tinkering side of me says no what fun is that having something that works all the time? LOL
But you think in 20 plus years Microsoft would have a product that just works.
I understand the prevalence of Windows Nicola - though you can always run Windows on a mac - but free from work is hard to compete with.

And bikebum 1975, you're right. The tinkering side of you would be frustrated. My friend was like that. He'd pretty well rebuilt his Windows based machine. And they're still not good for gaming. Mac users tend to tinker more with software - movie making and music-kind of thing.

They are fun, though. Next time you're in a mall with an Apple store, play with one is my suggestion.

End of commercial, - thanks for listening.
I'll always be a PC fan. Just the way I am. I understand them and that's good enough for me.
I use SP2, was thinking about SP3, but I'm glad I read your post, Nic. I'm sticking with what I've got and I'm happy with it.
Pam, you confused Windows Update with your antivirus program's signature file updates. Do without the Windows one, but always get the other one.
Yep I'm with you Rocco I learned how to use a Windows system and it works for me(most of the time).
Jake got me a new Mack book. I use MS office for mac, completely compatible with any windows PC

I can partition the drive and run windows xp in native time, using any windows program , On the internet side I stay in OSX operating system no viruses
no need for anti virus software either. sure they cost more but so does quality. The Intel macs offer the best of both worlds or operating environments.

Someone else told me they use a Mac with some kind of Windows emulation to run programs and it works really well.
I looked into it before Rocco, from my limited understanding of these things, you have to boot up in a different operating system depending on what tasks you want to perform.

I would guess that opens up macs to the same virus threats as a normal pc if you used it mainly for Windows applications?
Yep Nicola you have to have Windows on a seperate partion on the hard drive and you do have to boot into windows or mac but that could open up a whole new can of worms. I think I'll stick with my PC I allready know how to screw those up. LOL
You can run Windows in Bootcamp on a mac and boot up in either OS, -
or you can run Windows with a software program like 'Parallels' and have both open at once, -
even drag and drop from Windows to Mac.
Yes, Windows needs anti-virus (comes with Parallels):

OR you can run Windows Office for Mac, surf with Firefox, use MSN and Messenger, even Google's Picasa 3 for photos.

I'm sure Pam 111 could explain better than I.
Parallels, by Yes

When you've tried most everything and nothing's taking you higher
When you've come to realise, you've been playing with fire
Hear me when I say to you, it's really down to your heart.

It's the beginning of a new love in sight
You've got the way to make it all happen
Set it spinning turning roundabout
Create a new dimension
When we are winning we can stop and shout
Making love towards perfection.

I've been all around the world and seen so many faces
Young and old, a story told, filling in my spaces
Now without a trace of doubt, I feel it every hour.

It's the beginning of a new love inside
Could be an ever opening flower
No hesitation when we're all about
To build a shining tower
No explanations, need to work it out
You know we've got the power.

Parallel our sights
And we will find that we need to be where we belong
Parallel our heights
Display our rights and wrongs, and always keep it STRONG.

It's the beginning of a new love in sight
Could be an ever opening flower
No explanations, need to work it out
You know we've got the power

It's the beginning of a new love inside
You've got the way to make it all happen

Making love towards perfection.

OK, back to the subject.
Nice one Zaf. It isn't a question of if as much as when it will happen. LOL
Yep maybe now the MAC users will keep quiet at least for a while.
Pardon me.
I thought you were complaining about Windows.

BTW, that story was disproved months ago.

Uh, Cheers.
No computer is safe from hard drive failure or mechanical malfunctions. Backup is just as important either platforms you use

Macs OSX operating system no exe file can be opened to unleash a virus attack It has a unique permissions setup that to launch that said virus
which btw was proven a hoax, you will be immediately asked for your administrative account name and password before installing any program.

It is like the red flag windows users wished they had, Before that virus is unleashed. The major problem malwares and viruses writers have with
the OSX environment, is getting pass the permissions issues. Last count Windows had over 250 k security holes to exploit.

I'm not trying to be smug here, my computer is better than yours, my main computer is a 2002 Power mac , still running fast and reliable.

All my pc that old are long gone. My Guy Jake and I, volunteer and help our senior citizens with their computer problems. We see a fair share of virus removal

At home we would rather not to have to deal with those issues, That is why we made the switch to the Macs. I keep a windows computer for a few programs,
I run in windows operating system. Last night a woman gave us a Sony cam because she could not download pictures in Vista plugged into my old powermac
using Imovie and immediately off and running. There are no drivers for this camera for Vista yet. Some scanners and printers also have the same support driverers
issues.
PC's keep me employed. An if you want to compare the safest of all Pam go Linux.

Same here ghostwriter I also work on them for a living
heh heh....

"Love all, trust a few, and do wrong to none."
That was awsome Zaf!!!! LOL
Let me see if I've got this straight...
you invite people to participate on this Forum, -
but when they present an opinion different than your own,
you tell them they should 'shut up'.

This thread was started with a post complaining about Windows.
In as 'un-smug' a way as possible, I suggested there was an alternative.
I was trying to be helpful.
I had no idea I was stirring up such a virulent prejudice.
You people do understand that what you are identifying with so strongly
and defending as if you had been attacked, -
is a piece of corporate software, a brand, - a logo.
.....What's the matter, did you run out of OTHER things to be prejudiced about?

If you prefer Windows and PCs to OSX and Macs, fine.
But - to misquote you, bikebum1975 - don't complain about them.

And, as a moderator, Zafia, I thought you would be more responsible than to post disproved rumours.

As far as I'm concerned, you people owe me an apology.
