Sitting versus Sat

There's getting it right all the time, and there's artistic licence. My English teacher told me:

1) never start a sentence with "But", "Because" or "And". But I do it if the story warrants it. And if it serves a purpose. Because I can.
2) sentences must contain a subject and a verb. Piffle.
3) always separate a list of exciting dramatic words with a comma, and never put a comma before the final 'and' in a list.

All three of the above demonstrations are grammatically borderline incorrect, depending on who you ask. But only purists would argue they're "wrong". They serve a stylistic purpose. And repetition without commas, or staccato sentences, can add drama when used sparingly.

The only so-called 'rule' I try not to break (except in speech, where it's acceptable and pretty much anything goes) is to end a sentence with a preposition. Everything else is up for grabs, imo, as a stylistic choice.

Would I use 'sat' instead of 'sitting' as Danielle menioned in the OP? Probably not, because when read aloud it doesn't flow as well. But I can bet I've used lie and lay wrong at some point.

Sorry, boss

Will try and learn the difference before collaborating again.

Beyond that little highlight, I'm not going to argue the toss.

What I will say is thank you, just today I have been re-reading my latest drivel and have caught a few 'sat's sitting where the shouldn't.
Just keeping these little things in mind is useful.

Thank you, you're welcome.

After Danielle kindly brought this issue to light, I decided to spend time looking at other gaffs Like most Irishmen, I sometimes write 'I will be there,' when it should be 'I shall be there,' and so on.

I doubt many mods would reject a story because of the misuse of the modal verbs will and shall.

However, it is important to use the correct one, if using the imperative mood. 'You shall go to the ball!"

I rather like grammologist or maybe grammographer?

Though it's the better sounding name, grammologists are just pseudo-linguists. The correct term is of course grammonomer.

===  Not ALL LIVES MATTER until BLACK LIVES MATTER  ===

I've just found this example of a narrator using "sat" throughout their novel — and the author, Zadie Smith, isn't even from the north of England. The book is, White Teeth winner of the Whitbread First Novel award. This is an example of an author using a fictional voice that trumps grammatical niceties. My-oh-my! How did her editors allow this travesty to come about?

Have a look at the very first paragraph of the text via the "Look inside" facility on Amazon.

And if you look at the novel via Google Books — use "sat" as a keyword — you will she uses the word throughout.

Another example of our changing language. Probably the most jarring example so far. I mean, you can expect it to creep into journalism, but contemporary literary fiction. Wow!

But it isn't really that, is it? It's just a book written in the authentic voice of a given character, as I tied to argue in my initial response to Danielle's post.

LOL! I have to admit I've seen a few 'sats' sat in a spot in your stories where it should be sitting instead of sat (like to see you make sense of THAT!). Seen it with a few Brit writers. I assumed it's just your way, like all those wasted and abused u's.
