Create your own PDF files. Also as I understand it the latest version of MS Word can create PDF files as well. OpenOffice has always had this capability. Then the issue just becomes distribution. But being able to pay for a downloadable set of stories to carry on your e-reader would be convenient. Want them in a different e-reader format? Then just convert them with Calibre. All is free and open source software.

And I must be the only person who thinks eReaders are nice. The newer Kindle has a fantastic battery life, upwards of two weeks if you turn off the wifi, under moderate use. But it does have features like a backlight that will shorten that life. So a battery running out on you would only happen if you didn't plan ahead. And you can carry around a fairly large amount of content.

If you wish to take this route then you should take a look at the Creative Commons licenses. They work well for me. I don't think I'll ever make any money off of what I write. So releasing what I write under a copyleft license allows me to keep some rights while granting readers the ability to use in nearly any setting they wish. My copyright notice points to a Creative Commons license.
