that's a weird suggestion for a PRIZE smh. sometimes i wonder about you. *purrs*

Ah, a PRIZE! Now I get it.

First prize should be watching a horror movie with you and Vanessa via Zoom. Or, if 2 hours is too long a commitment, a drink. Or if 30 minutes is too long a commitment, a joint.

LJ is doing much better. We went shopping at Costco. Now back home. I am trying to write, but keep fucking around on the internet instead. Write , dammit!

Drinks're on me. And by me I mean Hannah. And by Hannah I mean Mike.

A cold beer please. *purrs*

fyi, i am going to be hosting a writing challenge when the current comp closes. i'll give more details as the date gets closer. there won't be badges or prize money, but there will be a prize of sorts - i have one in mind, but i'm open to suggestions, too, so if you have any SERIOUS ones (yes, i am looking at you, Verbal) please pass them on.

it will be something to do while waiting for the next comp - it will be in the flash fiction category, so 101 - 1000 words, and it should be something fun and different for those who like to think outside the box. smile

Why you gotta be h8in?

I have a serious suggestion, actually: the story has to have a song in it. Like, a song on the radio in the background. Or maybe a story that plays out the plot of a song.

Anyway.

LJ doesn't feel well. sad She's napping upstairs, I am laid out on the downstairs couch. Just finished my writing for the day.

I wrote a micro for the comp, but it kinda sucks, so I won't be submitting. I cannot get my head around how to write a micro, There just aren't enough WORDS! I run out way too soon. Guess I'm too, um, verbal.

So glad to hear about your Mom Sara. Continuing good wishes. And HEY, there might be baseball in a few weeks!

Frikkin ouch, Grace! We have our share of black widows out here. No one has died from a bite in like 50 years here, but I hear they hurt like fuck! Sounds like a job for Dr. Jack Daniel's. Have a shot on me.

A cold beer would be perfect, barkeep.

Words for which you wish there were more synonyms.

My vote would go for KISS ~ writing these sexy stories I am often finding myself wishing there were more words for kissing.

SMOOCH is nice but not very sensual, PECK is too prudish, SNOG is a bit too comical to convey tenderness (and I'm not sure American readers are familiar with snogging).

I'd like to hear any other writer's thoughts about words they have to repeat time and time again.

If you describe kissing rather than just say kissing, you can avoid the word ("She pressed her lips against his neck, her teeth nipping at his skin."). Same with fucking, licking, sucking, yadayadayada.

That said, I ask my phone for synonyms like every ten minutes when I'm writing.
According to LJ's complex calculations, today is the kitties' first birthday! Happy birthday, Mimi Rose Howard and David Foster Wallace!

My boss gave me (and everyone in our fairly small department) a free day off! I have a three day weekend this weekend already, and so just might take a three day weekend next week!

No real plans. I might try to drag LJ into the mountains this weekend, just to drive around, maybe hike a bit. She is more of a homebody than I, but three days inside might be a bit too much of a good thing.

Friends is back on TV in 5 days!

Baseball might be six weeks away!

Life is returning!

Iced tea, please. I like my tea how I like my women: strong and sweet. smile
Leftover half a burrito from Chipotles. It was good.

A large sweet tea pretty please
It's a beautiful day here

The latest update on my momma... She's alert, did a nuclear test on her heart muscle when results are back they will call with them. She is breathing on her own and sounds good on the phone.
Thank you for all the prayers and good vibes. We still have a long way to go so please keep them coming*

I'm so blessed to have you all in my life. I'm gonna try to get some reading and writing done.

Stay safe everyone

Good vibes headed your way. REALLY glad she is breathing on her own. My Dad on a ventilator was hard to watch.

Not much happening here. Three day weekend beckons. LJ has decided the kitties' (did I do the plural/possessive right?) birthdays are May 23rd, so we will celebrate that. About to put out Serious Moonlight: the Collection, so I will be working on that. Also, gonna self publish a short story that I can't sell to save my life. AND...my favorite place to write is LJ's insanely comfortable couch, so it's a win-win!

Köffee would be lovely.
We've been seriously binge-ing Justified lately (yeah, I know I'm very late to the party). Great dialogue, great performances.

I've also been showing my youngest daughter some of my fave movies, since it's her last year before adulthood. Watched Slumdog Millionaire this week and had forgotten what a gem it is.

Every 90's kids dream ( how many monkey movies did the 90s have? )

Also apparently long ago you could order monkey's via old comic book ads

WE DID THIS!!! When I was a little kid we ordered a monkey from the back of Boy's Life (relax, it's a scouting magazine), from an ad that looked very much like this! We had him for several months. My Dad built a huge cage for him. He was awesome, but it could not have been a healthy set-up for him. After he bit my sister we gave him to a pet store.

I teach in a couple hours. After that my work life should finally calm a little. SO. SICK. OF. ZOOM.

I agree whole-heartedly with Larry that the micro comp is opening up writing and the comps to a whole new group of folks here. It's cool.

Thanks for the set-up, Curvy. I'd love a last cup of coffee.

A large tailgater sounds good right about now
It's been a hell of a day emotionally

My sweet strong momma was admitted into the hospital last night then it all went downhill from there.. She has so many medical issues that her heart went bonkers. So they took a look to see what was causing the problem and so she is sedated for the time being and tomorrow they will discuss open heart surgery to remove all the blockage. Being away from home sucks Major balls!
My sisters husband is a rock star for sure he is dealing with the doctors and then explaining it all to my sister since she is a basket case and he is keeping me in the loop
So things are looking Better than they did at 7am .

Scott thanks for the baby gorillas I really needed that cute picture

Oh is there any treats left?

Stay safe everyone and don't forget to tell people you love them

I hope your sweet strong mama is doing okay at the hospital. I surely agree to never forget to tell people you love them.
Quote by browncoffee
Lemönade and vodka and cake for everyone!

Edit: can this still go on Mike's tab or am I too late?

Thanks for the treats, Ms. Flick! And congrats again on the win!

Mike's tab is a little like the federal deficit. The debt is so great it's become an abstraction, never to be paid. So go right ahaed!

So, anyway, I made my first weed purchase post-corona virus just now. It was weird, I went online to order it, they texted back when it would be ready, and it comes in little sealed packs now, not the regular plastic bottles. Fast and easy but weird. MY POINT, HOWEVER: I apparently have 150 loyalty "points" at the store, and I was reading through what I can get, and one of the things offered was a "Foria Explore single pack." Which is a marijuana suppository specifically designed with anal sex in mind, to help relax muscles and relieve pain. Better living through chemistry, I guess!

Marijuana suppositories. Huh. It's a Brave New World.

One of them vodka'ed up lemonades of Hannnah's please.

This made me retch, but I loved it. Thanks for posting ❤?

And now I need a strong drink..

Yeah, "Poppies got his tongue" is a pretty chilling line. My idea was that he discovered a tooth in the soil and realized they'd be devoured seconds before cumming. But graphic is probably better, with only a 100 words to use. I have NO idea how to write a good micro. I think you have to write like 20 just to blow out the pipes and get rid of all the goofy ideas first.

Tried to do therapy via laptop today, but tech problems intervened. Sigh. I was looking forward to it. Anyone wanna be my ad hoc therapist today?

Not much going on here. I teach tomorrow, after that work should be much more chill - it's really been kicking my ass these days.

So fucking sick of Zoom. On it for a work meeting yesterday, a writer's meeting last night, a Canva tutorial later this afternoon, and teaching on it tomorrow. Oh well, att least I have a three day weekend in which I can communicate FACE TO FRIKKIN FACE with LJ.

Friends is back on TV (HBO) in a week. Maybe baseball in a month and a half. Things will get better, right?

Köffee please.

Okay, I keep hearing raves about this but carnivorous zombies happens to be the one horror sub-genre whose appeal completely escapes me for the most part. I like Romero's original Living Dead movies but no others have really resonated so I largely avoid them now. So is this one of the rare ones I should bother with?

If you are not a big fan I don't think this would be the pic. Best zombie movies I've seen are 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Shaun of the Dead too, though that's certainly a very different take.

Night of the Living Dead is still the best ever.

And the best zombie book is World War Z. AWFUL movie, but the Max Brook (Mel Brook's son) book is not only excellent, it's scientifically accurate. Probsbly a perfect read for this day and age.

I am on a Zoom call while typing this. Hope they won't see the page I am on.

BEER!!!

I should have gone carnivorous poppy plants devouring and ingesting another field-fornicating couple.

You will be unsurprised to learn I already thought of that story idea, albeit with carnivorous, psychedelic poppies and a talking typewriter.

Congrats on the lovely and talented Hannah, for nabbing first place in the comp. Have a lemonade on me. I'll sip a köffee at the table with you.

Congrats as well on all the other winners and those who placed. A really tough crowded field.

Saw two foreign horror movies with LJ, both excellent. Train to Busan (S Korea, zombies) and The Tagalong (Taiwan, ghost).

Happy Monday all!
Thanks for those amazing looking donuts, Fuzz! And for the set-up, Tonya.

Date night tonight, which mean absolutely frikkin zilch these days...EXCEPT...I am finally going to get a haircut today! I am looking pretty shaggy.

My county petitioned the state to open up early, because our infection rate is lower than the rest of the state. So maybe restaurants and movies soon! I am seriously missing both.

Just might drive into the mountains this weekend. Just gotta convince LJ first.

I hope everyone is well.

Köffee please.
Write. It's keeping me going these days. And gives me a productive place to put my darker thoughts.

Sinister scared me the first time I watched it, Rach looked at the trailer for it the other day and just the trailer made her nervous lol
but I actually love it smile the second one I enjoyed also but not quite as much
The first time I watched the first one I was alone in my very haunted apartment ( long story ) and my cat kept fucking grabbing my hair and biting my feet which kept startling me.
But I have a soft spot in my heart for movies about writers so :)

Aw it was just fuckin cereal? I was feeling left out for nothing.

coffee please. I am going to force myself to do something productive anything..anything at all lol
Also I ordered a new desk and I am super excited!

Just fuckin cereal, Nessa. Sorrt. Although I tell you what, my work day is slow, I will set out a REAL bowl for you and I and Rache and Tam (and anyone else who'd like to partake). Here, let's step out into the alley so as to not flaunt our flagrent law-breaking.

I read last week that smoking a joint is something that should be done in a social context, like during a Zoom call, to stave off isolation. Maybe we should schedule a Zoom joint session. We all know each other's faces now!

Started Train to Busan last night. How have I never seen this movie!? It was hard to turn off half-way through. Funny and gripping and scary.

One thing that would really help would be to get it on the front page in some form. I get why Nic won't mix them in with the regular stories. They would quickly swamp the list given how fast some can bash them out. But on a separate tab, like she did with poetry, would work. I just worry that it isn't going to attract a lot of casual traffic otherwise, just writers of micro commenting and voting on other writers of micro.

Deleted a story yesterday. It's one of those ones that keeps coming back on me like a bad chili and I know I will somehow make it work someday but this time doesn't seem to be it. Probably do another micro or two before I attempt a regular story again but we shall see.

Tea, black, with a twist of lime.

Yeah, this all makes sense. Someone once told me that Flash fiction was mostly writers writing for other writers, and I think that''s doubly true for micro. And they would swamp everything else here - they are seemingly fast and easy to write. I think they are crazy difficult to do well; I've written two now for Lush and haven't really hit the nail on the head yet.

Got my work performance evaluation this morning. It went really well. And despite the state budget being hit HARD next year, my job is safe. Whew.

Not much else. Knee deep in writing: finishing a ghost story, working on a book cover for another story, trying to get a newsletter landing page set up through Mailchimp.

I hope everyone is doing well in these odd and interesting times.

Köffee please!

Thank you Curvy
Ping now I've got the Rocky theme stuck in my head
Carl where have you been? I've missed you!!

Hey Verbs ? watch any good movies lately?

Coffee please, I feel like I got 0 sleep.

Let's see, good movies.... No, not so much. I remembered Exorcist III as being surprisingly good, given the title, but except for one great scary camera shot, it was goofy. Imaginary Friend was AWFUL. Hide was okay. I watched Airplane! with my youngest daughter and we both laughed way too much.

We just started watching the series Justified. WAY later to the party, but it's really good. And based on characters created by my fave writer, and easily the most influential to me: Elmore Leonard.

So the last good horror movie stands at Sinister (and Sinister II).

And when I said split a bowl with Rache and Tam yesterday, I meant split a bowl of cereal!!! Like, as in Rice Chex. What a bunch of frikkin potheads in this dive.

Bill, the NGDB are a national treasure.

Iced tea, please.
Thanks for the set-up, Curvy.

Hey all.

Work is calm, baseball season is on its way, it's Spring, and I have the love of a good woman. What's to complain about?

Since Fuzz is on the GO GO GO and left no donuts or tunes, I will put a quarter in the juke. Will the Circle Be Unbroken, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou, Bela Fleck, and about a million other country and bluegrass greats.

Yeah, I got those same four badges this morning! Not a big badge guy, but thanks, Lush!

Morning tea, please. Orange pekoe with a lemon wedge.

And here's some wake up music. As in "knock you off the bed and get your head banging". Walk Off the Earth are one of my favorite current bands. They started out in Burlington, Canada, not far from Hamilton where I was based in the nineties. And while they are maybe best known for quirky pop, they can rock out, as they do here on their visit to Sydney, Australia in January. The legendary opening riff of Thunderstruck on a uke? Hell, yes!

Wow, that really was does rock! Great opening uke riff, and she can really belt it out!

Sara, looks like we might be getting baseball in a couple months! I hope neither side gets too greedy and scotches the deal when the owners present the plan to the players today.

Ah, what else? I snuck in an extra hour of sleep before work today. Figured it was a calm day, I won't get caught. And I didn't! DON'T TELL MY BOSS!!!

Köffee please!

season 3 has already started, you know. and they ended it like that cause they didn't know if they were getting renewed at the time they shot it.

ALL THE MORE REASON to come up with an actual ending! I'll get to season three when it hits Hulu.

Just started Justified. Late to the party, but an excellent show.

I'm done with köffee, but I'll split a quick bowl with Rache.

Good to have you back, Carl!

Ah, Mondays. Work has slowed, at least. I just made my youngest do her homework (from me, nor school): write 5 sentences about someone's smile, and use at least one simile. I make her write 5 sentences a day.

Had an excellent lazy weekend with LJ. FINALLY finished Killing Eve season two and felt a bit ripped off by the cliffhanger. At least ATTEMPT an ending.

I will admit the stay-in-place thing is getting to me. I work from home so I didn't get too bothered at the beginning. But I need a real date, out of the house, dinner and a play, or at least a movie.

I should be writing THE END on a new ghost story today or tomorrow. Still needs a gob of editing.

One last cup of coffee, please.

My mom passed away while I was on my involuntary, month-long furlough. Thanks to all of you Rump-Humpers that wondered aloud about me. I eye-balled the bar a few times. I’m certainly not the only one who has been affected by the darker side of life’s grand experiment. Hugs to all. Gill. Tonya. Penman. The rest of you misfits. Except Verbs. He’s kinda handsy when he gets close. Grabbing junk he shouldn’t. Pocket full of tentacles poking one's ribs. Unpleasant at best. And his Yosemite Sam whiskers kinda tickle the inner thighs.

***

Mixed feelings. Mixed blessing. Ours was a tumultuous relationship, but cancer’s pain spares no one and no one deserves its trauma. She did get to meet her grandchildren, which was good, but sadly, they soon learned why they had not previously met her, and that is bad.

“Dad, why doesn’t she ever say thank you for all the stuff you are doing for her?”

“Dad, why does she say those mean and nasty things to you, and why does she treat you so poorly?”

In those few innocent but loaded questions (there were more), I knew that estrangement (thrice times) was the correct decision. I had learned how not to parent from my parent’s parenting, and that vindicated decision to keep my kids away has resulted in two spectacularly observant, intelligent, respectful, sympathetic, and empathetic little human beings. It always begins and ends with not fear, but respect. Cracking wise and laughing our assess off helps too.

***

I can't fucking believe today is Mother's Day.

Ah, Ping, I feel for you. The universe has a crazy sense of irony, doesn't it? Mother's Day. The death of someone you had a simple, loving relationship with is so much easier than the passing of someone who you had a fraught one with.

Truly the work of a Good Man for you to be by her side as she passed. That moment of passing is a powerful, soul-searing moment, and it leaves you forever changed. Bless you for being a witness to that moment for her. It lent her dignity and respect, whether she deserved it or not. She probably did. Most people do.

And I have had to answer those tough questions from my kids too, in my case about the bio-parents. You deserve some blessings as well for manning up and as answering honestly and kindly. And for teaching them that jokes are an excellent defense mechanism, as well as a way to let in the light in. And God knows we all need as much light as we can get in the benighted times.

Good to have you back, friend. A limoncello (sp?) for Ping, on me,

I actually have beer in the fridge, a rarity for me, so crack me open an Avalanche, if you don't mind.

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms, step-Moms, cool aunts, fun sisters, single Dads having to play both roles, and everyone else who keeps the world turning.

My first attempt at microfiction (93 steamy words) is up. techgoddess has already partaken of some "ice cream". How about the rest of you?

TGIF, y'all. Let's have a Canadian Club on the rocks over here.

Scratch that, just looked up "Black Velvet". I'm intrigued, though God knows what passes for champagne around this joint.

My sister LOVED this song.

My boss just emailed and said it's been a killer month SOOOO... I should take the rest of the day off. Only a couple hours left in the workday, but I'll take what I can get.

How about a lite beer before I head over to meet LJ?

Good morning and happy Friyay. Big Bertha has been de-sludged (saved for Carl), rinsed and filled with her caffeinated greatness. The kettle is on for hot tea and cocoa. I've gathered up the mugs and glasses from yesterday and gave them a quick rinse.

It's getting cooler here in Jersey even with a chance of a little snow. Not too much going on here. Nothing special going on for the weekend. I'm venturing out to the store early this morning to stock up for awhile. Hopefully not many people will be out.

Jeff I thought of you when we showed my daughter her first "scary" movie. It was classic wolfman. She was a little scared at a few parts but overall liked it. She wants to watch Christine but I'm not too sure about that.

Now coffee is ready and the water is hot. What can I get for you?

When the girls first got into horror movies we started Christine but stopped the movie early on - I don't remember exactly what but there is an early scene we thought inappropriate for kids. Checkout the very beginning first.

I'll try to breathe a little fresh air into Date Night tonight. Maybe a fresh new restaurant we've not done take-out with yet. Maybe I'll cook. Man, I am jonsing to go out for a movie or a play.

Work is FINALLY slowing. Wrote the big denoument of a ghost story last night. Finish the thing off this weekend and then a LOT of rewriting. I really, really suck at plotting, and there are several plotholes.

Okay. Off to the salt mines.

Köffee please (the "Kö" is for Hannah).
