I gobbled down a BUNCH of micro-fictions last night. I may do the same tonight. It's encouraging how many different takes there have been on solving that particular puzzle. It's hard (heh): you've really gotta narrow your focus way down to keep it in 100 words.

I feel for the mods - there are a ton of micro entries, and while they are short, I bet there is a giant backlog.

Work continues to keep me busy. Writing after work continues to go...well, not quickly, but consistently. I am getting better about writing every day lately.

Hope everyone is well. Coffee please!

Bad Verbal!

Oooh, I liking this category more and more... smile
I just submitted. No photo. Is that a requirement?

Bill, I think the only requirement IS 100 words or less. And maybe the picture. No minimum, just don't yank the mod's chains (unless they like that).
Thanks for the set-up, Curvy T Unquenchable!

Tonya, your littley sounds like a delight. An occasionally exhausting delight, but a delight nonetheless. Both my girls were hyper-verbal at that age. And I am hyper-verbal at all ages. I'm Verbal!

I wrote a micro-fiction last night! I thought there was a contest, but I see it is merely a new category. Alas. Gotta pay a little more attention to threads other than this one, clearly.

I'll submit when I'm done obsessing over the last two sentences. Ha! We'll see how long that takes. Mirco fiction is frikkin hard! Heh.

Anyone know if I can use a phone number as a title? Just numbers and dashes, no words?

Coffee me please!

EDIT: Mine's up. So to speak. smile

I'm assuming you are talking about your competition entry?

When competitions finish, I go through every story and remove all "down votes" on each story from other entrants (anything other than a "5").

One contestant (who shall remain nameless) voted every one of the other stories in the latest competition, a "3" or a "4", hoping to pull down their average scores. Little did they realise I can see all the votes and will forever have a black mark against their name!

In your case, 3 of your fellow writers with comp entries voted your story down. Those were removed.

It's a pity I have to waste half a day doing so when competitions close off, but it's a necessary task when there's foul play at hand.

Call it old fashioned professionalism that I won't allow it to happen here.

Three writers!? That's messed up. I, like Scott, can't imagine why anyone would do this. Pretty easy to get caught, and if you didn't get caught and actually won, wouldn't it tarnish any sense of winning in your mind?

EDIT: That said, I hope ALL votes under 5 aren't being removed - but only the serial low voters who are trying to play unfairly. I usually give out 5s, but want the option to score how I feel, and think others should too.

I'm getting a steampunk/lovecraft vibe from that cover. If hero doesn't beat back a tentacle horror with a magical rifle made of brass and cherry-wood, I'll be disappointed.

No tentacles yet, but I'm hopeful. smile Very much a Lovecraft "Color Out of Space" vibe going on. Really good book so far (fair warning, I'm biased, I know the writer).
Hey all.

I may step up and hit this micro-fiction thing. I need an idea first. Or more specifically a non-horror idea.

Not much else going on. Gorgeous near-summer day. Went to the dentist, got a crown put on painlessly! So there's that.

Saw two good horror movies this weekend, Sinister and Sinister II (evil kids freak me out). And an awful one, Imaginary Friend, that was like a bad Lifetime movie.

I'd love one last cup of coffee please.
The House Without a Summer. Horror novel based on the 1816 real life year without a summer.

Question if I may. How can a story lose votes? I had a story published that garnered 60 votes. I just noticed it is down to 57. Granted, in the scheme of things, 3 votes doesn't matter. But really curious on the "how." I haven't seen anything that allows a voter to rescind their vote. Perhaps a person who casts a vote has their vote removed from the story total if they?delete their Lush account? Just kind of bugging me although I know it shouldn't.

I'm pretty sure it only happens when they delete their account.

"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is a really good movie.

It's based on a book that is also apparently very good.

Just saw that. It really is disturbing. I had to watch Seinfeld afterward as a palate cleanser.

I agree, I Spit On Your Grave was pretty disturbing.

I once saw a crazy movie called Blood Sucking Freaks that was very frikkin disturbing. I'd say it wins the prize.

Tea, please.

Hey Hannah! The Big K! The Flick-ster! We just missed each other! May I buy you another tea?

It's either drink tequila or strangle the neighbors

Drink tequila AND strangle the neighbors! It's a party! So glad to hear your grandson decorates his room with Godzilla. Good kid!

So sorry about your loss, Tonya. Those kids are so young - it breaks my heart.

It's Monday, and work is still annoyingly busy, but drama at home has subsided, and writing is going well. So I'll not complain.

Beer for everyone!
Debate, drama and lit mag nerd. Though I did date the occasional cheerleader.

The Occasional Cheerleader would be a great title of a book.
Hope everyone is well.

Lazy Saturday afternoon. My writers group is having a Zoom Q&A with an ex-FBI killer profiler, LJ and I are listening to him while I write and she works on a puzzle game.

We may actually leave the house, but it hasn't happened yet, and I will be unsurprised if we don't move. Dinner for tonight is Thai food leftovers, so we are good to go there. FB has a great thread about take-out/delivery food in the area who are active during the 'rona lockdown - really helpful resource.

Anyway. A beer on this warm afternoon would hit the spot. A drink for Grace and Willum and Old Scott and Bill, if any of them are still around.

Hannah's story is terrific, folks, and she could use some support (only 8 votes after I voted). It's her first story here since last August and it's a beauty so give it a read and some love.

https://www.lushstories.com/stories/masturbation/-promises-.aspx

And there's new Wilful in the comp, too. Another Lush favorite who's been scarce of late.

https://www.lushstories.com/stories/masturbation/-mind-fuck-.aspx

OMG! Two amazing writers, both unseen of late, enter the comp! I will most def check out these too.

Ice water please.

It's me and I'm on Lush again!

The move has been accomplished. All is as usual in the immediate post-move madness moment.

Since Scott's buying, who the hell wants a drink?

Glad to see you back! Glad to see you and Mrs. Rump have been reunited!

So I woke up this morning, got the coffee-maker going, checked my work email. I went back to the coffee-maker, poured myself a cup of...hot water. I then put COFFEE into the coffee-maker, added water all over again, and made coffee using actual coffee.

A GORGEOUS day out there. Since Sara tends to share our weather, perhaps she is having a gorgeous day as well, on her little mountain. Supposed to be a gorgeous weekend too. Gonna try to whisk LJ out into the mountains at some point.

Coffee would be a goodness, as Bill says.

Dropping a quarter into the juke box. Where's Carl these days? I swear the bar-flies here are dropping like, well, flies. Anyway, this song is for you, Layla.

This morning I got the bright idea that I would throw together a social distancing Cinco de Mayo dinner for the handful of people in our building. Then I went on Amazon and discovered that even with Prime, I couldn't get the party supplies until May 8. Well hell, it's not called Ocho de Mayo! I may see if Dollar General has anything when I go for allergy shots tomorrow. I'm sort of the cruise director here with our little band of misfits that have been sheltering in place and social distancing in a building made for MANY more people. I invited them to the adult game of keep away in the pool later. We have 3 tiki hut style tables in the pool area. They are FAR apart. Perfect for our 3 families. I just keep doing whatever I can to make life feel more normal for my disabled brother and I am grateful that these two couples have been willing to social distance with us to help me create the illusion of some semblance of normalcy.

Have a safe and healthy Thursday!

That's too cool, both the social distanced hangout with friends, and the semblance of normalcy for your brother.

Presentation went well yesterday, so I am having a rather relaxed day after a couple weeks of hectic revisions that have to be approved by about a million people. I have another one next week, but we already have all the kinks worked out. Heh.

I've read about a third of the comp stories, and plan to go in for one more dip. Serious field of competitors.

My daughter is doing fine. I really do appreciate the concern.

And I am having an uncharacteristically pleasant day!

Coming down the home stretch of a new story: a ghost, a graveyard, a tombstone effigy called the Gray Angel, a little Baptist church, a pregnant girl, and kids telling ghost stories in the shadow of the church while the parents are inside. I'm psyched.

Hope everyone is well. Hope Larry and Ping pop their heads in the door - I'll buy them both a round.

It's just past noon, I can handle one last cuppa joe.
I agree with Bill that Curvy, Tonya and Vanessa is an excellent way to start the day!

Vanessa, 13 years is a long time! Congrats to you and hubby. The anniversary of my engagement to LJ was last month. 3 years ago! We gotta get married soon!

I am doing a presentation in about an hour that I've been stressing about for two weeks. Wish me luck.

My daughter is doing much better. Thank you for your well wishes!

Ice water, please. Gotta start warming up.

YOUR ATTENTION, PLEASE!

The following could be a possible sign the wave of contest entries may be ebbing -- or maybe not.

Like any dutiful Lush contestant, I was replying to my entry's comments when, less than 24-hours after Curvy let it slip onto the list of entries, the poor story rolled off the main page. Short stays on page one aren't that unusual, of course. The odd thing is, imo, my now page two story is still on top of the 'comp' list.

Now feel free to double-check me on this, but the way I'm figgering things, that means there has been no new entries for about 24-hours, give or take some minutes here and/or there.

That is possibly the most irrelevant item to ever disgrace this honky-tonk forum, at least for now. But when it comes to posting irrelevant and often, tasteless news and views,Rumplators are a tireless bunch.

Anyway, who needs a drink?

I'm tempted to enter the comp just to help push the number above 100! For some bizarre reason tracking comp entries is reminding me of tracking Coronavirus cases. This is beginning to fuck with my mind.

My youngest daughter had some terrible news last night. i won't go into details, but throw her a kind thought or prayer. She'll be fine, but she's having a very difficult day.

Me? I'm used to difficult days. They pass: I know that, but she doesn't yet.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Iced tea would be lovely.

These are Black Skimmers:

Those aren't scary at all!

Shiraz in here? Hahahahahahahahahaha! Though Fuzz does keep a bottle of Buffalo Trace in a hidey-hole behind the bar, and I've squeezed my bottle of Bulliet and some green Ny-Quil in there too. If you sneak a bottle of Shiraz in here you can hide it next to our stash.

Speaking of Bulliet, I could use several shots, barkeep. Line em up and keep em coming.

Gill, thinking of you. Feel free to hit my bottle of NyQuil hard. I even left a cocktail umbrella next to it, just for you. smile
Looks like I've got some more reading to do. Our very own Rump's story, Jaymal, and L8LastNight.

I took down Fuck, Marry, Kill because I wanted to try and submit it somewhere (it's been rejected twice already). I was gonna throw out a head's up in advance for any of you who wanted to read it, but figured I was already being kinda selfish in putting it up temporarily, just to get reactions. Anyway, for those of you who read it, thanks!

Gill, my heart is with you. Caring for parents is so hard, and in this current climate has got to be scary and overwhelming. My thoughts are with you.

TG, what is a black skimmer? Sounds ominous.

Not much else. Beautiful, sunny day here. Work is still busy as f.

I'd love some passionfruit cake, Laura, with my coffee. Thanks for the set-up, Bill. Didja ever get Windows 10 up and running?
This is how the Masterrobot thread got started. Just sayin'.

it involved tentacles, btw

Doesn't everything?
Hey all.

Read another handful of comp entries last night. Wow. Really strong field. I've read maybe 30, and have my own fave top five or six, which I won't reveal here. I can't imagine winnowing it down to three. The judges are gonna have a tough choice.

LJ's birthday is today! My birthday present is--and I am not making this up--a fairly stupid but very loving one-man show celebrating her life, which I will perform for her, playing all the characters. It should be fun. I printed a ticket and a program and everything.

She's also getting flowers. I used to bring her flowers every Friday, but stopped when the 'rona hit. So I am making up for lost time with a fairly large bouquet today.

Work continues to be busy a f.

Looking forward to sprite's story.

Coffee please!
Good morning, all!

Thanks for the set-up, Tonya.

Welcome to Rump's, Dave (1OGHMNW). Enjoy your coffee. Hope to see you around here again - I'll buy you a beer.

Looking forward to reading your story, Penman. What a comp!

Nice to see you again, Suzie. Been awhile.

Vanessa, WTF!? Be careful, sneaking around abandoned houses! Were you looking for ghosts?

LJ has a birthday this week! I created most of her present last night - a typically no-shopping-in-the-time-of-corona kind of gift, that should be a big hit if I can get enough practice (hint). My daughter is baking the cake.

Not much else to say. The days are all kinda looking the same. Gotta wake up and get to work. Coffee please.

This Austrian born 20 April got pretty high a few times.

She seems a little, um, extra, as my daughter would say.

Calm down. Smoke a bowl.
Thanks for the set-up, Tonya.

I sweat titles too, Nessa, but you seem to be a ninja at it. Vanessa, Title Ninja!

Not read yours yet, V, but I will. I've read 21, and with another handful to go. There are some wonderful entries.

Anyone know what the most entries for a Lush contest is?

Saw a great movie yesterday on Hulu with LJ. The Lighthouse. By the director who did The VVitch, and it's really got a real VVitchy vibe about it. I don't know if you'd call it a horror movie, but it has several horror elements. Amazing performance by Williem Dafoe, of a character that could have come off as cartoonish by a lesser actor. Trippy stuff, highly recommended.

I miss Ping, that Magnificent bastard!

Coffee would be perfection (obscure Friends reference).

No one's first draft is ever their best, craft takes time and effort. So maybe you'd want to write stoned then edit sober. But if you're editing, what's the point of writing stoned in the first place?

My first drafts suck.

I write sober because I think overall I'm more receptive to the entire range of possibilities. I will often edit stoned once or twice, to allow some interesting word choices or weird sentence structures. But I edit sober like 20 more times after I edit stoned, to make sure what I thought was brilliant while stoned isn't actually kinda stupid when seen sober.

The edit is more important than the first draft.
