Thanks for getting Bertha a-poppin', Curvy.

Welcome, Luca. It's a pretty chill group here. Not the cool kids here so much as The Island of Misfit Toys (that's a reference to an ancient stop-motion Christmas animation here in the states). I don't do emojis either, except for the oldest, dullest emoji around, the humble smiley face - smile - so we should get along just fine.

Layla had her second drive in snowy Colorado weather this weekend. A tiny snow flurry, nothing to be fearful of. I do believe she is acclimating to the wildly unpredicable weather here.

I should have a story up on the site that rhymes with the sound you make when you sneeze.

Köffee please. Luca, Bertha is the ancient mechanical goddess that churns out the think tar-like substance that passes for coffee here. In addition to performing her duty flawlessly for decades, she has been subjected to dirt, maple syrup, medicinal gummi bears and other indecencies in the recent past, and has remained stalwart. She is a role model to us all. A hero for the 21st century.

After informing them what the doctors at the wound care clinic said I expected more support. I didn't get it so I threw a spectacular temper tantrum at midnight when they came in from the workshop after an evening of drinking. They are now sufficiently afraid of me and diligently cleaning today and helping to make lists. Of course, my offspring suggested I text them with what needs to be done. They are in the house but if it gets results I'll try it.

Cheers Everyone!

Way to take control of the holidays, Gill! You You've gotta set out rules and expectations, and kick ass if they don't live up to it. Friends of mine got so sick of Christmas they are all flying to Hawaii and spending it there.

Had an excelent weekend. Hung out in Denver with LJ and friends, found a bottle of Angel's Envy (bourbon) and a bottle of Death's Door (gin) at a fancy liquor store and had ourselves a night. smile

Ping I did not realize bugs was a technical classification - too cool. True Bugs is a pretty good title for a story.

Next round is on me. Pass that bottle of Angel's Envy around.
Morning all.

LJ and I saw a great play last night. It was set in a Chicago bar, and after the play, the audience was invited to come up onto the set and have a drink or two and meet the cast. Really fun night. Talked to the writer for a bit.

I was reminded of a time in my misspent youth when I was a stagehand for the Guthrie theater, and for New Years Eve we rolled a giant round table onto the stage (from the production of A Christmas Carol) and the massive sound system played Grateful Dead and the Allman Bros. A party on a huge stage, all lit up. Lots of beer and illicit substances were consumed. Best New Years ever. So far.

Anyway. Köffêè please.

I'm not posting that awful image again. Here's my favorite Wasp.

And yes, I was lucky it was the small yellow and black ones, which are pretty docile. If they hadn't been relatively chill, I may have needed to break out the signature Wasp smolder and subjugated them to my will.

Gas canisters were easier.

BTW, Red Delusion has provided a nice example for me to hold my story next to (but I'm still gunning for most twisted/feel bad story).

I'm trying to balance the horror and erotic elements just right. Also, it's not a happy story, but I don't want to crush people with bad stuff either. I've got some quips, sarcasm, and even a dad joke in there. All the hits.

What's wrong with me? All my ideas are so twisted. What makes it worse is that even if I start with a clear beginning and ending in mind, I always struggle with the middle.

I have no chill. It's either just horrifically bleak, or threatens to turn into a love story, even when it makes no sense.

Ok, I'm done for the night. I needed some good venting. It's been a rough week. Thanks for the beer, CG. I'll gladly take another for the road.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I am inordinately fond of most insects, including scary ones like spiders (the only insects I kill are flies--annoying--and black widows--deadly). And I think wasps are ASSHOLES! Feel free to hate and kill them. They do make cool nests though. Usually a blast from the hose is enough to destroy a nest and make the wasps run away, I'd be wary of using all that poison.

And though I like to think I am fairly chill in most aspects of my life, I have NO CHILL as a writer, and don't think you should either. Writing should make you irritable, elated, depressed, hopeful, preocupied, yadayadayada, but if you are ever feeling chill about it you should just stop. Take that shit seriously.

As for Red Delusion, it is my favorite story of Ping's (well Vanilla Scream plugged into several of my fantasies, so got pretty high marks too, but for enttirely personal reasons), and a high bar for horror/erotica.

CurvyGee, did you open the flue when you started the fire? How can you be so good at handling Bertha and so inept at fireplaces? You sem like the kinda girl that is competent in all things (dancing, writing, history, proof-reading).

Beer me. The evening commmences in an hour.

Of course. Coffee, tea, either chased with bourbon...

That sounds fun. You can chase me with bourbon anytime. smile

Yes to Amy as well. Let's drink hot beverages and talk baseball!

Think they mean knickers.

I'm so naive. Thought it was a brand name. smile

I am hoping today gets better

I am hoping so too Amelia.

I am looking forward to the work week being over and the weekend beginning.
I have not, but a GF has. Pearls too. Insanely hot, just knowing it is there.

I don't know what a Knix is though. We use glass stuff.
Thanks for getting things running, Bill. I will have a cuppa. Probably won't have that gummi-licious kick Buz had added to it yesterday, but considering I have to work, that is probably a good thing.

Writing block has gone away to wherever it hibernates. I have a 1150 word story to attempt to winnow down to under 1000 over the weekend. Or not.

sprite had a new poem up that is really nice. Or maybe it's not that new, I just noticed it. Regardless, worth a read. EDIT: okay, it's like a month old. But it is still very good (and I generally don't grok poetry).

Tonya, early in the morning to get hit with so much strife, but Lord knows I've ben there. Good luck. Your Secret Sister thing is generous and kind and thoughtful. I hope it is fun.

Date night! Another play, taking place at a bar (!!!), called On Tap. It's a theater we've not been to before. And tomorrow a trip up to Denver!

Layla has loved ones in the path of a very ugly fire in California. It's scary. Keep her in your toughts.

I better be seeing entries from all the regulars here. Or I`ll withhold the maple syrup. Or switch out the beer taps in favour of maple syrup. Best you all get to work. I`ll have an ice cold Canadian beer please. Worked my ass off today.

Write a 5000-ish word story in an 8 week period that contains Thanksgiving, my daughter's birthday and Christmas? Hahahahahahahahaha! I am pretty good at making myself sit down and write, but I ALWAYS shut down between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just too much going on, so I don't even try.

Gill, I get you about Thanksgiving dinner, though I'll only have to cook for 5-6 people. Sounds like you have a lot more negotiating to sit through than I - I make exactly the same thing it exactly the same way every year (okay, I did add brining 5-6 years back) and it's pretty good. I'll have help in the kitchen this year too. smile

Hey, where is Larry these days? Been awhile.

And Sprite, please. What you leave on the cutting room floor is what most of us couldn't summon on our best day.

Safeway Select's finest ale, please.
Yes! It's been awhile. Tea for both of us (too late in the day for coffee).
Quote by curvygalore

Talking of BB, lets get her rinsed out and swirched on and remove all traces of last night's hallucogenic substances while I'm at it!

Hey! That's not fair! Buz and I stuck gummies into every crack and crevice of Bertha we could find, so getting rid of them all could take somme doing. MUCH better than Lyf's maple surple, in my humble opinion.

I am not anti-Prague! Not a Prague h8er! I think it's probably a cool place to set a story. But I've never been there, so I can't write about it. I'm limited to the Southwest (where I live now), the Midwest (where I grew up), and NYC (where I spent much of my mis-spent young adulthood).

The work-week is veering out of control. Not writing horror, not writing erotica, no time to do anything non-essential, until we get to the glorious weekend, where possibility abounds!

Köffee please.
A day off and a cure for writer's block.

Hey Molly!
Ping, you mae your first Bertha urn of coffee! There's a pun in there somewhere involving urn, but I am too tired to tease it out.

Election results were unsuprizing but heartening.

Dead in the water, writing-wise.

Köffee please.

Polls are about to start closing here in the States. Serious drinking is highly recommended. So whadda ya wanna drink?

I am done with work in 9 minutes, and then I am heating up leftovers and settling down for a loooong night of election returns. So yes, drinking would be a fine thing. Burrbin, please.

And let's pray (or do the healing thoughts thing if you are, like me, not religious) for the United States. It's time for a little healing.
I saw a Bob Dylan tribure show at Madison Square Garden that had Tom Petty, George Harrison, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Ron Wood, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Crisssie Hynde, Roger McGuin and like a million other people (including Dylan) (who came on last and was frankly not very good).

God I miss Tom Petty.

Well, this morning has started out in spectacularly shitty fashion.

Glad you are digging Vera Farmiga, Ping. The show is pretty good (that entire marijuana subplot is unnecessay, it's just filler) but Vera is a white hot sexy gem, and one of Norman's girlfriends is pretty hot too. There last season is when they take it to a whole new level.

I LIKE Prague! I am not a hater, and I am only on the "fuck Prague" team iin the sense that I don't want to use it for a setting because I have never been there.

Thanks for setting up Bertha, unquenchable and seriously classy Curvy one. Köffee please.
Gill, it sounds like a wonderful feast and a wonderful day and wonderful memories you are cooking up.

Ping, YMB, yeah Anna Hendricks is pretty cute, but Vera Farminga is crazy HOT. Like, Agent Scully level hot. She reminds me of a certain little fiancé I know.

Curvy and Penman and Julie: I haven't seen most of those movies, but I will try to. Brendan Gleeson is frikkin phenomenal in Mr. Mercedes.

Weekender, I used to love voting in person, but this vote by mail thing is easy, and I have grown lazy.

Hey Sara, hey Hannah!

Bill, pour me a river of bourbon.

I just think about whoever I'm with, I think I'd feel kind of strange thinking of someone else, Plus I like to put focus on the person I'm with and if I think of someone else..then that defeats it.

Yeah, this. I won't say I've never fantasized during sex, but regardless, it's always about the connection with the person I'm with (and I often share the fantasy, so it's all good).

However, I recently did find a show I can't watch. Way, way too uncomfortable. Thanks to Gill, I started watching Bates Motel. I love everything about it. Well written script. Well acted. LOVE Vera (yup, same one from The Conjuring). Young guy and all those naughty high school girls. Plus, the lore of the story, and the fact that I visited the movie set in LA many years ago. All pluses. But it's that damn maternal manipulation. Been there, done that. Too many triggers. Too many mommy issues. Who bloody knew that would knock me off of a show?

A warm glass of milk, please. I'll be the guy in the fetal position, rocking in the corner by the Wurlitzer.

Am I really the first one in to make coffee? Okay, no dirt in Bertha this time, and none of Lyf's maple surple (old Roger Miller line).

I liked Bates Motel too (I have a bit of a thing for Vera F, clearly) (just rewatched Up in the Air to see her again). It's a little uneven, with some wildly unnecessary subplots, but overall it's a good show, and the last season is ocasionally brillant. Though I've always wondered - it's not a prequel (set in the wrong time), not a sequel. Do they refer to this as a "reimagining" (whatever that is)?

As for the comp, the map, and the fact that the girl is smiling, are key to me. Don't give a fuck about Prague. 40/60 odds I'm entering ((yes, they are dropping, life is getting very busy).

Long day, and probably a long week. Lotsa köffee please.
Quote by curvygalore

I like that pic is completely open to interpretation. She could be anyone, the place could be anywhere. *And there might br tentacles.* ?

Grace, I will even scrub out (or a least quickly rinse) Big Bertha to take away the experience of your last coffee. And the apple cake should have defrosted by now.

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate anyone? That's if I cam be bothered to track down the mugs...

Here there be monsters. Good title for a story.

Nice to see the place jumping this weekend.

We went to a used bookstore yesterday. What magical places. Sneaking kisses between the isles is fun too.

I do have an idea forming, so I suppose I've got Lyf's 50/50 chance of entering the contest.

Happy Sunday all. I'll stick with köffee.

The Conjuring is good. I have yet to see The Nun. I need to see Haunting of Hill House as well ;).

How about a shot of Bourbon and a cup of black tea?

The Nun is the only one in that series I didn't like. Conjuring 2 and both Annabelles are good.

!0 a.m. and this morning is already kicking my ass.

Great theme, great prize, I sadly will not be entering. I was hoping for a Flash comp (even had a title and plot invloving a four-way all picked out), cuz I haven't got time for anything more lengthy, let alone 10K frikkin words.

Best of luck to all who enter!

Köffee please.
Quote by sprite
so sad you didn't go with the "Ta-Tas and Tentacles" theme. oh, well. There's always next year.

I'll enter that one!

I actually have another tentacle-ish story in the recesses of my rapidly fading mind.

Cool theme, great prize!

Sacre lube, ten and five percent. Fun and interesting stuff.

Anyone want to play, Hide and Clap? Remember, only three claps.

Yup. Watching, The Conjuring.

Is it 3:07 yet?

Tea, please. Maple syrup and whip cream, with a light sprinkling of Cannabis please. Just don’t tell the border authorities. Sheesh.

I frikkin LOVE The Conjuring. Top ten definitely, maybe top five.

No, I still haven't watched Veronica.

Three more fingers of bourbon. Off to episode 6 of Hill House.

I was doing a lttle research on 'sacre bleu' since Jeff got his Recommended Read there. It is presumed by some that such awards are extremely difficult to achieve. As a matter of record there have been 844 published authors on that site. There have been 86 authors receiving an RR. There have been 46 authors receiving an Editors' Pick.

What that means is that around ten percent of writers there have be awarded an RR. About 5 percent have an EP. That is not really a bad record of awards given out if you think about it.

I'll just take a cuppa java to celebrate small achievements, Bill.

Yeah, that makes sense. The site moves at a slower pace, so you see them less often, but they're given out in the same proportion.

Burrbin, please. Life is a house on fire.

I like it a lot and think it’s very well-designed. I’m good at nitpicking though so here are a few that you may consider.

1) Bottom half looks awesome. I wouldn’t change a thing.

2)I would change the “Business Casual” font to match the “Serious” font. There are four fonts used, which is too busy imo.

3) The coloring of “#1” should match the red used for “Moonlight” and be a bit larger.

4) I agree with you that the red should be a few shades darker so that it pops more.

5) Space “Moonlight” so that the bottom of the “g” isn’t overlapping “Business Casual.”

6) I agree with the designer that “Serious Moonlight” should be larger than “Business Casual” for the reasons you stated above.

7) I would probably put the “#1” on the same line of “Business Casual” rather than next to “Moonlight” though.

8) I think the shadow comes down too far over her face. I would bring it up a bit so that it gradually fades in and you can see part of the bottom of her nose (like an actual shadow would). I really like the inky-looking, asymmetrical feathering at the end of the shadow though. Alternatively, if it's supposed to be hair, rather than a shadow, I would lighten it a bit so that you can tell it's mostly hair. Hopefully, that made sense.

Number 8 is more of a personal preference. Here is one of my covers so you can see what I’m talking about with the shadow and how it fades in.

Good luck!

Her thinking--and I agree--is that the stories are all about contrast: loving vs. brutal, dirty vs. sweet, love vs. lust, objectified vs. connected. That the sex is wild but the tone of the writing is very conntrolled. So the Serious and the Moonlight should be very different fonts, to refect that (it also reflects their personalities).

EDIT: Wait, you were talking about Serious and Business, not Moonlight. That makes sense. Duh.

I agree about the color of the #1.

I like the overlappping "g."

There is no shadow, that's all hair. No eyes, no nose.

That was helpful. Your cover looks great. What fonts did you use? Where was the text?
I am a bit ashamed to admit it, but YES! We were at a bar, and she went to the bathrooom and never came back. In my defense, she was pretty crazy. In her defense, i could be kind of an arrogant dick in my youth.

HYE had a first date where you barely recognised them because they looked so different than when you first met them?
