I am late to this party, my apologies. Happy birthday Smooch, from me and fromm the lovely Layla, who is giving you a great big birthday smooch!

Hello all. I'll take Gill up on that drink--Go Caps!--and have three fingers of Old Goat.

Awesome is now in the title thread! RUMPLATIONS: Awesome Honky Tonk and Cyber Bar! That's, um, awesome Bill! Congrats. On that and the rapidly approaching 1000th page!

Maybe at 2000 pages we'll get an Awesöme!
Garp, from The World Acccording to Garp. Not admire as much as identify with. We have a lot in common, good and bad. What a great book.

Honorable mentions:
Alice, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Godzilla
Bugs Bunny

There are a lot of kinky women on this site smile

But the responses might be from a few things...

For one, the women who go to 'ask the gals' aren't representative of the full variety of women on Lush. It's a much smaller number of participants.

Also, if you're asking about real life experiences and preferences you might hit the Fantsay-to-Reality wall...

Women and men - in general - tend to be different when it comes to kink and fantasies.

Women tend to explore concepts purely within the confines of fantasy without ever having the intent on following through with it. Or, without ever actually experiencing it in real life and honestly being just fine with that and not feeling like they're missing out.

Men - in general - seem to have more reality-based fantasies. If they fantasize it's because they're more likely to really want to DO that.

So therein, you'll find a lot of women who get off on ideas but don't want to experience it in real life - in real life it might not be hot or sexy to try out, it might be offensive or a major turn off.

For another, those who are willing to do things in real life, things like choking are a turn on in part because of the GUY. He's domineering, he's suave, he's SEXY. And well the reality might be that women are dating, married or are sexually involved with guys who aren't quite that. I love a lot of things that I actually WOULD want to experience in real life but my husband doesn't hold that type of mannerism, control, nor do I feel safe with him enough to let him do things like choke me.

And then there's the fact that there are a hell of a lot of stupid freaking questions in Ask the Gals subforum. I've really stopped stepping into that forum because the stupidity of a lot of that content from guys is just eye-roll worthy. What's WRONG with men around here? Asking if we put things into our pussies to get off, or if we get "squishy." (SQUISHY!?) I mean seriously? That shit is obnoxious. A lot of women are sort of sick of having to parse through that crap.

I will NOT talk seriously about sex with guys who think we're . . . god I don't even know what the right term is to sum it up . . . that we're sexually inhibited and underdeveloped and infantile in our thinking about it, or that gross terms like 'squishy' is going to get anyone to want to talk about sex with them. You know that type of stuff makes me question the AGE of members and I do not engage with anyone who sends out the vibe that they aren't old enough to be on this site.

All that being said - don't judge your story content based on the forum responses. That's not really reflective of people here on this site, what their sexual fantasy interests are, and what they'll find appealing.

If you want to get a better sense for how things are received then do some research. Look at stories that contain similar content / tags and see how they're rated and how many people have read them. Read the comments. Stuff like that - investigate.

Yeah, what Dancewithme said, this is really spot on.

Your list is the intellectual's idea of what makes a good story. You have to remember that you're writing for idiots, and that, anyway, clever intellectual people are also human and are turned on by the same base drives as the stupids.

These are: intrigue, conflict, tension, drama. Everything that works in storytelling boils down to those.

Actually, the final three are special cases of the first.

And so is 'show not tell'.

I don't really think that tweaking adverb-count is the answer, or any such fetishistic voodoo. I keep hearing this about adverbs, and I know who started it. It's the kind of advice given in creative writing courses. They can teach you what not to do, but not what to do. What not to do can be listed in a set of rules; what to do requires imagination, which cannot be taught.

"Writing for idiots" seems a little strong, but I take your point. There are several audiences here on Lush, as in real life, and different ones like different stories. One size doesn't fit all. Still crushing on that avatar of yours, though. ;)

As for the OP comment, yeah, most of that stuff is generally true, but--as you note--each has its exections, and knowing when to blow off a rule is as important as knowing when to follow it. Yes, show don't tell, unless what you are showing isn't intregal. Sometimes telling instead of showing is a neat way to collapse some information and feed it quickly to the reader. Don't show me EVERYTHING. Yes, adverbs can be a crutch for lazy writing, but not all adverbs are lazy. Sometimes they are the perfect grace note in a sentence. Yes, passive voice bleeds the forward momentum from a story, but there are times the reader needs a breather from an action or sex scene, and there are times when the protagonist is experiencing something passively, and in those cases passive voice works just swell. Sometimes repeating a word works, sometimes a supporting character doesn't need to be multidiementional, yadayadayada.

The trouble with generalizations is that they aren't really helpful when dealing with a specific sentence, or character, or story.

I like the Ellis sex scene you quoted, quite a bit (I would not call it the sexiest passage of the past 50 years, there are equally sexy passages even here at Lush). But the two books of his I've read--Less Than Zero and American Psycho--were empty and flashy and kinda soulless. Particularly American Psycho. Hated that book. Not just the mysogyny (though that too), but the limited bag of obvious tricks. A paragraph that just lists brand names might work a handful of times, but using it as your go-to trick, as he does constantly, is lazy writing.

To be fair, having some dedication to getting it done and done right needs to be there, too. I spend more time on rewriting, proofing, and editing than I do on the original writing.

THIS is more important than anything else. The first draft is just pouring sand in the sandbox. The second/third/twentieth draft is when you start building the sand-castle.

At the moment, the only images that can be assigned to stories are in the form of a single cover image at the top of the story page. These look great, but we are looking into possibly creating 'visual stories' of some description at some point. These would be intended for people who wished to include multiple illustrations, photographs, etc.

So, for the time being you can only display one per publication, but stay tuned. smile

That's too cool. There is so much you could do with that. Nice idea!
I'll have a cup of that black sludge.

Good to be home, though I have a bit of a sunburn. The problem with vacation is that now I need an extra day off where I can read the paper and go grocery shopping (have no idea when that's gonna get done this week) and relax in general. A vacation from my vacation.

Hope everyone is well.

The Mets suck SO BADLY right now. Glad Gill's Caps are doing well - I will watch them tonight instead of baseball.

you have a will and last testament made up already? if not, you might want to give it some consideration.

In my defense I lick a LOT of things besides thrones when no one is watching. And sometimes when people are. smile

Not that I think we should change the name of the bar, but if we did I'd vote for "The Isle of Misfit Toys."

The trip was awesome, and even had some help driving from the girls, which has never happened before. We found an abandoned house that we all believe is haunted. Really creepy. Youngest--a budding photog--documented it in detail. We are gonna look up the history of the place.

These road-weary bones need a drink. Cheap bourbon in a dirty glass, barkeep.

Congrats on those Caps, Gill!

I’ve been returning to a favorite show lately: Battlestar Galactica. The Edward James Olmos version. (Love the guy. Saw him for a presentation on campus years ago and had the opportunity to exchange a few words. Brilliantly hilarious.)

It’s aged pretty well. And makes me so disappointed that there hasn’t been a space-based SciFi epic on that scale since. It had the acting. It had the story. It had the music. Impressive CGI for a show of its scale.

We need another good SciFi epic again. HBO maybe. I dunno. Outside of Fringe there have been few SciFi shows of any time that have held my interest the last several years since the end of Stargate Atlantis.

God I loved this show (it got a little lost in the last season), and am glad it has aged well. In my mind it is all tied up with my rage against the Bush administration, though that might be partly in my head (though not all, they dealt with Gitmo torture pretty straight on).

Good sci-if is hard to find on TV. Even Westworld is starting to feel weighted down with self-importance and portentousness.

The last excellent TV series sci-fi I saw was The Expanse.

Evening all, something cold with vodka please Mr Rumple. I'll just be over by the throne carving my initials.

Sometimes I lick the throne when no one is watching.

I don't drink coffee.

And MERTZ recorded tantrum so it will live on forever.

I don't know what a MERTZ is. Can you post the video and share with the class?

Still laughing at you.

You're STILL at the coffee shop laughing? You must really be savoring that cup of coffee.

This is my first visit to this den of iniquity, but hopefully not the last. I was lured here by the fact that Tonya visits regularly. So would a coffee be in order? Do I just serve myself? I see that most of my favorite people are patrons. Hi gang. Milik thanks for the plug on my series. Writing the next one calling it 'The Tango Evita'. If anyone has a lewd and lascivious historical character they would like to see featured let me know. Thank you to Milik and Tonya for the favorable mention.
Milik I agree a colaboration between you and Simmie would be most interesting.

Great to see you here, and so cute to see you and Tonya sitting together.

I'll buy you a coffee. That dirt aftertaste is all my fault.

The Grimiore series rocks. As for a lascivious historical character: how about Rasputin? Or Tesla? Or Hedy Lamarr?
I still feel guilty for pouring dirt into Bertha last week. Sorry Bertha. I do think it improved the flavor of the coffee though.

Of to the Sand Dunes National Park. Got married there, deep in the dunes, in a tiny intimate ceremony, and have been back every year since. One of my favorite places in the world.

Köffee please. Good luck, comp enterers!

I take back what I said about My Favorite Murder. It was charming for awhile, but they got tiresome pretty quick.

He missed me altogether. And all my bling too!

Aw, Special K, here's your Lêmøñådē. And some hot choccy (can't believe I used that word) that I think you meant to give to ITM.

And your bling is FÂBÛLÒÜS!!!
Anyone have a favorite podcast?

I am listening to My Favorite Murder right now. Funny and a little gruesome. It's about interesting murders. They crack a lot of jokes.

Also, Marc Maron's WTF podcast rocks. Comedians mostly.

Last one: Slate's Culture Gabfest. A little pretentious, but good, and where I learned about My Favorite Murder.

Orders are up...and probably to no good.
Jeff andMilik crave coffee. Done.
ITM needs a lot of hot chocolate. Gotcha.
And Ms Sara needs Sweet Iced Tea, at least until work's done for the day. Got ya covered like the dew.

So who's gonna be next to come up to the bar whining about life, its consequences and enevitabilities and the slow service around here...then put in an order for a drink?

It took you...literally...five and a half hours to deliver that köffee. I'm ready for bourbon now.
Happy birffday, Beffer!

Here's a cardboard rocket ship as a gift!

Morning all.

Not much to report. After forcing myself to write 1000 words this weekend I abandoned them all and tried a new approach. Good news is I like the result. Bad news is all those wasted words. I seem to be doing more and more of that lately.

We are off to the mountains and Great Sand Dune National Park tomorrow! It should be fun.

Köffee please.

Maybe. I thought choking was like a kindergarten fetish and I was going to post some erotica I’ve written on it but now I’m not so sure.

I've posted several stories with choking involved, though it was never the main point of the story. One of them even won a contest (Serious Moonlight, it's linked on the sig line). It's pretty intense, and I can understand why some would find it daunting. But it makes for good fiction. And occasionally life. smile

Call it "breath play" and you might do better. A mod added that tag (and rightly so) because I didn't tag it and they thought the choking might be unnerving.

What we got is orders for coffee (Jeff and Jim) sweet iced tea (Amelia) and whatever it was ping ordered, he's getting a Jen's Jolter (hot rum toddy with 151 proof rum).

Anyone else yearning for something of a fluid nature? If so, spill da beans. I ain't no mind-reader -- most definitely not the mind's of Rumplators. So whadda ya wanna drink?

Can I have more dirt in mine, please?
Morning all. Köffee please. I brought my own dirt.

Contest ends today? I read maybe half of them, will try to get to Phil's while the contest is still open. Some good entries there, including several awesome entries by the bar regulars. Yes, Ping, Curvy the Unquenchable (CtU) has set a rather high bar.

The Mets really, really, really suck right now. They have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Today's ESPN Baseball Tonight podcast discusses if they are genuinely cursed. It would explain a lot. Sara and Buz, your Braves have some game this year. So do the Nats, Gill.

Busy but not unpleasant workday. Ping, why are you at odds with your family? In-laws, or immediate family? Give us details!

Yeah that's the one I was talking about. I'm pretty sure because I've been endlessly lectured on how it uses no petrol AND no electricity etc. I guess it's tiring if you do it for a while. Or if the grass is bumpy. Or maybe because I've only used a pretty much brand new one, the blades are super sharp and it's easy. Or maybe and most likely, I am just supremely strong and would beat you in an arm wrestle. smile

Today has been so crap it has six hours to save its reputation.

Yeah, bumpy grass, that must be it. :)

I am going to send to a 230 word ghost story RIGHT NOW to save the reputation of your day.

More köffee please, barkeep.
