I guess I don't understand then what "deadline" means. Would it make more sense to have a submission deadline and then a period closed to new submissions during which entries continue to accrue (or not) the required number of votes?

Yes. Yes it would!

I'm always open to better ideas on how to go about things. A simple code change will fix this.
Just over one week to go before deadline day.

Remember to get your entries in a day or so before then, otherwise your entry may not get enough votes to qualify.

Hell man, just pay Adultfriendfinder their monthly fee and get your perv on.

I still get a giggle out of remembering your stories about your AFF experiences.

I don't see the 8 featured members any longer!

We're working on how to incorporate it into the design, if at all.

I was thinking it would be nice to have a permanent vertical spot for them on the RHS. Or just one "Featured Member" which recycles at random every front page load?

I'm curious to know whether the erotic/pornographic nature of the content contributes to that as in that there may perhaps be less providers to choose from, or is it really just the bandwidth, storage and resources?

A bit of both, but primarily, the latter. https://www.quadranet.com/los-angeles-dedicated-servers

We have 4 dedicated servers, a mixture of dual processors and storage. It's a custom setup, with mirrored drives, backups, on top of which you then have to pay the software licences for the OS and database servers. Most companies limit bandwidth and the number of consecutive connections (# users on at any time), however we have (theoretically), an unlimited amount. That costs a lot extra.

When we looked at hosting companies originally, our current host came in around 2/3 the cost of any rivals. They are still very competitive.

It's just what sites like this cost to run. And Gav is running it on an oily rag as it is. In a Corporate environment, you'd probably have a dozen servers for a site with this much traffic. He's done a brilliant job in terms of keeping costs down, yet still providing a high level of stability.

We can't trim costs any further. It's increased traffic and more paying members we need the most! I'd love to do away with the advertising altogether. The commercial reality is we wouldn't be here without it.

It looks nice and slick, the sort of thing that would encourage someone looking for a bit of classy erotica to sign up.

I know the mobile version provides much needed revenue for the site but can't help feel that it's damaging the brand you seem to want to go for on the "normal" version of the site.

I totally agree with you.

Unfortunately, you've hit the nail on the head. Without the mobile site ad revenue, we couldn't cover our server costs (4 dedicated at > US$2,000 per month).

It's a very high traffic dynamic site, using up a lot of bandwidth, resources and server storage space. We serve over 25 million pages each month, to 3+ million people.

The mobile site ads are a necessary evil for now.
Tweetled.

I'm glad this thread was brought back to life. It's quite a challenge.
Happy Birthday Figgy McFigface.

Here's a picture of the fresh ginger you asked me to pick up for you:

If there are APIs available for the data belonging to the different parts of the website, then 3rd parties wouldn't need access to the source code to be able to make a responsive front-end for those parts.

I'm sure Gav knows what it is you're talking about!

It's not a simple undertaking. To make a stripped down version of the desktop site, for mobile, and allow people to interact with it, requires a signup process. Voting and commenting on stories requires the mobile site to be able to access the desktop one's database for example. The same goes if we want members to sign up on the mobile site, to be able to PM or IM other members.

So it is a rather involved process.
We'll take this up with the ad agency we use seeker4.

Our mobile site is due an update, and it's a priority.

You could turn off images in your browser settings, but that would be irritating when you surf other sites and have to turn them back on again.

CCleaner's a pain in the ass anyhow. There are better system cleanup utilities out there.

Which ones?

I periodically use Malwarebytes and Spybot. Like, once a year
I was going to put him up for an Awesome Award, for his avatar alone. The rest, meh!

Congratulations Verbal!

Fast, perfect fix! Thanks!

And as Buz says, it is a very nicely designed banner ad.

I want my head to do that.

How do you do that?
Happy Birthday (again!) Hannah!

I hope your head isn't too sore this morning.

Good point. I've added an option to hide (just above the slider) as well as an associated setting in your settings page.

Excellent. Thanks code monkey!
I agree Verbal.

I've asked this option to be added to the settings.

In plain speak then, the deleted images on my page and those I posted on fire department pages are lost and will not be retrieved? Ugh!

Edit __ Fire department! Bloody auto correct is wrong again

Yes.

Please contact the complaints department.
It turns out Gav was doing a purge of images which only had a certain number of views over a set period, to free up disk space.

Unfortunately, the numbers entered weren't right, and the consequences, rather dire.

If your sig images or any others aren't showing, please upload them again. The issue has now been fixed.

The story wasn't taken down. An automatic process saved it as a draft. All of the original comments, votes, views, etc are all still there, it just isn't currently viewable by the public until Gav can make a change to it. If you speak to your co-author he can tell you why because I explained everything to him.

Neither of you are being prevented from submitting a competition entry so feel free to send one in.

Thank you for your suggestion about an information thread. I personally don't think there is a need but if Nicola or Gav feel differently I'm sure one will be set up.

Thanks Liz.

It's an isolated issue. When there's issues site wide, we always post about them.
I agree Liz. They are always white in books and movies. Totally biased.

And why is it always a horse they photoshop a horn on?

Hollywood, we want less stereotyping

Ear candles. I had really awful tinnitus in one ear, and a Naturopath friend suggested candling.

For those that think it's a myth they work, I can assure you, they do. The amount of gunk that came out of the blocked ear, compared to the other, was double.

Sorry to ick up your thread! If I've upset anyone's sensibilities, please edit my post.

I normally burn tea lights which have no odour. The fragrant ones invariably smell artificial and chemically to me. I put a dozen or so around the small back deck when I have friends around for dinner and drinks. They create such a lovely atmosphere.
For her tireless contributions in the forums, around the site in general, and on the helpdesk, it was an easy decision to give August's Moderator of the Month Award to Liz.

Thank you for all your support Liz, particularly over the last few months. You've been terrific.

I'll be in touch about your $100 Prize.

Nice concept. Should sticky this thread, though. It's starting to move down as new threads get started.

Thanks for the prompt.

Done.
For those who find "The Think Tank" too hot a kitchen to post in, we've added "The Spa" discussion forum, to the mix.

"This 'safe space' forum, is meant for people who prefer a harmonious and non-confrontational place, to discuss current events, and any subjects which might not fit in other forums.

It will be heavily moderated, so if you like vociferously arguing, trolling and winding people up, this is not the place for you. All posts of such a nature, will be removed, and repeat offenders, blocked from posting here."

More details >>

Now there's absolutely no justification for people to complain when discussions don't go their way. Post in "The Spa" instead, if you prefer a less confrontational environment to discuss current affairs.

Thank you for your attention!

Nicola
Well, we're all adults, and if the strict censors at Youtube allow it, I don't see why we shouldn't .

I'd use your judgement on if you think something like that belongs in a place like this, or not.
I've messaged Gav. I have a hunch it's something to do with the image server going out of whack, but he'll be able to shed some light on it once he's poked around under the hood I'm sure.
I consider bacon a comfort food. It takes my mind off these chronic chest pains ...

I picked this up on another site and thought it would be amusing sharing the info.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This table which was done be a PHD nutrition student at a Uni: https://public.tableau.com/profile/publish/foodinsulinindexanalysis/insulinloadvsFII#!/publish-confirm

It shows bacon is one of the healthiest foods, about 10 on the horizontal and vertical axis (carb 1 & sugar 1)

Funny thing is chocolate appears to have 1/2 the carbs / sugars of apples
Chocolate has carbs 24 & sugar 23
Apples have carbs 49 & sugar 57

Less carbs & sugar = less weight gain

Animal fat (in bacon) is not fattening - that is done by the sugars and carbs, in case you were wondering.

So bacon and chocolate are less fattening than apples according to that bloke!

Erm, yeah, sure they are ... How about we use some common sense? http://www.twofoods.com/compare/query/QmFjb24=/QXBwbGU=
