You might get more responses if you'd posted this elsewhere, not the "gaming" forum.
Orphan Black is excellent. Jessica Jones is good too.
Black Mirror is disturbingly entertaining and thought provoking.
Gav will confirm this, but I’d assume the links will all still work, just the stories will be hidden from your profile.
So, unless you knew the link URL's, you'd never find the stories. Effectively hiding the story to everyone other than those who know of the link address.
The reason for doing it that way, is that the page generated for the story, comments, scores etc., will remain intact, and easily referenced in our database.
Gav may have added another layer, as Milik says, making the reference to the hidden story head to a 404 error code, but I'd be surprised if that's the case.
To be confirmed!
He was a real character, with his heart in the right place.
It was quite unbelievable the way in which he died.
R.I.P. Crocodile Hunter.
And good work by his wife and kids, who carry on his legacy and great work.
My original post, was a bit of a kneejerk reaction to the issue which has arisen.
I'm still giving this some thought, but looking at the feedback, we may need to relax these rules somewhat. I take the opinions of our regulars very seriously, and am open-minded and flexible in my approach to how the site is run. It's a community, not a dictatorship (!).
The whole point of mentioning it, is that some people are getting a lot of editorial assistance. And making it obviously known. So much so, that the stories are essentially, partly co-written.
Is that fair to a newcomer to the site, who doesn't have any support network, and is flying totally solo?
We want stories to be primarily, the efforts of individuals.
I don't personally see much harm in asking someone to proofread a story, or them pointing out the grammatical errors. Particularly if you're dyslexic, or weak technically. None of us are perfect, and another set of eyes often helps.
It's the heavy editing and co-writing which has become an issue.
So, would we all be happier, if the rules were altered, so that proofing and light editing are ok, but anything more involved, shouldn't be allowed?
At the end of the day, it's an honour system, and totally unpoliceable. The message we're trying to get across, is that we want submissions, to be as close to your own work, as possible.
Feedback welcome.
This has arisen, because some authors have started adding things like, "Thanks to PookieBear, for editing my story", to their competition entry.
Competitions are meant to be a challenge to yourself. Not you, a friendly Editor, and your collective network of helpful friends.
I think that's fair enough.
Updated 22 Feb 2017.
I will amend the standard competition rules, but in the interim, I wanted to make our policy very clear on competitions.
We want competition entries to be solo efforts, as much as possible. That's common sense. They are competitions, after all.
We're intestested in seeing what you have written, warts 'n' all. It's a good way for us to see how far authors have come on, and makes it fairer to all concerned, particularly newer members, who haven't yet established a support network.
With that in mind, and following a lot of discussion amongst our membership and moderation team, we've decided that:
- Proofreading and light editing of competition entries, by friends, is fine.
- Heavy editing and co-writing of competition stories, is disallowed.
If you have any questions which haven't already been raised in the following posts, please let me know.
Feedback is always welcome.
I'm glad to see this competition has sparked a lot of interest, and that the majority of people understand the basic premise.
I don't think I could have made it any clearer, particularly as ideas were given for likely themes:
"To make things interesting, we decided for this competition, to use a photo, from which you can draw inspiration, and create your own theme. Your story should in some way, use the character in the photo."
"Maybe she's going to a music festival or just exited a relationship or job and she's going cross country and ends up getting picked up by a bad boy, a rich older man, a trio of hot girls, a frisky couple?"
If anyone has any questions concerning this competition, please feel free to message me.
Good luck everyone!
Update from our Technical Department: "We don't keep incremental backups of the database, simply because of the size and costs associated with it. All we have is a daily snapshot, so once this is rolled over there is no way to recover."
So, if you decide to delete your account, that's it.
