I'm just drawing attention to this important campaign.

IWD 2017 campaign theme: #BeBoldForChange

For International Women's Day 2017, we're asking you to #BeBoldForChange.

Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world - a more gender inclusive world.

International Women's Day as a vehicle for change, is it possible?

Last year, organizations and individuals around the world supported the #PledgeForParity campaign and committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions; challenge conscious and unconscious bias; call for gender-balanced leadership; value women and men's contributions equally; and create inclusive flexible cultures. From awareness raising to concrete action, organizations rallied their people to pledge support to help forge gender parity on International Women’s Day (IWD) and beyond.

But the World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won't close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. Around the world, IWD can be an important catalyst and vehicle for driving greater change for women and moving closer to gender parity.

Full details.

You might get more responses if you'd posted this elsewhere, not the "gaming" forum.

Orphan Black is excellent. Jessica Jones is good too.

Black Mirror is disturbingly entertaining and thought provoking.
Congratulations Rumple!

You've been one of the most giving, positive and engaging personalities on the site, for as long as I remember.

A very deserving beneficiary of the award.
Gav will confirm this, but I’d assume the links will all still work, just the stories will be hidden from your profile.

So, unless you knew the link URL's, you'd never find the stories. Effectively hiding the story to everyone other than those who know of the link address.

The reason for doing it that way, is that the page generated for the story, comments, scores etc., will remain intact, and easily referenced in our database.

Gav may have added another layer, as Milik says, making the reference to the hidden story head to a 404 error code, but I'd be surprised if that's the case.

To be confirmed!

Pretty much a lot of nothing in the North East, just some wind and rain, nothing exceptional !

You've summed Buz up beautifully Sprite.

He has always given unconditionally, and gone out of his way, to help people around the site. It was his selfless actions and kind spirit, which drew me to contacting him in the first place, asking him to join the Moderator team.

He also epitomises the spirit which we try and foster here. Encouraging fellow authors, and always stepping up to the plate, when we're short handed. He never needs asking, he just gets it.

I don't say the following lightly. Online and off, including people I've met in the corporate world over *cough*, a decade or so, I don't think I've ever worked (well, it's kind of work!) alongside someone who's more of a team player. He has taught me an awful lot in that regard, and I feel like I am a better person for it.

It's also been wonderful to see his raw writing talent and unique style, grow and flourish over the years. He's been Top 3 placed in quite a few of our recent competitions, which is testimony to his ability and dedication to the craft of writing.

Pic from the early days, being placed in a comp for the first time, giving out high fives:

So, a monstrous thank you Buz, for everything you do around here for our members and the moderation team. And thank you for always being there when I needed someone to confide in, or a strong shoulder to lean on.

You're awesome!
I was watching a TV show yesterday, and one of the guests (comedian / poet), had a job for 2 years, as the person who names storms.

What a great job! He said it was quiet for 11 months of the year, and he didn't have much to do.

So, how on earth did someone come up with the name, "Doris" for a storm?

I'm sorry, a weather bomb with 94 mile winds and 12 inches of snow, does not conjure up imagery of a name like "Doris" for a storm. Bingo, afternoon tea and blue rinses do!

We want dramatic names like, Hurricane Hawke, Blizzard Bacchus, Cyclone Phoenix!

Stay safe folks!

Personally, all I ever wanted to do was be a part of something that included everybody!

Anyone who knows this site well, or has been around a while, will know that nobody will ever be excluded.

If someone is severely dyslexic for example, of course we would allow them to seek the help of others.

That's very different from someone who can write, asking for editorial help, from more established writers.

Please try banging a different drum. That tune is becoming tiresome.
I am utterly surprised by the continued dialogue and fascination about co-written stories.

I agree partly with comments that several good authors, working on a piece, would be very unlikely to displace one of our site's rockstar writers (you know who they are). However, their effort, would likely better one written by a good author working alone.

Competitions are meant to be for individuals to compete against each other. They aren't meant to be collective efforts.

Head to any other story site, and you'll notice that every one of them, either directly stipulates, or heavily infers, that submissions should be individual efforts.

I have no desire to discuss the subject of co-written stories, further. They are not accepted in normal competitions, end of story.

The first post in this thread, has been amended, to sum up where we're at. I'll keep this thread open for comments for a few more days, then close it off.

Now you've all got me thinking it might be fun to have a competition specifically for co-written stories... Competition title ideas; "Ruined Online Relationships", "Forever Unfriended", "Never Again", "One's Company" "Creativity Quashed" "Coming Together" Joking aside, it could be fun if there's enough demand.
He was a real character, with his heart in the right place.

It was quite unbelievable the way in which he died.

R.I.P. Crocodile Hunter.

And good work by his wife and kids, who carry on his legacy and great work.
My original post, was a bit of a kneejerk reaction to the issue which has arisen.

I'm still giving this some thought, but looking at the feedback, we may need to relax these rules somewhat. I take the opinions of our regulars very seriously, and am open-minded and flexible in my approach to how the site is run. It's a community, not a dictatorship (!).

The whole point of mentioning it, is that some people are getting a lot of editorial assistance. And making it obviously known. So much so, that the stories are essentially, partly co-written.

Is that fair to a newcomer to the site, who doesn't have any support network, and is flying totally solo?

We want stories to be primarily, the efforts of individuals.

I don't personally see much harm in asking someone to proofread a story, or them pointing out the grammatical errors. Particularly if you're dyslexic, or weak technically. None of us are perfect, and another set of eyes often helps.

It's the heavy editing and co-writing which has become an issue.

So, would we all be happier, if the rules were altered, so that proofing and light editing are ok, but anything more involved, shouldn't be allowed?

At the end of the day, it's an honour system, and totally unpoliceable. The message we're trying to get across, is that we want submissions, to be as close to your own work, as possible.

Feedback welcome.
This has arisen, because some authors have started adding things like, "Thanks to PookieBear, for editing my story", to their competition entry.

Competitions are meant to be a challenge to yourself. Not you, a friendly Editor, and your collective network of helpful friends.

I think that's fair enough.

This makes me feel better about the couple of warts I found in mine after posting!

I love your sig Emerson!

Great movie.
Updated 22 Feb 2017.

I will amend the standard competition rules, but in the interim, I wanted to make our policy very clear on competitions.

We want competition entries to be solo efforts, as much as possible. That's common sense. They are competitions, after all.

We're intestested in seeing what you have written, warts 'n' all. It's a good way for us to see how far authors have come on, and makes it fairer to all concerned, particularly newer members, who haven't yet established a support network.

With that in mind, and following a lot of discussion amongst our membership and moderation team, we've decided that:

- Proofreading and light editing of competition entries, by friends, is fine.

- Heavy editing and co-writing of competition stories, is disallowed.

If you have any questions which haven't already been raised in the following posts, please let me know.

Feedback is always welcome.

Attenborough is my all-time favorite! I love him so much that ATTENBOROUGH was the name of my fake band in college...which is much more of a compliment than it seems ;)

My mother is reading one of his most recent books at the moment. She says it's a brilliant read (I think it's entitled, "New Life Stories", or it may be his autobiography). I'm going to borrow it once she's finished.

He's perhaps the most accomplished narrator / broadcaster, to have ever graced our screens and airways. Big call I know!

Ooh, I'm Gold but I don't know how to change my forum rank. I'm always the last to know...

Edit - ah, perhaps if I read ALL the thread...

Ping me your rank request and it will be fixed up.

You know I deliberately keep it a little obscure so I have to do less admin

Will fix you up ginger.

Starlings migrate to my neck of the woods this time of year. Watching their flocks undulate across the sky is one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Thanks for sharing

You're welcome!

My parents are up on the coast, and there are literally thousands of geese honking their way back to base each night, flying over their house. It's a spectacle, and they don't half make a wonderful noise. They fly so low, you can hear their (collective) wings flapping.
Happy Birthday Jessica.

I hope you have a lovely day being spoiled rotten!

This should really be an award for Moderator of the Year for 2016, as this particular Mod has been absolutely brilliant for us this last year, and indeed, since she joined the team.

Thank you for everything you've given to the site over the last 5 years. You have been stellar
Congrats _Jhene_!

Your Gold Membership has been awarded, although nobody can tell as you've hidden the wreathe on your avatar, and hidden profile badges! I hope it's worked! lol.

Well done Burquette for running such a great contest, and thank you again for supporting the site in the manner you do.

Be warned though, the plots are super sleazy and super raunchy.

That's the spirit!

Who needs another stolid Valentine's Day story competition snooze fest?
I'm glad to see this competition has sparked a lot of interest, and that the majority of people understand the basic premise.

I don't think I could have made it any clearer, particularly as ideas were given for likely themes:

"To make things interesting, we decided for this competition, to use a photo, from which you can draw inspiration, and create your own theme. Your story should in some way, use the character in the photo."

"Maybe she's going to a music festival or just exited a relationship or job and she's going cross country and ends up getting picked up by a bad boy, a rich older man, a trio of hot girls, a frisky couple?"

If anyone has any questions concerning this competition, please feel free to message me.

Good luck everyone!

I got the impression from Nicola's post that all entries should feature the girl in that specific photograph. Obviously you have to fabricate your own plot around it. Who she is, where she's going, etc.

Precisely.
It is often quoted: "A picture is worth a thousand words."

To make things interesting, we decided for this competition, to use a photo, from which you can draw inspiration, and create your own theme.

Your story should in some way, use the character in the photo:

Competition Theme

Maybe she's going to a music festival or just exited a relationship or job and she's going cross country and ends up getting picked up by a bad boy, a rich older man, a trio of hot girls, a frisky couple?

Maybe it's a roadside encounter or she gets taken to a cool party, a beach, or maybe enjoys hanging out with a gang of horny bikers?

We are deliberately leaving this theme open to interpretation, so use your imagination and see where it takes you (and her!).

In our case, and as a challenge to authors, this picture must be worth a story of 5000 words or less!
