Not the original Age of empires, I play the HD Remake of AOE2 once in a while, but I'm a bigger Red Alert fan, and hell I enjoy Generals too (didn't when it was a big thing, but looking back that was a very good game). I played Age of Empires 2 years ago. The whole historical accuracy and the upgrades were fun, but I've always found the battles rather frustrating (especially the catapults and heavier weapons which always seemed to miss their target).

One of the funnest real-time strategy game I've played was Command & Conquer Generals. You had the USA (based on high-tech strategy), China (based on heavy armament), and the Jihadists (based on ambushes and chemical weapons). Each army was very unique and the game was perfectly balanced, none of the armies was overpowered. I got to play it a few times with friends (LAN party); we each picked a different army and fought against each other, that was way fucking fun and hilarious:





I also loved Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. It was awesome strategy wise, probably the most advanced/sophisticated game of that genre I've played. And the battles were so fucking gruesome/crazy. Another thing I enjoyed is that it was mainly focused on infantry; tanks and heavier units were harder to obtain and not always worth it:
